Marvel Rivals hits 10M players in 72 hours

Sheesh. Really makes you wonder how Square managed to make an Avengers game that flopped.

They made her the main character.

I think the difference is: This is free to play and Concord wasn't. Concord probably would have stand a better chance (maybe, the beta didn't attract players either) than the Marvel Rivals.

Also, Marvel is, you know, established.... Whatever the fuck Concord was supposed to be, was not. It was like Sony's version of Guardians of the Galaxy, but bad. The writing was horrendous, and the characters were terrible.

But, charging $40 for the game, I feel was the true tipping point. No one was going to pay for that.

No, they came out at the height of the MCU and people rejected the game because it wasn't based on the MCU.

That failure also hurt GOTG because people immediately (and to this day) thought it was just a clone of Avengers and not a great single-player game.

Thankfully 1943 shouldn't have that problem. Unless of course Black Panther 3 ends up being Denzel playing T'Chanda in WW2 with Chris Evans as Cap.

No one wanted to play Concord when it was offered for free. The "$40 barrier" is just another excuse as to why the game bombed so hard.

If people want to actually play a game, money is not a barrier, see Path of Exile 2 for the latest example.

It's genuinely embarrassing that a Chinese dev gets our taste better than our own countrymen do.
For sure, they are going to swoop in and dominate AAA. They've been cutting their teeth for years on high quality AAA games on mobile (that went largely ignored in the west) and now they are using those built up skills and going all in on PC and console. They are going to ravage AAA western devs. Just wait, it's only just started.

I disagree, I think had it be free 2 play, it wouldn't have died the death that it did. I think it would have attracted a lot more people had it had a proper marketing (which is another big factor into its failure). I think not acknowledging it as $40 is just being blind to it being a problem especially when it was in sea full of these games.

Thinking about it now, it feels like a bigger marketing budget probably would have helped it better, but it was too far gone at that point. The writing was on the wall for the game when it released into beta when it didn't get the players. Adding to the fact that it was pay to play just made it worse.

Free to play
Doesn't require a powerful PC
Has characters and art that appeals to children (Marvel + Overwatch/Fortnite art)
Plenty of characters to claim one as your favorite.
Youtube/Tiktok hype

Yeah, not surprised it hit those numbers. Even my daughter, who doesn't like Marvel, likes the game. To me it looks boring, never got into the Hero shooter (TF2 was the only one and I spent most of my time in that game playing modded servers), but this one played all the right notes for those who enjoy it.

No one played the free beta.... not sure how you can draw any conclusion that it would have done better free considering even the beta tanked.

And again, if people want to play a game, they will buy into it. The price barrier is an illusion.

I want to try this out because it's free and I used to love Overwatch, but holy fucking balls this is the most blatant OW ripoff I've ever seen lmao. I mean it's not subtle at all. The UI, the maps, the look, the way the health bar above the head goes down as bullets hit and the crosshair animation, the healing icons appearing when being healed, literally everything is just overwatch.

NetEase beating Blizzard at their own game. There are even some aspects of Diablo Immortal that are better than D4 (matchmaking, events, etc).

Marvels Avengers being a sales bomb isn't some sort of great mystery. The game died because they tried to do both an AAA single player game and one that had shit GaaS mechanics tacked on. Combine that with a terrible endgame loop and it is no wonder it failed spectacularly.

For those mentioning the $40 on Concord, of course it matters, BUT....

The Concord beta was open and free to ALL players and barely scratched 1,000 concurrent players.

Marvel Rivals beta was closed and pretty hard to get in...it surpassed 150,000 concurrent players.

Marvel Rivals is just a blast to play and has some of the most authentic and best designs I've ever seen to beloved existing characters. They look identical to how I remember them from the 80's/90's.

I love the lack of progression and grind. Every character is unlocked from the start.

Character's asses be tight, the game will take flight.

Character's bootys be slooty, the game is a beauty.

Toon's butts be cut, the game won't hit a rut.

Dem tits be lit, this game will insert the tip.

All jut and no gut makes us all bus a nut.

It's so well polished for a F2P title, the main menu alone is a joy to use. I just noticed that they have brought back environmental destruction: you can't just sit on a rooftop and snipe forever as it can collapse under you. And there's a custom game option too!

Or how Sony managed to make a Guardians of the Galaxy that flopped.
Honestly, it’s still one of the best games of this generation. Great visuals, story, characters, voice acting, attention to detail and soundtrack.

It just flopped because of the way it was marketed with many people thinking it was similar to the Avengers game.

Huge shame.

Concord’s asking price isn’t that high anyway

The current player counts for HD2 & Palworld would have secured a spot on Steam's top10 most played games 10 years ago and was considered very healthy numbers for stable MP populations.
Now you need 100k+, really shows how the platform grows.

So theres what only like what 10 healthy games on steam?

If Raven was in this abobination of game people would need to pray hard for her to either not get gender swaped or not be trans, with a "bonus" skin of pride flag.
That game needed to die just like Concord. Absolute offense to DC property use.

I really do think a few people have their heads in the sand here and their excuses fall flat when considering that an OW clone can hit crazy high numbers immediately in a "crowded market", but there were only a negligible amount of people who could even be bothered to download the open beta of Sony's latest big budget flagship title.

Nobody cared to even try it despite there being a ton of variety game streamers always looking for new content and tens of millions of Steam users as potential players, and I think it's for obvious reasons. It's just not hard to see what was so blatantly unappealing about Concord that it even turned people off from playing for free.

There are already so many good free games to play, that being free is no longer enough. Peoples time is valuable and gaas is taking up many people's schedules.

Trying to entice with FREE is actually no longer enough, especially if your player characters are ugly.

I agree with everything you said. So the question is why are some FREE titles blowing up, even if they have no originality and offer nothing new, while another big budget game from a major publishsher can only reach a few thousand people?

Why was concord so catastrophically unappealing that there was practically no one in the whole world even willing to give it a chance, including variety streamers, despite the game's obviously high production values and Sony's pedigree? To put it in perspective, I'm from a relatively small town in a flyover state and my high school had more students than Concord's peak player count during its open beta.

It is. But it has Marvel characters. I think people really like to forget how popular Marvel characters are. MCU is a completely separate beast to the universal popularity of characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine. I also think people underestimate how big Marvel properties are in the F2P and mobile spaces.

It is, but it feels like when Overwatch 1 just came out and everyone was still new and enjoying the game. Also, the game is just pure fun...I can't hate on it for being an OW clone.

On top of that, it is extremely polished for a F2P game. The game has no loading whatsoever and no queue times at all. I've experienced zero lag. I am literally finding matches in less than 1 second and every single character feels awesome to play as.

I think all game development should move to Asia. Western devs are becoming more and more unbearable. Watch overwatch introduce a 3rd person mode now…

He meant concord, sony didn't make the GOTG game.

I've already played quite a bit of MR, and I think the appeal is easy to understand. They made a slightly worse copy of what was, at one time, a very popular game in a very popular genre, and they did with a brand that just a few years ago was the most popular pop culture thing on the planet.

Whether it maintains its popularity, I don't know. I can tell you I'm enjoying it quite a lot, but at the same time, if the characters were designed to be deliberately ugly, like Concord's were, the gameplay mechanics wouldn't be enough to keep me around. The appeal of the brand and the specific art style and designs they used are definitely part of the appeal for me.

The reason why this game is sucessful is because of the roster. That's why Avengers and the Wb game failed. No one cares about the avengers outside of the movies and no one cares about some D level DC heroes. It's not the GAAS format.
