Gamestop starts selling Steam vouchers

From Kotaku:

A GameStop source has told Kotaku that, given the relative failure of the company's push into online PC sales via its purchase of Impulse, it's now trying something a little more practical. Namely, selling Steam vouchers in its bricks-and-mortar stores.

After all, if you can't beat 'em, skim a little of their money off the top instead.

The vouchers will apparently go on sale on May 15, and are reportedly a "kind of a sensitive issue" between GameStop and Valve owing to the fact it's an awkward way for either party to be making money.

We've contacted Valve to confirm, and will update if we hear back.

Edit: Still unconfirmed, should've added 'Rumor' to title.

After years of free (or next to nothing) software available on Steam ... and this will convince some people to try the service?

Well ... I don't have any words for that.

Nice, I love giving gift cards to friend and I always wanted to give them a Steam card. I mean I know you can gift games via the client but it's much more interesting to have a voucher to give in a greetings card when you attend a party.

EDIT : The text on it says The Ultimate Gaming Platform. Impulse am cry.

Hopefully you can gift online soon, instead of buying a 4 pack and getting people to paypal you, just get them to give you steam credits!

Why are so many people happy about this? o_O

I've been waiting for steam gift cards for a long time, in fact it's been my most wanted feature since I joined the platform. When I have credit I pretty much have to wait for a steamworks game to come out, which admittedly is getting easier since more and more games are using it. But now I don't have to bother.

Wouldn´t it be better for Gamestop to make an actual effort to sell Steamworks titles instead of this?

Retail Steamworks titles? I don't think they want to use their precious shelve space for that. It'd be probably cheaper to sell a 'themed' gift cards (for example, selling a $60 gift card with Modern Warfare 3 print on it) or selling 'Steamworks key' card altogether.

  • mobile app
  • remote downloads
  • gift cards
    [*]better customer service
  • better offline support

I'm running out of things to complain about.

Incidentally, the Valve Employee Handbook mentions a recent hiring push for Support staff.
