I think that Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze would have to have a ~20% drop tops next week for it to be any indication that snow had any meaningful impact on the first week's sales.

According to previous console launch shipments?

I may overexaggerated, but my point is that it's lower than compared to generally other and previous console launch shipments.

Not really:
Wii U - 308,142
Vita - 324,859
3DS - 374,764
Wii - 350,358
PS3 - 81,639
360 - 43,970

Those are the sell-through estimates for the last several launches, if it sells through most of a 350k shipment then that is perfectly in line with previous launches.

Hell, even the WIi was only doing 25k a week during its prime.
I don't think that's true. A quick eyeball of Garaph shows Wiikly averages around 70k in 2007 and 50k in 2008 (ignoring pre-holiday slumps and holiday spikes). It wasn't until after the third holiday and into 2009 that Wii's numbers got down to 25k/week.

There is still another financial meeting between now and MK8's launch and it's the big one. I really don't understand how the console can still be losing money tbh. In simple terms it's PS360 level hardware with a cheap 6" tablet screen. Did he actually say in the last quarterly meeting that WiiU is still losing money on each unit sold ?.

It was in the earnings report:

The “Wii U” hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits owing mainly to its markdown in the United States and Europe

There are amazing lines in Yamada Denki in Ikebukuro to buy PS4:

2 sales confirmed!

Fortunatly, in Bic Camera there're more people lining:

Was the snow actually that bad? The heatwaves was something we just made up, but since Media Create is actually mentioning the snow I kind of wonder how bad it was.

It was the worst snowfall in the last 45 years in Tokyo, more than 20cm, and in the north of Japan it was much worst. Around a dozen of people died due to the snowfall.
Besides that stupid hirony someone made, it probably had some effects on sales.

Maybe 20cm of snow is not so much for most of us, but in Tokyo they are not used to have snowfall (last year it snowed just one day in January), so a heavy snowfall produces some problems, for example, all trains stop, and in Tokyo most of people use train or subway to move around the city.
If there are heatwaves it's hot, but you can catch a train and go wherever you want, if there is a lot of snow and trains are stopped, why you should go outside ?

Cool, thanks for the clarification. Nintendo really screwed up by building WiiU around backwards compatibility. A console on par with WiiU performance using PS4 like off the shelf PC parts would probably cost no more than $150 to build, $199 with the tablet... They could have built a console 50% as powerful as XBone with the tablet for the same price WiiU launched at aswell :/.

Is it wrong to be excited by those Japanese PS4 launch pics even although I have had one since EU launch ? ;).

Yeah that's true. Last week i couldn't get to my work because my line wasn't working (Yamanote Line in Tokyo).

But as Chris said, maybe we're talking about 5-10k sales lost. So not much difference, really.

350k doesn't seem like excessively bullish or bearish supply. But it's outside the holiday period, in a softer console market, few big titles that aren't available elsewhere and with the Japanese consumer caring less about the technical upgrade.

I'd guess they end up with like a 60% sell-through or so - around the 200k mark.

I think they'll take a couple weeks to sell that through and have maybe an 150k shipment worth of resupply in the fiscal year as the N-B CEO suggested.

Ha, contrast that to the German video of people storming the malls. Total culture clash between the two.

Plus, it is looking what many of us have predicted: consoles gaming has just moved on from Japan. It will sell "ok" but media create sales I think in a few months are going to be a cry fest.

I don't remember what I predicted first week sales would be (though I think I did predict something), but I stand by it.
BELIEVE!

I'd be surprised if the PS4 struggles to sell this early on. Wii U hit 300K, Vita hit 300K, 3DS hit 350K. Has the console market dried up that much, is the PS4 that much less appealing to the type of consumer that buys a console on day one?
It might take two or three months before things slump.

Regarding the Famitsu most wanted list. Is it usual for a Mario Kart to be there? Honest question. It doesn't mean anything, but it seems out of place there.

If the PS4 has a poor time early on it will have more to do with the lineup than anything else.

did something change ?

Yamada Denki is still empty. But I think Yamada Denki is more a Nintendo's friend shop, than a Sony's one.

