Crazy how anti-woke Gaffers are siding with shrine priests who are virtue-signaling about a video game. Didn't see that coming.

I don't understand why people can't be against the idea of yasuke In this game which is dei pandering at its finest. AND calling out the BS Japanese crying over the this disrespect nonsense.

If it was a japanese character smashing these wooden boxes in the shrines, you 100% wouldn't hear these priests crying.

Real Japan isn't like anime they can be very conservative. I think Japan has become more used to irreverently violent games like GTA. Those games were originally also controversial in the west. I think this comes at a bad time for Japan, when there are a lot of dipshit entitled American tourists in Japan visiting places like shrines and treating them like a cross between Disneyland and their local strip club.

They can. This thread specifically is about "lack of cultural respect and racism in AC Shadows" from religious Japanese groups and I was just referring to that.
I think you miss my point. The same people against the dei crap are agreeing with these religious groups simply because they hate the game for its dei stuff. Yet these religious groups are in essence the same people the anti dei people should be against.

You can all out the dei And not believe in lunacy that the game is racist and disrespectful.

Definitely, samurai never hurt unarmed people. It's just a fact.

Except when they tested out their swords on peasants to see how sharp they were!

I'd love to know the nuanced opinions this man has about a certain 5 year time period in the 1940s...

I wonder what will the priests and diet members say when they find out that yasuke rails Oda Nobunaga's sister, these old fat ubisoft hags can't stop themselves from putting their fetishes in the game lmao

No I can’t keep up with this, summary please. What did Ubisoft do to trigger Japanese high priests? Isn’t the video game about historic Japanese lore.

Yes, but there's a difference between freedom of speech and freedom of expression (art) on one hand, and mean spirited, intentional disrespect towards a foreign culture on the other. I am as much against censorship and pro freedom of speech as most other users on GAF, but I don't think that these issues apply here. The developer of this game consciously mocked Japanese culture with bad intend, and that's not OK. If the dev was making some kind of point, be it politically or for artistic reasons, that'd be OK in my book. But that's not the case.

You are not, in fact, pro free speech and against censorship.

If you were, you would be fine with the developer saying any mean spirited and intentionally disrespectful things they wanted to. Not that that even seems to be the case here.

Pro freedom of speech doesn't mean: you should be able to say whatever you want, depending on your intent, unless someone doesn't like it. That's just pro-censorship.

You should've read all of my posts here, as I made this clear later on. Never did I demand for intentional assholery to be illegal. There's a lot of intentional assholery going on in misinterpreting my statements, though (not talking about you, obviously). Ideology eats brains.

I'm not talking about legality.

Giving an individual the ability to, if they so choose, disrespect a digital representation of a shrine, in a video game does not even come close to what even a moderate supporter of free speech should consider "not ok"

That is straight up authoritarian.

You are talking utter nonsense. Being pro free speech doesn't mean that you should like or even enjoy literally anything another person might say to you or to others. Completely ridiculous. The concept of free speech as a political idea refers to the legal framework enabling people to speak their minds freely. That's it.

No, but It means you should tolerate it, and you should not be ok with speech you dislike being restricted. Let alone in favor of it.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

Remember that old chestnut?

What are we even talking about? There's literally not a hint of dissent between our positions then.

Yes, that is ok, Even if you adhere to the fantasy that it was intentional mockery and not simply incompetence, it's still ok.

If you support free speech you should be condemning Japan's calls for censorship, not siding with them. Especially if you think it was intentional on Ubi's part.

Nowhere did I see a Japanese spokesperson call for censorship?

Wheather it's OK or not is me expressing what I think, which is me exercising my right to free speech. You are free to disagree with that verdict. You are not free to censor my opinion or make it illegal for me to say that I think it's not OK. So hard to comprehend?

During a parliamentary meeting the Prime Minister of Japan himself called the depictions of the shrines "unacceptable" and said that Japan "Would not remain silent on this issue". Then Ubi said they're removing those elements. Sounds a lot like censorship to me.

I never implied anything you said couldn't or shouldn't be said. I just think that it's dishonest to hold those opinions while claiming to support free speech. Supporting it goes beyond simple legal compliance. That's the bare minimum.

Some miss the irony in the anti-woke championing free speech, and then siding with the shrine priests here calling free speech depictions disrespectful. Ubi and the shrine priests can be overly sensitive and woke in different ways, as some have mentioned.
