That would be correct if they had the same budget. One is a HD remaster the other was advertised as the next big entry in the FF13 saga but as we see was anything but big.

DoC was a shooter and still sold better.

At this point, you really need to wonder if LR had a bigger budget than FFXHD, which was developed for two separate systems (one console, one portable) and went through a very long development period. The uneven quality present in LR should answer that for you. Plus, from every interview prior to release, LR was never advertised as 'big' or even as a Final Fantasy XIII-3, 'most polished FF game' comments aside. It was a game for Lightning fans that happened to conclude the FF13 saga.

Also, DoC came out on a platform at a more lucrative time and with a much higher user base.

Wouldn't a sequel have a higher budget than a remaster...? Unless there is something I'm not aware of that makes it an exception this time.

Lol at the hope for Vita. It's a sunken ship. Not even James Cameron could pull that wreck from the abyss. As for Wii U, nothing outside of a Square Enix/Capcom collaboration of MonHunxDragon's Quest is going to save it, so buckle up kids.

Go two better Monster Hunter x Dragon Quest x Pokemon x Puzzles and Dragons.

Time to bust out that cheque book Iwata.

Did i say Metroid? No, but lets pretend i did. I think more people would buy the console for Metroid (prime) than they would for Donkey Kong Country, especially since we got one just a few years back and a remake of that on the 3DS. I know more people bought DKC than MP3, but those were different situations. Wii was a runaway hit with the casual gamer (the core gamer owned a PS360), the gamer that plays a couple of games per generation and doesn't know all that much about games... but they DO know the name Donkey Kong. WiiU is the total opposite, as casual or non-gamers hardly know it exists, and the more seasoned gamer is holding off due to a lack of compelling software (unwarranted IMO if you look at what's available currently, but whatever). DKC may have been a fine game, but i don't believe it's the kind of game people would buy a console for. Something like Metroid Prime, is.

He's talking about moving hardware though. I'd wager that a higher percentage of hardcore DKC fans already own a Wii U than hardcore Metroid Prime fans. Of course we don't know that for a fact, but it's a separate argument than determining which game we'd expect to have more total sales.

EDIT: Just saw kingsnake's post. While the situations aren't necessarily equivalent in every way, that's evidence against expecting Metroid to drive more hardware sales than DKC.

Personally I had been hoping for a new ip from Retro. That'd be a complete unknown in terms of hardware shifting ability, but would have been very interesting to see something new rather than yet another 2.5D sidescroller (even if it's a fantastic one).

I see the prag16 edit: that's the truth, even if someone of us really would like Metroid over DK (debatable, but I can understand that).
I mean: we are talking about Japan. Even if the % of HW units moved could be way higher (and looking at Prime3 VS DKCR we can't really say this) compared to the actual sw sales of the game itself, we are comparing a game that sold around 75K average to a game that sold 550K average.
So, it's not only the launch week sales that we should count to determine how many units a game moves, if a certain game is able to constantly sell for month in hingh position (keeping stable the hw baseline on a weekly basis) versus a game that sell 80% in the first week and than desappear

Wii sales on Prime 3 launch:
From 64K to 57K

Wii sales on Other M launch:
From 15.9K to 16K

Wii sales on DKCR launch:
From 56K to 79K

You really think an outsourced HD port costs more to make than an original game? Maybe if it was on iOS, but LR wasn't on that.

Is this a joke? Of course a HD remaster would have a smaller budget. Much smaller. Use your head dude. Your love for Lightning is deluding you.

As much as you may hate to admit it, the fact a HD remaster is going to outsell a FF13 saga game tells you everything you need o know about the FF13 saga from a sales standpoint. FF13-2 really told us it but LR just confirms it.

Great showing for the Vita. Even better showing for the FFX remaster games which seems to have almost sold through its stock for this week.

Agreed with the others on the LR vs X comparisons, LR is definitely underperforming for a brand spanking new entry of the series as compared to a remaster lol. Toth, you're on your own in this thread lol.

There's no way you can actually believe FFX|X-2HD had a bigger budget than LR.

base.

Isn't it obvious? Of course it had a bigger budget. And LR was also developed for two system, probably way more different to develop than PS3 and Vita.

WiiU gonna drop back down to 20k until there is an intervention.

Sadly. There is nothing coming out for it that will keep it high. I have a feeling that when the PS4 finally launches in Japan it might even drop below 20K as there is nothing announced for it other then Donkey Kong. No future content at the moment you'd buy the system in advance for.

