Avowed has the best first person combat in any RPG ever

I didn't know anyone considers Cyberpunk combat good before this thread. I actually enjoy the game quite a bit but the combat was really not great.
Legit a first for me if people are saying it's good or great. I thought it was completely passable and that was about it. Games with good combat make me look forward to combat, 2077 didn't do that for me at all.

I'm still curious about how Avowed plays, maybe I'll check it out soon as there's nothing new that's out now that interests me. But hey, OP can feel that way about it and it's fine, it's all subjective, no one is right or wrong in how they legitimately feel about anything.

I'll check it out when it comes to PS5. I won't pay full price for it, but I'll consider picking it up once it gets to around the $30 level.

I appreciate good combat in an RPG, but I need more than that. If all I want is good combat, there are a ton of games that specialize in that. If I'm going to play an RPG, I want an immersive world, relatable characters, a good story, rewarding exploration, decent art design, intelligent dialog, divergent customization/upgrade paths (so you have real role playing), meaningful choices, and a decent inventory management system. I don't need all of those, but I do need more than just fun combat. I can get my combat fix in a hundred other places.

I'm still pretty early on but its been really enjoyable. Feels very alien compared to most WRPGs. Very minimal Tolkien copy and pasting. Reminds me a bit of an action RPG Morrowind with how strange it can all feel. Pirates, untamed wilderness, supernatural elements. Tons of lore. I have to hit the vocabulary button every other line to read the highlighted history, similar to the keyword entries in Pentiment and FFXVI. Definitely a ton of written history to find in the world too like the Elder Scrolls. Its not a perfect game but totally enjoyable for any fan of WRPGs looking for something to play. I felt the very beginning was a tad slow but its picking up.

I gotta try out the aftermath Cyberpunk because seriously I pre ordered the game a day prior and was shocked how barebones it was, can't complain about Todd Howard when your competition manages to do it worse, let alone the fact that CDPR made perhaps the biggest marketing campaign ever in the game industry, I remember all the jokes and lawsuits back when the game was released and now there's the whole narrative about "being better than Bethesda" when back then it was a completely different story, most people saw it as an action game in line with Borderlands than a Deus Ex of sorts, some even felt it was a linear story that developers had to slap mostly useless choices for the sake of "WRPG conventions", that 2018 demo mission was even regarded in a guide as the only quest to fully use that mechanic.

Jesus looking at gameplay of avowed it looks dreadfully boring and seems like the lead dev heard about hitstop praise once, and thought it was the end all be all of video games. It's terribly over compensated, and overdone, every single sword swing, hitstop+sound effect+vfx to let you know your sword really just 'hit' the enemy. like bro, how about just a sound effect for hitting the enemy? And why cant my swings, uh swing? Sure some hits should stop, maybe it hit a bone, or the armor too directly, but why do none of the swings graze, or slash? Leaving a scratch across the armor, or a clean gash across the chest of a beast. Why doesn't the swing maybe slice clean through a brittle bones low lvl skeleton? Instead of coming to a complete stop every. single. swing. with. an. over. the. top. sound.effect. and. over. the. top. slowdown. and. over. the. top. vfx. to. make. sure. the. player. knows. that. we. have. hit. stop.

The two handed great swords feel a bit more like a slash. Contrary to most movies and games its actually really difficult to slash through things 1 handed and you're not really slashing across something unless you're doing some kind of angled draw cut. Mostly its going to be a chop hitting like a bat with the angled edge aligned (hopefully). It is different. I think it feels good when you're playing though. Even the guns and bows feel a bit weighty. Daggers are much faster. Magic is probably the best part. Anyway, its clearly not for everyone.

I have to disagree. I found the combat so fun that I would stop and take out every group of gangster's I saw when on the way to objectives.

The movement is so good, you can stealth, sprint, slide, double jump, dash, airdash, practically fly when you get a few upgrades. Stealth and aerial takedowns, throw knives, barrel over enemies, throw enemies at other enemies, groundpound, leap to distant foes, reflect bullets, dismember people, go invisible, slow down time... and that's before even touching guns and grenades, which are also awesome.

Or you could be a sniper, or a stealth assassin, or a netrunner that wipes out whole rooms of enemies without even needing a weapon. There's so many fun options to chose from.

Mike, CP2077, on consoles at least, played like cack (i.e, terrible acceleration/sqare-like aiming zone/terrible deadzones) initially, after patch number....can't remember which one, they finally fixed that and nowadays feels really good, not COD/Halo good obviously but, still good...

Mind you, you still have to do some adjustments via the options menu but, it's light years ahead of how it was initially.
Bought it on the XSX in 2021, stopped playing 'cause I couldn't aim for shit no matter how much I fiddled with the settings, re-bought it for the PS5 almost 2 years ago after that patch dropped which actually made it (very ) playable.

It's really good and plays fine nowadays, shame that we had to wait 3 years of constant patching but...

To be fair, I played it and completed it at launch on PC. So, I missed out a lot of the "vast improvements", but the game was very playable at the time for me. I never thought the combat was bad, I didn't think it was great, I just thought it was fine.

GHG “those bringing Xbox in the conversation!”

Finds a post #97 for his counter argument with a person saying it will have better reception when releasing on PS5

I call all the script followers "Phil" from time to time and it's pretty tongue in cheek (keep this up and I'll be calling you Phil as well soon, I'm sure you'd like that). But you wouldn't understand that because it's all so serious for you as evidenced by post 53. Your first post directed towards me in this thread had nothing to do with the games being discussed up until that point.

But let's not reference that post because as usual you want to attempt to make youself seem righteous as Giallo Corsa Giallo Corsa eloquently pointed out.

Not sure how much longer you'll keep this nonsense up for, but your spiral has certainly been interesting to witness.

Most gamers don't see Avowed in the same light that the OP seems to, you'll get over it one day.

I mean combat in first person fantasy RPGs is wonky in general(melee, sword fighting etc) so it was destined to happen that someday somebody finally nailed a mechanic. I haven't played the game yet btw, it's just there's hardly good games in the genre that nail it.

The combat is pretty basic and shite but has the same razmataz of the player character doing too much as Forspoken to make it look interesting. Underneath it's pretty shallow and basic combat.
Absolute nonsense, you have huge amount of different weapons, abilities, magic etc a big drawn out fight can be very strategic. It's pretty obvious you've played very little of the game or are rubbish at it, it's one or the other.

I beat this game a week or so ago after 72 hours. I've had a lot of time to think about the experience, and I'm still a bit blown away by how good certain aspects of this game are.

In particular, the combat is exceptionally good. I feel this is thread worthy due to all the negativity surrounding this game at release. As a result of that, I think a lot of people are totally unaware how significant of an improvement Obsidian made here when it comes to combat.

Avowed has easily the best first person combat I've ever experienced in an RPG. I have a strong feeling in a few years we are going to have a ton of threads about how underrated this game is.

The combat excels for a variety of reasons. Combat is tactical and requires you to strategize, encouraging you to use the environment to give you an advantage.

It is extremely fluid and dynamic, animations look great and hits feel significant, regardless of whether you're using melee, guns or magic. When it comes to magic, this is the most fun I've had casting spells.

Build diversity is great. You can mix and match any weapons and have a blast.

For those of you who decided to avoid this game due to the reception around release, I think it is at the very least worth checking out for the combat.

I am very excited to see where Obsidian goes from here.

EDIT: I should probably include some footage. Courtesy of @Buggy Loop:

That bear getting fucking rekt looks hilarious.

I forgot to inform some of the posters here.

There is this small service known as gamepass. They can always try the game there instead of making a mockery of themselves.
