For profit prisons scare me to the bones. I can't really see how that is legal in civilized countries in modern times. It must open up incredible risks for corruption and slavery-like structures.

Eh, it's kind of about how they are managed/regulated. If prisons here "graded" by the recidivism rate of their former inmates then maybe they would try to develop more techniques for "reforming" the prisoner. A 'capitalist' prison system with proper oversight and regulations could be cheaper and more effective. Of course that would require politicians to not be in the pocket of folks who profit form more prisoners, but thats true for lots of issues across the board.

Personally I think we should have a lot fewer "crimes with prison time" and a lot more short duration pain experiences like caning for "lesser" offenses. There is a level of crime that makes you unfit for society, those folks need to be permanently removed. But there is a punishment that makes you rethink if you want to commit the crime in the first place (all these department store shop lifting sprees, for example) that could probably be solves by 20 lashes or whatever (and Yes, I'm aware of the historical impact of that specific punishment) because you have to balance stopping crime with not then having to spend more on "treating" it. And FWIW, public executions have a role. Getting some of those bernie Madoff guys on a chopping block would go a long way in restoring public confidence in governments ability to police the wealthy
