Well, as I pointed out in the previous thread, substract the christmas launch of DS, the 3DS is selling exactly the same way.

lhd8n.jpg

But thats because DS sales was also not very good at that time. 3DS will need to find its "nintendogs" to repeat the success of DS, and it may happen that its just not different enough to offer a new, unique experience that you have not already seen on the DS.

People are discussing the future of a series. A future that is to happen, whether there are rumours or not. A MonHun sequel will appear on a "next" gen portable at some point.

They will have to jump ship from PSP soon enough, I doubt NGP will have proven itself better than 3DS by then but if it has I'm sure people's theories at the time will reflect that.
Baseless assumptions are not fact. If Capcom will release MH on new hardware, it will be multi platform, or if worst case scenario for 3DS it will be PSP/NGP with network connectivity, so they don´t lose a lot of sales. MH won´t release on one new gen platform, which is realistic from sales/profit perspective.

Interesting graph. While I definitely think 3DS needs its defining games I wonder if it's as necessary as I once thought given the light of PSP sales. They could also go the PSP route and pile it up with enough ports and remakes of popular games that it sells based on selection rather than uniqueness. It's kinda funny to me 3DS gets trolled for porting when that's been one of the reasons PSP is still around and selling well in Japan. Apparently it's a viable strategy.

Well, I guess we all are welcoming our new (old?) PSP overlords. That's a pretty stunning victory for HW sales although I know it has alot to do with the HW shipments in Japan and keeping up with pent up demand.

It's pretty eye opening that a system that has very little relevance in the rest of the world is THE system to have right now in Japan. I have enjoyed watching the PSP's resurgence and the Japanese games that have made it over to the States the last few months are a direct result of it and there are more than a few gems in that list.

I honestly hope the resurgence and flow of software continues right on up to and through the launch of the NGP. As long as I can purchase quality software digitally then I can just carry it right on over to the NGP!

I don't remember that too well. I remember N1 and some other software companies taking flak for porting but this was well after release. The main argument against the PSP was that it was a watered down console experience.

So what? 3DS right now has a lot of ports, is that supposed to be invalidated because some ambiguous group of people may or may not have said similar things about a different system?

I keep having to remind myself that Professor Layton was a launch title for 3DS every time I think it had no software. What even happened there? Has the series just lost all swaying power? Is the 3DS to expensive for its target audience to buy just for one game?

I'm not sure why you bolded that, and responded with this. Where did I claim facts, other than that the PSP will, at some point, die off, like every system ever? What, you don't think people's theories in a year or so (if we're still discussing this, if Capcom have yet to make announcements) will reflect the situation in the future, as they reflect the current situation now? Oh well, I do, and we disagree. Neither is a fact or claimed as such. At least not by me. I'm not sure why you took it that way really.

If Capcom will release MH on new hardware, it will be multi platform
Sure, why not? Many franchises have jumped to one or more platforms, MonHun might as well. I suggested that also.

or if worst case scenario for 3DS it will be PSP/NGP
Maybe, maybe not. A nice theory I don't fully agree with (unless the next title is a mere G type expansion than a full sequel as I already said) and have explained why. Feel free to disagree. It's all speculation. They will have to dump the PSP at some point and since you also think it won't be exclusive to a platform (that's still not a fact, it might be) that only really leaves the 3DS as a second system that can handle MonHun's core aspects (including portability). I'm not sure why this appears so extreme?

What began strong stays strong?

I wonder why it's so skewed towards the PS1. Could it have to do with the abrupt endings Nintendo systems (usually) have, as opposed to zombie-like way Sony systems behave?

I wonder how small is "extremely small". I mean, compared to Spirit Tracks, sure, the vast majority of game shipments are extremely small.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Thats what inwas thinking - 150-200K would probably seem "small" but would be the right amount for a first shipment looking at the potential 3ds usebase by then.

Nintendo doesn't want to create what's happened with all thoese 3ds software up above:

1. Wholesalers demanded stores take at least 2 games per system brought. so around 800,000 games were shipped you can assume.
2. People brought the 3ds without buying games,
3. People sold back the 3ds, tons of 3ds on the shelves thus making the user base even smaller.
4. Large overstock of games now seeing 40-50% price cuts.

June 16 is very far away. If preorders are big Nintendo will ship more. Extremely small possibly means something like 1/3 or 1/2 of the initial shipment of Spirit Tracks.

I don't think you can directly compare budget versions of hits like Monster Hunter with re-releases of low-key titles like Muramasa. Everyone's Recommendation (supposedly at least) wasn't based on the sales (and if it was, it was probably low, rather than high, sales), unlike ranges like Greatest Hits, Platinum, or whatever those are called these days.

I really think that is an unheralded part of the PSP's success. The disc format lets you do this (since it's much cheaper than carts). I know MH probably makes a big chunk of that, but almost everything major on PSP does get re-released as a budget title.

Interesting to see how much of a handicap the NGP will have because of carts from a business point of view.

Thanks for the numbers Chris :) I knew MH made big numbers, but I didn't know that some PS3 games made very good numbers (looking at CD4, Demon Souls and Hots Shots Golf). That was my surprise, seeing PS3 numbers = 2 x Wii numbers.

What I find commendable is that PSP is trucking along and Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has really turned it around. It would be a stunning accomplishment and a credit to Sony if, at the end of the PSP gen, they approach or even exceed PS2 LTD numbers. Truly remarkable.
I think they will get PS1 like numbers, not PS2 like numbers.

Contrast this with those Nintendo blowhards whose support often drops after 3 or 4 years and the schedule dries up completely thereafter.
Why are you giving Sony credit for Capcom's accomplishments? :p

Will there be any console deals during Golden Week?

PSP was a runaway success before Monster Hunter?
Without the PSP, the MH franchise might not have been as popular. Without the MH franchise, the PSP might not have been as popular. Credits to both Capcom and Sony i guess :)

I'm sure it sold decently for the first year it didn't have one. But that's not what I was implying.
Yep, the PSP did actually sold fairly well (maybe like 25k each week in average) before MHP2 got released. I dont know about the PSP software sales though.

I'd say that's fair. My point was though that SCE themselves have seemed pretty asleep at the wheel when it comes to PSP, if anything I'd argue the system is largely a notable success despite them. Especially compared to the effort they funneled into turning PS3 around.