Monster Hunter had a run.

Hero Bank (3DS) is getting a TV anime:

The official Sega Store on Enterbrain's online shopping site Ebten lists the Hero Bank game with "a Spring 2014 anime adaptation green-lit." The listing adds that the franchise will expand beyond the Nintendo 3DS "money battle role-playing game" with a television anime after the game's March 20 release.

The game centers around Kaito, an elementary school boy who is suddenly burdened with 10 billion yen (about US$100 million) in debt one day. The only way he can pay off the debt is to master "Hero-Gi" (downloaded off the net) and win matches in "Hero Battle," a new-generation cyber sport. The tagline of the game "Change your money with justice!"

Shogakukan's Monthly Corocoro Comic, the No.1 manga magazine for elementary school boys, already launched a manga tie-in. Popular characters from other manga series in the magazine will be available as "Hero-Gi" in the game itself.

For SEGA's sake they better hope it doesn't join the ranks of Gaist Crusher, and Gyrozetter.

The Wii U drop was expected. What note worthy game is coming out for that platform this month? Exactly.

Vita doing well is always awesome to see. I think it's a badass handheld.

Better hold for WiiU than I expected after the last chart.

Fantastic from Vita, you see Sony if you release games for the platform it actually sells !

Lol at the hope for Vita. It's a sunken ship. Not even James Cameron could pull that wreck from the abyss. As for Wii U, nothing outside of a Square Enix/Capcom collaboration of MonHunxDragon's Quest is going to save it, so buckle up kids.

Nice week for Vita. WiiU declined but not as sharply as I expected it to. Next week will definitely be interesting.

From last week:

Famitsu:

- 05./00. [PSV] Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster: Twin Pack # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2013.12.26} (¥7.140) - 134.645 / NEW <80-100%>

Media Create:

- 05./00. [PSV] Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster: Twin Pack # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2013.12.26} (¥7.140) - 149.132 / NEW

So the difference is because MC is tracking the FFX/X-2 Vita bundles?

I think these remasters could reach 500k in the next few weeks. The Vita version in particular seems to be having some traction. It now tracks over the PS3 one on Amazon and it went from rank 17 to rank 5 in just a few hours.

Great for Vita. FFX definitely deserves the sales. I've been playing it for a few hours now and its the strongest "I can't believe I'm playing this on a portable" moment I've ever had.

Wait, if the Vita version really doing greatly, taht mean we could expect to get FFXII HD on Vita as well right?

I feel these cross media projects fail because they try to do it all at once. Why not try to establish the game first, then bring in the anime and toys.

I'm a bit optimistic about the Wii U since a lot of the software is selling now. I still think hardware sales will continue to fall but not as bad as last year.

El Capitan Todd
Wii Party U, NSMBU and Wii Fit U are are given away in bundles.

The only two games that are selling are Takio and 3D world.

it's not that the other games aren't selling at all imho, as you states.
if the console was able to move some more units than expected it was also indeed because of the increased value perceived from the bundles, imho. and it's not that Mario U wasn't selling before the bundles too.

Great sales for Vita, Wii U and especially 3DS (despite being down from last year).

But can Vita sustain sales that are YoY? Doesn't that mean that Sony needs to drop the price even more and release a new Vita model? And how about the 3DS? Did it ever get a price drop last year? If not, wouldn't that be feasible together with a 2DS release this year?

Nice momentum for 3DS and WiiU software through the holidays. FFX/X-2 HD is doing really well too. The Vita release looks totally justified, considering how it basically doubled the sales. GTAV still charting is really pretty impressive. It's already the 7th best selling PS3 game of all time in Japan now iirc, and it looks like it might break into the 6th... possibly even the 5th.

Man I remember when certain people in this thread were calling Rockstar crazy for expecting 500k sales for GTA.

Come the January 29th Direct with actual release dates for MK8 in March (and hopefully SSB in April /dream) combined with a price drop, since Japan haven't got one so far (and hopefully a bundle or two /dreamharder) so Wii U can sustain its sales on a healthier baseline.

But if the only thing they have for Wii U is Donkey Kong in February it will be a abysmal, sustained drop.

That being said, Wii U hold it better than what I was expecting it this week. Good for Vita too. Now let us wait and see how depressing Week 2 will be.
