PS4's future is looking a little brighter in Japan, devs just need to release some more big games, especially exclusives.

this depends on whether japanese devs care about the fast selling rate of the PS4 in the west. Japan itself will never be a factor, I think.

the thing that baffles me is that they behave like "thanks Sony for selling your thing but no thanks, we are too busy doing mobile crap".

I really hope they prove me wrong and the announcements keep pouring in this E3.

Why does that surprises you? They've been doing that to the 3DS for the past 4 years and that's multiple times more than the PS4 will ever hope to sell in Japan, the ship has sailed.

E3.

Why is this baffling? The mobile profit margin is so appealing that they would be stupid not to capitalize on it. This is especially true for companies that have no product that they know could win over consumers in the west.

500k-1M is a huge margin. It's better to look at stuff in more segments. There are many, many more titles which sell 400-600k compared to titles which sell 600-800k for example. It's definitely not the "same category". If Persona 5 manages to actually sell in the 500k range, it would be comparable to stuff like Yakuza, not stuff like RE6 and One Piece Musou. Incidentally, there's a Yakuza game coming out right about now!

Fair point, did Ishin managed to reach 400k though? (also it's the second title being PS3/PS4, it should have less impact to sell PS4 hardware)

It's more a matter of opinion, because if we define 400-600k and 600k-800k categories, I feel like Persona 5 may end up right up in the middle of these two.
I know you have a different take on its potential, and there's not really much to debate about it, just wait and see how the game will sell when it's released :)

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax sold a total of 108,515 copies on both PS3 and Vita, and that's pretty good for a fighting game.

Can we expect a sequel?

Ishin didn't do that well (just shy of 400k), but it outperformed Kenzan (less than 300k). Both are period spin-offs of the more traditional urban Yakuza series. Yakuza Zero should be expected to perform much better, unless the series is declining again.

If Persona 5 does 600k, it would definitely be bigger than I expect, so I agree. But as it stands, I think it's obvious why many people won't consider Persona to be a title on the same level as DQH and MGSV right now. Those should be the biggest titles of the year out of those announced so far for PS3+PS4. Persona and Yakuza Zero would be big titles on a smaller scale. Followed by Bloodborne which should be interesting because it has 300k+ potential based on the Souls series in the past, but it's also a PS4 exclusive so that might limit it. Or it might not. We'll see. :)

I don't really believe it, due to Sega's change of focus and the difficulties of making collaborations/crossovers.

Why would there be any difficulty? I expect a sequel or expansion type release announced before the end of the year honestly.

How long has that Shining fighting game been in the arcades? That's probably a decent candidate for a port if it has any semblance of popularity.

An update on Final Fantasy Legends, as of today.

Here's the former analysis from February 24th

http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=153481271&postcount=486

This time, let's start with iOS - iPhone

iPhone Download Ranks

tcYPEMp.png

The game was 75th on February 24, in a downward trend. And, well, that trend didn't stop. The game left the Top 100 on February 26th, and it never came back. Last Sunday, it exited from the Top 200 as well, and it seems it won't come back that soon. Considering how the game reached 1 million total downloads right on February 24th, and how it's still between 100,000 and 500,000 on Google Play, it probably means that first days downloads (plus the brief return in Top 5/10) were very, very high, then those went down fast, if not collapsed.

iPhone Grossing Ranks

It was 73rd on February 24th, and it continued slowing for a while (even going out of Top 100 between February 28th and March 2nd), then bouncing back. Now, it's going down again; also, the highest rank for the game in the past few days was 63rd. So, not exactly high in charts, at all.

Now, let's move to Google Play

Google Play Download Ranks

It was 6th on February 24th and it actually went higher, topping the chart on February 27th. It left the top 10 only on March 3rd. This is a huge contrast compared to what's going on in the App Store, where the downloads collapsed. Here, it's still doing legitimately well, even if it's (possibly) slowing down here as well. Still, nothing like iOS.