Bic Camera line is the same as in the photo. So at least is not becoming shorter for the moment.
I'm not seeing much hype around, but we'll see what happens in next MC thread.

Also I think will be more interesting to check tomorrow or monday if there're sold outs, 'cause I doubt we'll see today. So if the 350k shipment it's true, then we can expect how much it sold.

Wii U and VITA both launched during holidays. 3DS is a handheld to follow the best selling system of all time. PS4 doesn't have either benefit.

As for MK, it always charts on Famitsu most wanted list.

Basically holiday spending season. Which is primarily why I questioned Sony's strategy of skipping the 2013 holiday season to sell systems in other countries(primarily in Asia). Now its 3 months later, and they'll have crappier sales to show for it.

What's to question? The bulk of supply was reserved to furnish supply in North America and Western Europe, with basically minimal launches everywhere else. And that supply has still been somewhat insufficient. The Japanese market would have strained supply much further than whatever small amount went to Hong Kong.

Reserving 350K for launching in the, ultimately less important, Japanese market in holiday 2013 would have been a poor decision.

It looks so far PS4 will land many back to Japanese reality much sooner than expected. Lack of hype at launch means only faster collapse next week(s).

We'll have to wait for PS4 opening sales and DK amazing legs next days.

I think we're disagreeing how successful a 'sold out' launch is vs. the likely slow roll that the PS4 will experience. The end result will likely be the same, but we're entering an era that there will be no console 'winner' in Japan, just losers. The market has clearly moved on to handhelds and mobile, with mobile just eating more and more market share.

Sounds disappointing :(.

Square, you better sort out your shit fast and release a new FF on PS4 before it's too late.

It was really weird that people expected PS4 to be a hit just because it was in other regions, despite the clear difference in cultures.

According to Dengeki online :

100 people this morning at Yodobashi Akiba (people started line on friday at 15:00)
20 people at Sofmap Akihabara
70 people at Bic Camera Ikebukuro
40 people at Bic Camera Yurakucho
70 people at Tsutaya Shibuya

Kinda.

I for one expect the PS4 to be the "best selling system" for the coming month. But looking at the numbers now I wouldn't call that a feat.

I just hope it pushes the Japanese devs to actually try and give us in the west some goodies if the market stays stagnant in the east. Not Everyone Can Jump On That Annoying Mobile Train.

It can't all be like this
BgFnDfI.jpg
Because it'll end up like this instead ↓
s5m8a85.jpg
Or at least dip their toes and I hope us the consumer give them a shoot even if it's "low/mid-tier" budget games coming instead of just harping on about SE.

so we have 300 confirm sales.. So PS4 is going to beat X360 for sure. :)

It has more to do with the launch lineup than anything else. The best selling title will be a port of a spinoff. And Sonys own highlights are Killzone and Knack...

this is gonna be a super slow year for ps4, it was very apparent after their tgs event and complete lack of interest from 3rd parties. Maybe next year...

Looking how other platforms are doing, it's going to be a very terrible year for hardware sales overall, just how bad we'll see...

Sony doesn't have a good history with launches lately. Most of them didn't meet retailers' expectations and they stayed with unsold stock.

PSP Go - bombed
Vita - underperformed
Vita TV - bombed
Vita-2000 - good but nothing spectacular
PS4 - ?

Pretty much. The known PS4 software lineup is Western focused at this point, for the most part. Thing will eventually change in time, but the PS4 will likely do low numbers in Japan for a good portion of 2014.

It's not about the launch.
PS4 has nothing interesting for japanese users after MG:GZ (port) and FF XIV (port).
Sales will be pretty bad this entire year.

Well, if we go worldwide

PSP Go - bombed
Vita - bombed
Vita TV - bombed (if and when it gets released)
Vita-2000 - bombed (when it gets released)

But I doubt retailers will bother to stock much for Sony's next handheld launches.

True I simply meant that you were including PS4 in that and WW it's had the best hardware launch ever. Pretty sure in the history of VG consoles/ handhelds. It's still tracking ahead of the PS2 and Wii WW isn't it?
