Japan's shrine head priests release an official statement condemning Ubisoft's lack of cultural respect and racism in Assassin's Creed Shadows

I think Ubisoft sucks; I think their whole premise with Shadows was mainly driven as some half-baked virtue signal,

That being said - I don’t think any modern culture should lambast another for using its culture as a basis for something/inspiration. Cultural appropriation is such a flimsy hunk of junk argument.

If some American historian was doing this about that American Showa game we’d all be fucking laughing our butt flaps off at how stupid it/he was.

I don't think it's cringe or stupid at all. It's a great sign Japanese authorities on the subject speak their mind freely, commenting on this subject. This is so much better than sugarcoating it or keeping silent about it. It's an actual dialogue, which is not necessarily expected if you keep the typical Japanese restraint in these matters in mind. The Japanese have every right to tear Ubisoft a new one over this disgraceful "product" and demand of them to do a better job.

Japanese companies make anime where nuns are raped.

Sure. Would you say Japanese anime, a modern work of fiction for the purpose of entertainment, is the same as the subject of national identity, history and culture? Both of them have the exact same value, meaning and relevance to the Japanese people? Or that the contents of the works of some random Japanese artists are somehow a valid basis on which we can decide how much dignity and respect a national culture deserves?

Kudos to those shrieking snowflakes for practically greenlighting a tsunami of YouTube videos after release, with players cheerfully smashing up their precious virtual temple in the most disrespectful ways imaginable.

Also I’m pretty sure Japan has with western setting that’s not exactly super “accurate”.
People draw a line between "not accurate" and "not accurate to a degree where it is received as a frontal assault, an insult to one's national identity and integrity." Has nothing to do with victim mentality or anything. Every nation on this earth, even the United States, has a sense of national pride and identity. Sure you can insult whole nations, but is this a well advised way of treating each other?

Yes, I can understand that they are upset since this is the first time an AC game isn't 100% historically accurate and depicts every culture with respect... 😔

Have you played SMT? I LOVE that series but it also a game that doesn’t show Christianity in best light.

My take is devs should have absolute freedom to make what they want and gamer are also free like the game or not.

Any publicity is good publicity right?

It's going to do better than most people in our little bubble and Japan than people think it will. Have Japenese gamers actually supported Assassins Creed in the past?

Truth be told, I think people are just disappointed that they finally visist Japan. Then cut off their knees with bullshit deceisions. The setting is what most people wanted to see.

I get that they feel disrespected, but a LOT of Japanese tv shows depict Christianity in a very disrespectful light, often using it for nonsensical story plots with priests and nuns, and an extreme bastardization of that religion from outside their borders, so I don't really feel like they have the high ground here to complain when someone from elsewhere doesn't respect their beliefs.

I mean, it's a bit cherry-picky for my taste considering how Japan is portrayed in many games/anime etc. (and how Japan portrays other cultures) but I agree with what one of the fellas above said, I think it's hilarious that it's ubisoft that's getting sandbagged so I'm totally fine with it.

This must be one of those Japanese things that I'm too gaijin to understand.

I don't see this as a big enough deal to kick up a fuss about. If I apply the same rules about any other country then I see little reason to care because there will always be someone offended by something, and it's whether or not the complaint has merit. "Most Japanese cannot bear" shooting an arrow into a shrine seems like it would be a bit of an exaggeration to say the least.

If we're talking religion there's even less reason to take complaints on board, and just like Mohammed shouldn't have been censored on South Park, AC:S should be able to do whatever it wants unless it's a hateful attack on a nation or people. Which obviously it isn't.

When Egypt sued Netflix, it was because their show was depicted as fact and there were lies told about their history. This isn't that.

Ultimately I'm a believer in ubi's free speech and to make whatever good or bad game they like. But on the other hand, if you're making games that are so wildly off-base on basic things like samurai never harming civilians then perhaps the foundation of your game could have done with some more/better research and planning.

It's funny how the narrative keeps shifting to fit whatever argument people want to push. First, it was "only western chuds are mad, the Japanese don't care," then "okay, some Japanese chud incel gamers care, but not the majority," and now that actual japanese officials are speaking up, it's suddenly about some historical grudge about the japanese disrespecting our nuns before and now it's ok to destroy their shrines in the game and also fuck their feelings! the mental gymnastics are wild lmao

The news and takes in this thread aren’t new btw…

Also, you should double check people’s post history to make sure it’s the same groups of people are saying all of those things.

Sometimes I really don't get this forum.

When the game was announced, most people here were mocking Ubi for their wokeness and their inability to portray Japanese culture, architecture, or anything right... but now that Japanese officials are getting involved, suddenly none of that matters anymore? Is this some basic anti-Japanese feeling I'm not American enough to understand? I don't remember seeing these reactions when Egypt banned a TV show for having a black Cleopatra...
Read above.
