i dont get the doom and gloom about video games

I am not worried about the future of gaming. I am just worried about my future enjoyment of gaming. I have four nephews between the ages of 8 and 14 and they only play Fortnight and Roblox. Only one of them has a single Sony first party game and that was Spiderman. One even referred to single player game as the boring games that are like reading a book. That's the new generation that will be dictating what gets made.

Agree, gaming has been in a pretty good place the past few years. I can't keep up with all the quality releases and there's some stuff coming that will consume my life like Monster Hunter. Sure. there are some turds, but that's always been the case. I think the people whining just have very narrow tastes.

Sweet Jesus. Everyone enjoy what you can now and for the next 5 to 10 years. That's wild to me, going all in on two titles. Isn't that the age to be experimenting with all kinds of stuff. Back then FIFA was very popular and yet my circle would still have time to throw all sorts of carts and CDs in the consoles/PC almost for the fuck of it. We didn't know what to expect half the time just going by the back of the box from blockbuster and word of mouth. It was all mysterious and shit.

Heck I have narrow taste but I can still find bunch of games to enjoy but if someone cant find nothing to enjoy they seriously should look for different hobby.

hasn't there been data showing kids are moving away from consoles? totally makes sense

the mid range laptops all kids need for school nowadays can play most the games the kids want to play, and are the same shit the streamers they follow play (stuff like Minecraft, Roblox, Rocket League, Fortnite, etc.)

funny enough your reply to my perfect example is another perfect example of the problem

How is it a problem that I'll be spending $10 -ironically less than a month's sub for GamePass- on an upgrade so I can play a slightly better version of a game I know I really enjoy playing?

DG was one of my favourites of the PS4 gen! Or is that a problem for you too ? :)

I don't belive in doom and gloom about video game, it's just developer running out of consumer goodwill and try to spread their propaganda since they think we will just buy whatever they spew out, but recent with a rise of china and korea game to balance it out, i think gaming will be good again

why do you feel the need to defend your gaming choices? stop being so insecure and just have fun.

I'm not sure if you're trying to convince me or yourself at this point

but if you are legitimately curious, go through the actual thread here and you will see the myriad of issues people have with this announcement and the state of play more generally:

the consensus is that Sony is literally trolling people

Doom and gloom is only if you get online reading on gaming websites or videos. Avoid it and look how everything feel clearer. You'll better enjoy what you've got.

You're the one who said I was "part of the problem".

So I was just asking why? What exactly is (the) YOUR problem ?

I know you think you're being "clever" and trying to flip the script, but honestly pal, here's the truth: I'm not going to change my opinion without a persuasive, rational argument to do so. I really could not care less how popular some bad takes happen to be, when in my opinion those views are silly or ignorant I'm always going to call them out.

And of course the other thing you fail to grasp is that I'm not the angry person here! You're the one problematizing stuff, I was stoked with Days Gone getting a PS5 upgrade with an extra horde mode for $10. And my money is just as good as yours as far as Sony is concerned.

Entertainment is entertainment to me. I mean technically speaking is me being excited by the MGS 3 remake actually any different? Well apart from the fact its going to cost me significantly more - Its appeal is primarily that its a story and an experience that I enjoyed in the past that I'm happy to revisit, like Silent Hill 2 was recently.

Point being, if I get x hours of enjoyment out of a thing. Then its worth it to me. Not sorry if that's a problem for you :D

Objectively there is less creativity in games and most new games are generic and boring especially AAA games that includes all regions.
But yeah there is some very good recent games too, i think the count is still the same, its just the percentage is lower.

Kingdom come deliverance 2 ( i wont play it because of multiple reasons but i will admit that the game is well designed and it has a mature well written story )
Ninja gaiden 2 black
Doom the dark ages
Clair Obscur

I felt a bit bummed when I realized that only GTA 6 and Little Nightmares 3 interest me. I'm going to be playing mostly older games this year. Stuff like Ocarina of Time, Order 1886, Outer Wilds, Rimworld etc. Stuff I haven't either played or finished before. I'll only be following Switch 2 games with interest. The last State of Play was like staring into a desert.

Because 14 or so titles you listed are sequels and at least 1 remaster/remake.

A few titles look interesting but for the most part there is very little originality and little chances being taken.

