(IGN) Avowed: We Finally Played Obsidian’s Latest RPG and It’s Fantastic

Suspicious Kenan Thompson GIF

Even without the ability to fuck aliens?

Looks great. This did a lot to reassure me. Its not what he's saying, its the footage itself. It looks busy, far busier than I realized. Looks like a lot of magic, attack and gear options. Traversal and level design seems solid. Hearing that the story is also starting strong, and I have more than enough to be looking forward to this on day 1. The combat looks legitimately fun for the 1st time here. Blood effects are selling the hits better.

I really thought the enemies just standing around looking derpy while you hack away at them with basic attacks looked fantastic too

Thia is the same b-roll footage from the other day except they got one of the internets biggest xbox shills in Destin to say the game is awesome. Id wait for more honest impressions before getting too excited.

I don't trust IGN reviews for anything they review. That said, I do hope this turns out well and only because I have GamePass and will play it essentially for free.

I'm not super excited for it because it seems like something I'll want to let cook a minute with patches and stuff. But I'm 100% getting it.

So, I watched and firmly imagined a heavy handed reshade. Cool everything off, dump the saturation in the magic like 90% lower. We're getting somewhere... but shit even the font on the damage numbers is appalling. With any luck the engine will be easily moddable. But then I remember the dialog scenes. I'm an Obsidian enthusiast but this looks like it's going in the direction of Outer Worlds.

(One of) your companion is the voice of Garrus.

Time to calibrate some weapons.

1st time I watched it. I dont get to watch videos at work. The footage looks great.

Its been years since I actually played Dark Messiah but I'm going to watch some combat footage now to compare. I'm pretty confident in the Avowed combat after watching this.

Yeah im not as down on it as some, i quite like the sound of a 20-30 hour rpg. Its on gamepass so nothing lost if its a miss.

Yeah some of the takes in this thread read like the bitch-eating-crackers meme.

The video seems pretty solid.

The only main gripe I have is when games do the 'freeze on attack' thing, I don't like that.

I dont think it had great animations or anything. I think the amount of abilities and moves looks fun to play around with. Nearly every scene was showing off new weapons, charge attacks, spells, companion abilities, blocks, potions, counters, and on and on. This footage doesnt even show shields or bows. And the gear menus seem suitably detailed. Looks like PoE basically in the menus.

The damage numbers and fonts need work for sure as well.

I have a sinking feeling that this game will be ruined by DEI nonsense though, that would be a deal breaker in a game like this for me.

Watching it on the TV now. I think it looks awesome.

Only thing I want to see now is a town. Maybe some minor visual polish on the UI.

Usually in games like this, you can disable the damage numbers. That's what I do, so hoping that option is here too.

A few of the impressions I've read and listened to on Youtube praise the combat, but I can't see it from the same footage they keep showing. A lot of what I've read from a combat and build perspective is exciting like the blood mage build, sounds really fun to play. I've never really been concerned about the combat to begin with though, I'm concerned about the quest/narrative structure and the world/level design.

That looked very mid to me. Didn't feel the combat , character design, animation, etc…

Outer Worlds comparison is apt and I was not a fan of that game.

Really wish we could have Obsidian of New Vegas and KOTOR 2 or even PoE2 vs whatever this is back.

I dunno, combat looks and feels like a Dark Messiah on a budget. Thing is, Dark Messiah was actually Arx Fatalis 2 on a budget, it's 19 years old and it still looks and feels way more punchy and connected than everything showed in Avowed so far.

Looks great. Can't wait to see how it runs on PS5 Pro in fall 2025.

If it doesn't come to PS5, that's a win for XBox. Looks like a vastly improved Outer Worlds.

If you haven't, try the OW DLC. It's pretty good.

I see numbers going up, I sleep

Flashy rainbow colors everywhere, numbers when damaging an enemy, hideous UI, enemy healthbar ...

Could barely see the action with all of this on the way

Easy pass. Sadly, 'cause Obsidian makes some great stuff.

Is the DLC actually any good? How much content is in it?

I, personally, enjoyed it. The second DLC, Murder on Eridanos, is better.

It's like a self-enclosed murder mystery "whodunit" story.

They're decently sized, 5~8 hours with their own questlines, each.

Looks better than the first showing, but we still dont know how expansive the rpg side of the game is. I have the impression it's very light, like Outer Worlds.

Combat reminds me too much of Skyrim, which isn't a good thing.

But hey, if the world is pretty and nice to explore and the quests are fine, then it might be worth it. I just hope it's better than Outer Worlds, that one almost puts me to sleep.
