Marvel’s Spider-Man Generated Almost 4 Billion US Dollars in Revenue During its First Year

According to the LinkedIn profile of Kevin K. (via), former Global Group Marketing Manager at PlayStation, Marvel’s Spider-Man achieved a 971% sales surge in its first year, selling over 20 million units globally and generating 3.8 billion US Dollars in revenue.

Marvel's spider-man revenue

Kevin drove market leadership, mentored a large team, and forged strategic partnerships to ensure sustained growth and innovation at Sony Interactive Entertainment. Notably, he led the marketing efforts for Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Earlier this year, Insomniac Games had announced that the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, comprising of Marvel’s Spider-Man and its remastered version, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, had sold over 50 million copies as of February 14, 2024. Specifically, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had sold over 10 million copies at the time. With the game’s arrival on PC next month, its sales are expected to receive an additional boost.

I think you’re reading this wrong.

For one, how could it have generated $.3.8 billion with just 20 million units?

Also, I read this as the game achieving sales surge of 971% in its first year, not 20 million and $3.8 billion in revenues as well. I think the latter two statements are overall numbers.

The game sold 13.2 million units in 11 months. That’s apparently according to Sony. Those numbers don’t add up one bit.

The first one is amazing, but its kinda hard to believe in those numbers. When my brother picked this game it wasn't even at full price, and it wasn't even on a bundle.
The rest is crap. I'm surprised it sold those numbers, maybe because the word of mouth from the first one.

Tha trend on that doesn’t sound good. It suggests;

Spider man 1 - sold in its first year 20 mil, and presumably many more since, especially if you include the remaster.

Spider man 2 at 10mil, doesn’t give a timeline, but I would expect it at least 1 year since release.

So quite substantially less sales for the second, and it cost twice as much to develop as the first. The third is projected to cost yet another 100mil

Spider-Man didn't sell 20M in its first year. It sold 14M at most.

He will be as a mentor, not much else based on how the second game ended.

Miles game didnt sell anywhere near as the first game.

- it’s very clear Norman Osborn will be a major player in the third game, ain’t no way Peter won’t suit up in the third game

- ah man, “only” 14.4 million sales with a $270 million profit. Sony is doomed, I guess?

You could easily say the same about the first game based on how it ended and yet his role in the second game was almost nothingburger. Even if he will become the Goblin it doesnt mean Peter will make a comeback. I mean in Spider-Man 2, Miles had no relation to Black Cat and the mission with her did not involve Peter at all....besides becoming a lesbian???? all of a sudden. Eh, dunno, I loved SM2 but I have little hope for the third.

You have a habbit of twisting replies to suit your needs. I never said "only". Those numbers compared to total og numbers, not just day one are weak.

-so pure speculation on your part, despite your first post claiming “they want to get rid of Peter Parker” which would suggest you knew definitively

-14 million sales is not “weak” for a smaller budget game compared to the first. What are you, Square Enix?

Spider-man 2018 released at a time when the numbers of PS4s sold was roughly twice as much as the number of PS5s sold when Spider-man 2 released. Much larger install base: more game sales usually.

???? Ofc its pure speculation lmao. Where did I say otherwise? Everything we say about the third game is speculation dummy. One can speculate things based on how the game ended.

-you initially phrased in a way that did not suggest speculation

-your original claim that “Sony hates money” would suggest the Miles game made a small profit or even had a negative profit. It obviously did not do that

No. You just like to argue for the sake of arguing. You do this in every Marvel related thread. No idea why I removed you from the ignore list.

Correct. It was also sub £20 in the UK four months after launch. Same with Horizon and God of War. Most of Sony’s first party games seem to have a ceiling of around 5-10 million at full price which is still fantastic.

It's a asbsolutelly stretch... but if, somehow, we can quantify how many PS4/PS5 units were sold because of this game and/or the number of new/renewed PS Plus users...

It is in fact true. Google it if you're lazy to look up basic sale stats before replying.

Maybe you are doing the lazy, "Lets compare the sales of Spiderman 1 to Spiderman: MM overall". Instead you should be tracking the game's sales based on how long they've been out.

The Insomniac leak had the Miles Morales game at 14.4 million sold and Spiderman1 at 22.7 million sold. So to it didn't sell "anywhere near" Spiderman1 is wrong. Especially when you add in the context that Miles Morales had been charting higher than Spiderman1 in 2023 and 2024.

Morales sold 70% less at launch than the og spider-man at launch. Longevity is irrelevant. Even after a few years Morales still hasnt reached the og sales.

It didnt sell anywhere near Spider-man 1 is in fact true. Half of it isnt near in human language.

Math doesn't add up, as that would give an insane average revenue of $190 per copy sold. Or does that $3.8 billion number also include all the revenue from Spider-Man PS4 bundles? I know there was that $200 PS4 Slim Spider-Man bundle that sold tons back then. Even so, it's a stretch...

TL;DR

It's a corporation. They're adding every number possible. It probably includes the monetary worth of the consoles sold with the game as well (ie bundles, etc).

Poorly written LinkedIn blurb as he uses first person “I” a lot. Normally you don’t do it that way.

His sentences about units and sales isn’t correct either. He probably meant holistically all the stuff he did led to $3.88B.

But his wording makes it sound like 20M copies was worth that.

You expect better writing skills from a marketing exec.

It would be like me saying I fully furnished my living room with new stuff including a lamp worth $5,000.

When I’m reality the lamp was only $40 of it.

I don't think there is any chance we don't get Peter Parker in the third game. Might not be much but he will be in it and playable. It would have bothered me to know that after the first game but honestly Peter just isn't nearly as fun to play as Miles. I hope they expand and start brining in other Spider-men from other universes to play with that have interesting play styles. The games are fun but you need to keep them fresh in some way. They've basically had to turn Peter into Iron Spiderman just to have him keep up with Miles.

IIRC, most people after playing the this game agree the third game will have at least three playable characters: Peter, Miles, and Silk/Cindy Moon as 2 ends with setting her up.

They could figure out how to keep Peter unique in gameplay for 3. I never read it (because it ultimately led to the loathed One More Day), but I know the J. Michael Straczynski run in the comics dealt with supernatural elements affecting Peter. I heard one issue basically doubled his strength, so that’s why I’ve always felt Peter and Miles are equal, Miles has invisibility and electric powers, but Peter has more strength and experience.

He's including the bundle sales along with any consoles that are sold after the spiderman release.

typical marketing cuck. didnt make anything himself and taking credit for other people's hard work.

Saying longevity is irrelevant is silly. You're making no sense. Plus do you know how to do math? 14 million isn't half of 22 million. And AGAIN..........Spiderman1 came out 2 years earlier.

It's not even half as long and was pretty much to Spider-Man what LL was to Uncharted 4.

A full game starring Miles only will be an interesting test to see how much Peter Parker contributes to the sales of the games.
I hope we don’t get that. They need to go all in with Osborn against Peter next game. Maybe they can have green goblin kill off miles so Peter can stop trying to pawn off his responsibilities to someone else. I don’t dislike Miles, but he is more of a Robin type character in these games.

It's much more likely they kill off Peter than Miles. I don't think either is getting killed anyway.
