Japan is a great county, but when it comes to censorship they are backwards as F. The things they show (tentacle penises fucking little girls) and the things they don't (some cuts on a body) don't make any sense.

Something is clearly wrong when 70 years ago Kurosawa made movies where decapitation was as normal as anything.

that's every country...
in the US violence is ok, but profanity and nudity isn't.
in most other countries it's the other way around.
all of them vary in how much one is ok over the other.

in Germany, thankfully, it seems like slowly but surely censoring stuff becomes rarer and rarer. but some extreme violence still gets censored in order to get a USK rating.
(not getting a USK rating is the equivalent of an AO rating in the US basically, with much of the same restrictions attached)

also it usually isn't as cut and dry as "decapitation = ban", and more about the context in which they happen. in AC Shadows you can run around with Sasuke and behead random civilians without any repercussions basically.
meanwhile in Ninja Gaiden 2 on 360 (which is not banned but rated Cero Z) you decapitate enemy ninjas that attack you.
In Ninja Gaiden 2 there is also way more blood and gore than in AC Shadows, but it's fine in NG2 because of the context on why it happens

As some people seem to not understand, allow me to clarify.
CERO does not allow sex scenes either. I believe the sex scenes in The Last of Us were also censored from the Japanese release. CERO is strict, not necessarily Japan as a whole.
Furthermore, CERO is not a government body and doesn't have any legal power, so it is not like "Japan" is banning this stuff.

Yeah a bunch of games are censored in Japan. I have to always change my Xbox location to EU or US when I am downloading a game that is censored. Also weirdly some games are not even available. For example Dead Space remake and Terraria are not available in the Xbox Store Japan.

Censorship laws are retarded and make no sense. At least in Canada. It’s like gov just layers on rules without thinking.

Standard tv channels no nudity or swearing. But some blood and violence is ok.

But then local channels like citytv back in the day could show whatever unedited movies they want. And anything deemed educational like PBS or some medical show I remember as a kid showing two adults fucking and some internal cam up a womens pussy showing cum blasting inside her like she’s got a night vision cam up her twat from a big one eyed Willy. Wtf!

And then extra channels you get if you buy a premium cable pack has all the t&a and gore you want in an hbo show.

Oh, by the way this is Ontario. Cross the border to Quebec or watch French channel CBC and you got t&a no problem on prime time even thiugh English CBC didn’t do that like that old hockey soap opera 30 years ago. English version is dubbed and sanitized. Watch the French version on channel 12 and the lead actor is sucking a woman’s tit.

Dead Space makes sense. Dismemberment is a core gameplay mechanic. It would be weird to have a version without it.

While censorship does happen with some games in Japan (and some games aren't released at all like Mortal Kombat) if a game has a Cero Z rating it generally means the blood/gore is kept intact. Here is the Japanese trailer for the newly released NG2 Black remake:

You will notice from the very first kill in the trailer there is FULL gore/dismemberment and that's on a human enemy, not a monster. Another recent example is Rise of the Ronin. I bought the Cero Z version at launch, zero censorship, full gore/dismemberment and this example is particularly relevant because it too takes place in the real world and specifically in historical Japan just like AC Shadows.

All of this is to say there is definitely some Ubisoft fuckery going on behind the scenes due to the AC backlash in Japan, the audience here just isn't having it and Ubi is in full damage control mode. #TheMoreYouKnow