Publishers don't want to risk losing money and gamers are too stupid to give new games a chance.

so many people say that the industry is at its worst right now , some blame it on Unreal Engine 5 and how everyone uses it and makes all the games feel the same , some blame it on AI and how it makes the game feel soulless , some blame it on woke and how it ruins the writing of stories/characters

I agree with everything written above , those problems do exist and will continue to exist but there is so much to choose from right now that its impossible to not find something that satisfies you , for example 2025 looks like an amazing gaming year

Kingdom come deliverance 2 ( i wont play it because of multiple reasons but i will admit that the game is well designed and it has a mature well written story )
Ninja gaiden 2 black
Doom the dark ages
Clair Obscur
Ninja Gaiden 4
The midnight walk
MindsEye
Metal Gear Solid snake eater
Lies of P overture
Gta 6
The first berserker
Shinobi art of vengeance
Metal Eden
Ghost of yotei ( im not a fan of the game but i know alot of people are )
Mafia the old country
Atomfall
The stone of madness
Deaths Stranding 2
Blue Prince
Dying Light the beast
Slender Threads
Fable ( maybe )
Little Nightmares 3
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon
Crimson Desert
Cronos: The New Dawn

and many more , now dont tell me that out of all those games you cant find at least 4-5 games that you enjoy , i have been gaming since 1996 and i dont remember having so many options as now , like i said there are problems in the industry , some will be fixed some will continue like AI , i just hope that it wont be used in areas like writting and i hope that hand drawn environments wont go completly away
Great games don't happen arbitrarily, I bet great writers, studios and community managers react to what the internet says and change their work according to that cause, to be honest, there are literally games been made where failure is not an option and they exist in the making as we speak.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Because travel back to nearly any other generation and the quality and fun increases by magnitudes.
We have substituted truly great games with just okay ones.

Bingo. There are a lot of good games now - waaaay more than there used to be. But there are exceedingly few great ones anymore. You still get one from time to time, of course, but going back and exploring the lineup for a system from before Gen 7 is kind of an astounding contrast. It's not just because we've forgotten about all the shit games from earlier eras, it's that there really were more games that were incredibly successful at what they set out to do, and that had a distinct aesthetic and feel to them. That's why I these days, I still find it so fun to go back and discover stuff I never got around to playing from those earlier eras.

People are too wound up with rage to appreciate games anymore. Everyone and their brother was shitting all over a game like Indiana Jones before release, saying sweet baby this, modern audience that. Turns out it was a big nothing. As it typically is, honestly. There are a few instances where things get a bit nutty. But the discourse around gaming has become doom and gloom. A lot of the games are just fine. Or better than fine. It’s too bad so many have a raging desire to elongate their e-penises instead of actually playing games. It’s a culture problem of trying to “gotcha” people on online forums. I’m sure plenty of people on their deathbeds will turn to their family members and let them know how they were right about [insert game here] in 2025. It’s kinda pathetic, but I’m sure the MC scores hug them at night for warmth.

Record profits doesn't mean people are super happy with their first party output

Increased game prices, PS% not having price cuts, increased PSN price plus over all spending even on 3rd party games have all contributed to these record profits

Both can be true

I am way more invested into the PS ecosystem vs Xbox if you don't include PC so no its not ONLY people invested in the Xbox ecosystem complaining about PS first party output

I think you misunderstood me. I’m saying if you are heavily invested in Xbox you are dooming for good reason because the future is so uncertain for the platform.

PS5 is very good hardware. I never really cared for Sony first party, but what do you feel like you’re missing? A new Uncharted? They just dropped GOTY last year. I feel like there is always something I wanna be playing but don’t have time for on PC. Fair points about pricing but everything is getting more expensive. I’m paying $40 for haircuts bro.

You see some make 20 posts repeating whatever makes them feel a certain way for every post that has some thought put into it.

Repeating, repeating, signal boosting, echoing, droning, bleh. Most people are smart but most posts are stupid. The online "consensus" is useless.

Gaming is great overall, and I don't think there has ever been a better time to be a gamer than from 2017 through present. Not only is the selection of games on modern platforms wider than ever, there are games of all shapes and sizes - quality games for pretty much everyone. The industry itself is in a pretty unhealthy state at the AAA level, but it's otherwise very sustainable.

We are certainly in a lull for Sony's first party games, due to a combination of factors (increased dev time, COVID disruption, and the live service distraction). Microsoft has had no points of differentiation to justify their consoles. And we are at the end of the Switch life cycle (yet about to begin anew with Switch 2). It's an awkward phase of the generation, and I expect that to improve.

Not counting new AAA entries from existing franchises and old classics being playable on newer hardware, there are still a ton of great games. Some notable mentions from the last several years:

- 13 Sentinels
- Animal Well
- Astro Bot
- Baldur's Gate 3
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Death Stranding
- Disco Elysium
- Elden Ring
- Hades
- Helldivers 2
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Hogwarts Legacy
- It Takes Two
- Octopath Traveler
- Returnal
- Sea of Stars
- Stray
- UFO 50

Games are hyper analyzed these days by sites like DF for technical details and social media for anything else. There are some out there (on all sides) using the information (right or wrong) to push agendas. If someone cannot find enough good games to play these days with all of the ones that are out there, I would suggest they take on another hobby or start playing retro games.

Western games may be in a bit of a slump, but Eastern devs are still dishing out plenty of good stuff.

Nintendo for instance have arguably had their best gen ever thanks to unifying their development resources onto a single platform.