Google Play Grossing Rank

It was 42nd on February 24th. After that, it stayed between 40th and 50th for a while, until March 1st, when it left Top 50 and its grossing slowed down. And now, it's around 70th - 75th.
So, mid-Top 100 at best and going down currently. What's quite curious, though, is that it's currently behind...Bravely Archive in the Grossing Chart on Google Play: it's been like that since February 28th.

So, trying to recap what seen here, could we say that Final Fantasy Legends is

- performing awfully in terms of Downloads, less than mediocre in terms of Grossing on iOS
- performing well in terms of Downloads and between decent to mediocre in terms of Grossing on Google Play?

Why would there be any difficulty? I expect a sequel or expansion type release announced before the end of the year honestly.

Well it depends on the contracts.
If it's a quick expansion/enhanced re-release, it's usually not much to do, but for a sequel, I guess they would have to find new characters to use, the permission of the right holders, make deals (which may not be good for this or that company), be sure that everyone is ok with having his character do that and be in the same game as this other character, etc.

I still can't believe how some companies decided to launch their PS4 games on the same day as Bloodborne and One piece when the competition even a week later is almost non existent. I would guess that NIS and Marvelus are expecting to close their Fiscal year with the FW sales of their games. But even then it would have been better to be on the shelves this week, after DQH big splash and before other big titles to take the stand (RE:R2, Yakuza, etc etc), I just hope it doesn't ended up hurting neither of them, though I would guess Marvelus is in a better spot thanks to the Vita version of SK which should be the best selling version of the game (at least in Japan).

Also the lack of announcements for the months of May-Sep and even worse the lack of big games for the Japanese market (usually western markets fill this gap with sport games which are far more popular in the west than in Japan) seems to be a huge dry storm in the next months for PS4 until MGS V gets released.

What contracts and deals? Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax uses characters from the Dengeki Bunko label of various light novels series. They are all owned by Kadokawa. It's one company. :p

Is there really that big of a crossover between the audience for Bloodborne and NIS style releases?

The spin offs usually sells 10-20k on the PSP. I expected a full voice version of the main game on the most popular platform to sell way more than that.

It's a porting from PSP. The Full Voice Edition was released in 2013.

Is there really that big of a crossover between the audience for Bloodborne and NIS style releases?

There must be an oddball like myself in Japan that is interested (on different levels) in almost every game and I could see myself buying each one if it wasn't for the fact that they are all packed together in a single month (or day) but I don't consider myself the standard consumer so I would assume that they don't overlap that much, but my point isn't about overlapping fanbase but more with the fact of moving away when the fat guys are jumping to the pool. Even more when we consider how front loaded the videogame industry is.

Is like how Nation wide movies would avoid to release on the same week as Avengers: Age of Ultron, if you are not an entirely complete opposite experience or in impulse purchase territory you can only get hurt by other big releases and even more when you are sandwiched among many of them on a short period of time. It seems that the most sensible solution would have been letting the guys with big marketing budgets and expectations to let their blow out and then you move in with your little propositions to your niche fanbase on a non so busy/competitive week.

It has very little new content (just some illustrations and songs), while the spin offs in the PSP have new characters. I would have preferred them to release it on the vita myself, but I doubt it would have done much better since they have released practically the same game about four times now.

I kinda hope it's a bomba so I can snag it for cheap.

I don't see WiiU getting a big sales bump until Xenoblade/Starfox/TLOZ come out, even then it may be too late for a big turnaround. PS4 seems to be slowly taking off. Even for a long time weekly sales showed WiiU outselling PS4, which as said that time may be over.

Lol, that game has been released in the ps2,ps3,PSP,DS, and PSV. I think people are a bit tired of it already. New Hakuoki game SSL did much better at ~21k, which was pretty good. But I think the hard hitters in otome are Hakuoki, UtaPri, and Harukanaru.

As an otome fan, week after next will be interesting. I wonder if the new UtaPri will manage to sell 60k+ in the PSP like the previous ones.

"wow" at PS4 > 3DS. Didn't see that coming at all.

During DQH release week?

The spin offs usually sells 10-20k on the PSP. I expected a full voice version of the main game on the most popular platform to sell way more than that.

A porting of a 2-year old game -which was already a porting- sold about what expected. Also, the game was announced and released completely under the radar.
