Wait a few hours for m@!#$%$#*&ing shaders to build! Such fun!! It has to happen with any new game updates, gpu updates, and even some windows updates.

There has to be a better way to tackle this. Its literally making me lean towards buying more games on consoles.

A few hours? Maybe you should move to console because your PC is chugging.

Hours for shaders? Are you sure? Are you running a Pentium from 98?
any of these games barring forza ( that ones super long) can be literally average 10 to 15 mins per game for anyone with a decent hardware and much longer for those who don't.. so yes its a huge pain in the ass.

but lets all pretend its only secs... :messenger_dizzy: "master race" should be changed to "Master Liars"

Negative mate, what specs you got? something may be wrong with your PC. Shaders take a couple of minutes on most titles. I have all those listed.

Stay off the crack.

What is this hyperbole bullshit?

You must be exaggerating or your PC is busted

But go ahead, sell your PC components and buy a console. They are known to be very effective too.

Yeah the only one I would give him is Last of Us, at least when I played it. But I just played the game while they were caching and didn't notice any real stutter anyway.

Had to recompile shaders in Halo recently after a driver update, it was like 5 or so minutes which is annoying, but I just tabbed out and watched some BS on YouTube for a bit. IDK if I've ever experience a full 10 or 15 minute shader comp.

dont need to. I have all the consoles already and a two pcs just for gaming. my main pc is a ryzen 7700x with 7900xt. I have a smaller build with a ryzen 7600x and a 4700 ti in another room. but both I of those must be broken. :messenger_dizzy:

Must be since you're experiencing something literally nobody else in the world is. I guess you're just special.

Somethings up mate for sure if things take that long.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Wait - are you building all those shaders for all those games on the same PC, at the same time?

My worst offender is Hogwarts Legacy, which can take my PC about 2 minutes to build when the game starts up.

How long does The Last of Us building shaders take?

It should take around an hour for The Last of Us building shaders process to complete. We’d strongly recommend waiting for the message to disappear before playing, and you’ll want to restart before hitting ‘new game’. If you dive right in without doing so, you’ll experience quirky textures and unstable performance.

:messenger_dizzy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: Master Race of Liars ..

The last time building shaders took a modicum of time for me was back in 2020 with horizon zero dawn, I was still on a i5 4670k back then.
As soon as I upgraded to the i9 109k I'm still using, building shaders is super fast. Sounds like something is broken on your end OP.
Why doesn't this thing happen on consoles?
Preset hardware, the shaders are pre-compiled.

Not every game is the same . Just saying " it's super fast " means nothing .. 😵‍💫

OP put the bong down.

All my shaders take seconds to a few minutes. Something is wrong with your PC. Probably not being Nvidia.

well, the "hours" you are experiencing certainly isn't super fast, so not that.

I hope this is some kind of satire, because shader compilation is done by the CPU, whatever gpu you have means nothing.

Strange.
I don't think this has even taken a minute for me, and usually it's only the first time when starting a newly installed game.

If it takes hours(!) than something is wrong, unless your PC is very ancient, and in that case you won't get any advantage from playing these games on PC anyways, so then you probably should play them on your consoles.

Hmm… I haven’t played Forza 7 much since it eas kind of crap, but didn’t have this issue with Horizons 4 and 5.

Last of Us mostly got fixed after patching so it would take just a few min max. Don’t have the other games, but it’s either your machine OP or the games.

CPU wise I have a 7800x3d and a normal WD Black PCIE4 drive for OS and game storage (2TB and 4TB). So nothing particularly out there.

The speed in purely determined by your cpu, if its not running close to 100% something is wrong. TLOU shouldnt take more than 15 minutes even on low end cpus and thats probably the longest by far.

Given that the alternative is stuttering for the entirety of your playthrough which takes hours and it only has to be done once until you reinstall drivers or do a windows update you should be glad, unless you want to play a mess of a game that is.

Hes on about Forza Motorsport, while that game is a mess the shader compilation doesn't take very long at all.

I just booted Forza up, it took literally longer to sign into xboxlive than it did to compile the shaders. Like 20 seconds max.

I think its something to do with consoles being a fixed platform so the shaders are precompiled.*

* this is pulled straight of my ass and a complete guess, but i could be right.
That's 100% correct. Console hardware is known during development, so the shaders are pre-compiled and shipped with the game. PC hardware has so many variables that it's better for everyone to have the end user compile them.

Probably has 30 windows with 10 tabs each of pornhub open in the back on Chrome.

Pretty sure OP is trying to build shaders for all four games at the same time. His CPU is fine and should do TLOU in around 20 minutes. Forza in around 10 minutes and Dragons Dogma in around 4 minutes. But only on the first runs.

I hate shader compilation because in most games, the step takes 2 minutes every time you boot up the game. Hogwarts, Star Wars, Dead Space, Callisto. It sucks ass. there are some exceptions like Avatar, Alan Wake 2, Starfield and TLOU1 which takes 15-20 minutes after a patch or on new install, but after that first install, it loads up immediately. But there are a lot of other unreal engine games that run it every fucking time and i just sit there looking at the screen like a fucking moron stuck in the mid 2000s staring at gta loading screens.

Other than that, there is no way it should be taking hours unless you loaded all games at once. My CPU is maxed out and consumes around 180 watts during these shader compiles and it completely sucks up my cpu processing power. i dont even think i can browse chrome while it compiles shaders so if you are running all 4 games at once, you need to stop all of them and run one at a time.

So collectively you agree they are around 30 - 40 mins. Like I said averaging around 15 - 20 a game. One right after another. That's way too long.

There has to be a better way.

I just did Dragons Dogma 2 which i've not played since launch.

1min 48 seconds. On an I9-13950hx mobile chip.

Forza under a minute, same set up.

I don't have the last of us installed to check.

Like i said you're doing something wrong or your system is borked.

I noticed that when I booted up Atomic Heart recently. The shader compilation stage only uses two CPU threads and it took ages to finish. Other games will use all available threads so you can be looking at massive differences in compilation times.

My 9900k is due for an update soon and shader compilation is one of the reasons that I want 16 cores next time around. Not all games will benefit from them but halving the time in some games is good enough reason for me.
