How do you think we ended up with this continent? Asked the Indians nicely for it?

Denmark is a very nice place filled with lovely people, but it's barely an independent country at this point. It can't defend itself. It is occupied by American soldiers at this very moment. The idea that they can puff out their chest and say "no" is cute, but if we *really* want this piece of land, they can't say no and can't do anything about it. The negotiation and asking is basically just being polite.

What's next? US taking over all of Europe (or fighting Russia for it)? Sounds great.

-Of COURSE you have the right to other countries, Donny. Look at us, my people are telling me Ukraine is surrendering any day now.
-Sounds great Vlad. I am sore. Are you close to cumming?

I predict that if Trump really wants Greenland he is going to get Greenland.
The geopolitical ramifications of that will be immense. If the USA invades and annexes the territories of a country they are allied with it will send an immediate red flag to supposed “allies” around the world. Countries like South Korea and Japan would look at US bases as liabilities instead of the security blanket they are supposed to be. Who knows where it can end up? US bases being closed across Asia and Europe? Germany, Japan, South Korea and other nations developing nuclear weapons as it is apparently the only thing that works now that the USA has gone insane?

End result may be a world where dozens of countries across the world have nuclear weapons and ICBMs and the list of USA bases and Allies are thin. This is the extreme scenario of course, but invading Greenland is extreme as well.

Trump won't have to invade Greenland, they will hand it over.

And, you know what, countries like South Korea and Japan should look at the bases as liabilities, because they are. One man's "security blanket" is another man's "military occupation."

Basically it would lead to WW3.

It will be interesting to see what's going to happen because there is a bit strained relationship between Denmark and Greenland anyway. And Greenland has been leaning towards independent for years. But it cannot exist by itself (due to various reasons). Plus now there are elections coming there and the government might want to negotiate better deal with Denmark for example.

I can see it being a federal territory akin other islands or PR.

They won’t, not without military force or severe economic pressure being applied. The end result will be the same however.

Funny, it worked for almost 80 years and benefitted the USA massively. Pissing off allies when the Cold War with China is on seems like a dumb idea, but alright.

What's the deal with Canada? Trump keeps talking about copping them, then Justin resigns... crazy times
Well JT had it coming for years. Lasted long enough to decimate his own party. I think Canada won't last as an independent state for long - due to international processes and internal turmoil (due to first nations and stuff), I think some provinces might decide to go independent. Plus there has been tensions with the western provinces for years.

Missed the part where the Danish PM said Greenland is not for sale.
Danish PM does not have much say in that.

Is Greenland far enough from Alaska that you could get to either going over the Arctic? Or would you always hit Canada? I can't figure out the curvature.

I don't know if it is going to happen - it makes sense for USA, much less for Denmark.

Well, I'm saying that they will, so we will see what happens.

Yes, it is like in Civilization, when you conquer a country and win a war it is normally good for your civilization. You get profitable cities, the resources, etc. It does not change the fact that the conquered countries are conquered and subservient to their conquerors.

Timeline:

-Trump expresses interest in buying Greenland
-Denmark scoffs, refuses
-Greenland’s prime minister declares interest in independence from Denmark
-Trump sends representatives to Greenland

That’s where we’re at, as of an hour ago.

I for one would welcome Greenland and its peoples into the world’s greatest nation. Make it a territory. Give each Greenland citizen a large cash payout. Provide new job opportunities in energy and infrastructure. Free relocation to the continental US if that’s their preference.

I figured Canada wasn't long enough, not really sure about the feasibility of the Northwest Passage going up to the top of Greenland and then heading west rather than the current idea of using Canadian waters.

As a canadian I'm a bit jealous.
I wouldn't mind if the US took us over silently into the night 😊

But I want to keep my free healthcare.
Come on, we're neighbors 😃

Can we not have history repeat itself again for the second time?

Also make it a territory I don't want them mucking up the electoral college or being some bastion of liberalism. Let them have representation without any ability to vote on stuff. But in return they get to join our overly generous social services.

Well that's why Trump is interested in both (though Canada for various other reasons). But Greenland essentially allows to control both enter and exit directly + due to location Greenland allows to project middle-range missiles to Europe and Russia, rather than using ICBM.

I don't know how it is going to end, but all of it has its own reasons - in comparison to folks who are behaving as if it was a random choice for oil or something.

I want the US to take over Canada, too.
The main issue with Canada is ever growing deficit, partially attributed to payments to the first nations. But getting Canada would be a huge middle finger to UK.

Trump plz buy Brazil
He opted for Argentina instead.

Seems like a lot of people here actually are fine with that. Pretty weird to hear from people who are supposed to be your allies (I'm not from Greenland or Denmark, but Europe).
Europe has been mocking USA for years, while not paying enough for NATO while buying cheap resources from Russia so...
