Timeline:

-Trump expresses interest in buying Greenland
-Denmark scoffs, refuses
-Greenland’s prime minister declares interest in independence from Denmark
-Trump sends representatives to Greenland

That’s where we’re at, as of an hour ago.

I for one would welcome Greenland and its peoples into the world’s greatest nation. Make it a territory. Give each Greenland citizen a large cash payout. Provide new job opportunities in energy and infrastructure. Free relocation to the continental US if that’s their preference.

A soft power peaceful transition without duress would be a counter example to Russia and China military expansionism.

If Greenland is going for it, and it's not just them establishing their own independent state, they should only except full statehood. US territories don't appear to have the same political representation as states.

Things are moving fast. Hard to tell what's shitposting and what's real lol

What's the deal with Canada? Trump keeps talking about copping them, then Justin resigns... crazy times

Trudeau resigning doesn't have anything to do with that consideration.

Vast majority of Canadians in recent polls are strongly against it.

He resigned as "party leader," they'll still have to deal with Castro Jr's his BS until their election. Just behind the scenes more.

Missed the part where the Danish PM said Greenland is not for sale.

Still interesting but seems really far fetched.

Is Greenland far enough from Alaska that you could get to either going over the Arctic? Or would you always hit Canada? I can't figure out the curvature.

Quite the leading question there but Trump’s response is funny.

So Fallout had it wrong? It won't be Operation Anchorage but Operation Greenland where the US fends off the commies?

They want independence from Denmark, a nation they have close historical ties with and gives them enormous leeway in governance, and the PM just recently said that they are not for sale.

I highly doubt a nation that that not speak English natively, is increasingly wanting independence, and knows how little the USA gives a damn about native rights would want to tie themselves to the USA.

There’s no way I’m gonna be able to keep up with geopolitics over the next half decade. Everything is moving so fast, but there’s also soooo much noise. It’s hard to tell what’s serious or not anymore.

America cares more about rights than anywhere else in the world.

60-80% of Greenlanders speak English. 20% speak Danish.

Different people value different things, what may be an important right to you may not be important to me and vice versa.
Completely agree and that's part of the reason why more people want to go to America (and NA in general) than the rest of the world combined.

The argument against America is there is almost too many individual rights.

Weird.

And I don't think they'd want to downgrade their lifestyles to join the USA as a "territory".

it's silly to claim that joining the US causes a downgrade in lifestyle.

The USA is the world's superpower and Denmark should be glad to hand Greenland to it if we want it. That's the way power works. Denmark is only keeping Greenland out of the USA's good will, because Europe basically exists at the pleasure of the United States. The USA literally has a military occupation of Denmark in place as we speak.

I’m sure the fact that America is the best place to make money has no bearing on that at all.
It absolutely does and part of that is the individual rights they are granted. In country with less individual rights it's way harder to make money in various ways. They are very much connected.

If you're more powerful you should be allowed to just take any territory you want? Okay...

The general public see it as ramblings of a delusional madman but I'm starting to realise how much the world needs someone like Trump currently. Like him or not, the era of global stability is over. We are in the midst of a new arms race, the most dangerous one there has ever been. The old ways that worked in the past no longer apply and need thrown out.

When the opportunity comes to make your best chess move, you simply must make it. It's a cold hard truth that I hope the rest of the country finally wakes up too. Its time to get real.

How do you think we ended up with this continent? Asked the Indians nicely for it?

Denmark is a very nice place filled with lovely people, but it's barely an independent country at this point. It can't defend itself. It is occupied by American soldiers at this very moment. The idea that they can puff out their chest and say "no" is cute, but if we *really* want this piece of land, they can't say no and can't do anything about it. The negotiation and asking is basically just being polite.

I predict that if Trump really wants Greenland he is going to get Greenland.
