Any bookworm GAFs looking forward to the new Kindles? I was hoping to see a new Oasis, but I guess Amazon has decided ditch this product line.

Gonna check out some reviews and decide if I want to try the new color Kindle.

Darkness no more
I ordered the new Paperwhite. It will be here before 8am tomorrow. My current one is 10 years old and doesn't hold a charge that well anymore.

I debated getting the color one, but if something requires a lot of color it is probably something I would rather have a physical book for.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
My wife has the first generation Scribe, and she likes it a lot. We're getting older, so having the larger screen real estate (along with the ability to increase the font size) is a nice luxury. She never uses the writing function. Wish they just made "Kindle for old fuckers", I'd buy that one.

Guys, if it's still within 30 days. Just return it, Amazon has the best customer service. Just say you want to upgrade to the newest version, they wouldn't ask a single word.
It's been a little longer. Not a huge deal. They just made it faster. Usually I hold onto these things till they die. The last one I just did because of USB c.

Waiting for reviews of the color eink, particularly refresh and crispness. With a little larger size it could be perfect for comics. It's taken them over a decade to deliver, 'bout damn time!.

Imagine Amazon buys Dark Horse or, gasp, DC and puts ALLLL those comics on there as part of prime. OMG!

Though I think those guys have subscription services already.

Nice.

I mix my reading between Kindle and physical books.

For classics and nonfiction books, I always go physical. Especially for nonfiction. Also, having a personal library is awesome. Also, unlike the Kindle, I own my physical books. Some are very valuable and my library can be passed down to future generations.

The Kindle however is amazing for traveling. I took it to Rhodes with me recently and read 3 books. So much better than taking 3 books and using valuable language weight.

Just FYI, your future generation is throwing them right in the trash. Nobody wants old smelly books taking up shelve space.
Don’t be that kind of person :D

Eh. I’d like a new toy, but the thing with Kindles is, there’s really no good reason to get a new one at this point.
My current Paperwhite is around 10 years old, and it still does its job without a hitch. Still holds a charge like a champ. Sure, the screen is only 6” and… what reason is there to get a slightly bigger screen, really? It’s just text.
Upgrading from the 212ppi version to the 300ppi was a visible upgrade at the time, but in the end I read almost zero pdfs on my Kindle since then, so even that upgrade wasn’t so major in the end.

For color, we’d need tablet-like resolution to get a good comic book-reading experience, and this Colorsoft is 150 ppi in color mode. It’s not the revolution they want to make it sound like.

Now that I have all that out of my system, you can half expect me to say something about my new 7” Paperwhite by Christmas.

EDIT: I just saw the prices. €300 for the Colorsoft? €170 for the Paperwhite? You’ve gotta be kidding me. My current Paperwhite will stay with me for much, much longer, lol.

Then they'd be throwing away money.

If my family doesn't want them then they can be donated to a library, school etc.

There is value in physical books. With a kindle, I'm just renting text files from Amazon.

I love my Paperwhite Kindle (bought years ago; I forget which generation it is but it has wi-fi). It's exactly what I want (to read books), and nothing more. Absolutely lightweight, portable, excellent contrast for reading outdoors on sunny days. It's a bit slow on the UI stuff but that's ok.

For anything else I'd use a proper tablet.

Used a tablet to read a book once and it felt like I was reading an article rather than a book. I'll stick to actual books.

I tried reading on my iPad Pro, but it just never felt right or like reading a book even if I had page flip instead of scrolling. With my Kobo Libra 2 the feel is much better and I feel like I'm reading a book.

It will never be a 1:1 comparison as a book has texture and smell and you can read it in very low lights. But having a very light device that I can read books on without waiting on orders for is a good trade-off. Also being able to have my whole library with me on trips is even better. Not to mention the backlight so I don't need an external lightsource.

I have last gen Paperwhite but decided fuck it I want the new one. The only difference is 0.2" larger screen, double storage, and longer battery life. Amazon gave me 38% discount when trading in my 11th gen so... 🤷‍♂️

The colorsoft looks cool but pixel density is 150ppi compared to the 300ppi for B&W and battery life is lower.

it feels like this should have already happened years ago.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
Why does Amazon sell Kindles with 16 GB or even 32 GB of storage when ebooks are incredibly small? I only have a couple of dozen ebooks on my own Kindle. So what's the point of being able to store more than 10,000 books on a Kindle?

The most obvious answer is that some people might want to store all of their books on it even if they aren't reading them. Just like how some people want to store all their games on their console/PC even though they won't play them regularly.

Magazines, Comics, Visual Novels, etc are larger in size than ebooks. For example, one volume of the Persona 5 manga is ~300MB. One of the Walking Dead compendiums is 2.3GB.

Also, you can send documents to your kindle. PDFs, JPEGs, GIFs, etc.

And you can download Audible books to your kindle to listen to them and of course Audiobooks take up more storage. You might fit thousands of ebooks on a kindle but "only" maybe <100 audiobooks.

Having more storage space is better than them skimping on it. They could easily still sell Kindles with 4GB and most people would be fine with that but 16GB is the base now I think.

I'm gonna get the new Paperwhite Signature Edition. I need that maximum contrast. It sounds like the color tech is still not quite there, and not worth the loss in clarity/contrast.

Been waiting on colour eink forever. Pretty awesome. Gotta see if it works well. The tech isn’t totally new but it’s been hard to execute. Time to find some reviews.

saw one review saying it's not as sharp and looks dull. it's first gen product. unless you are reading magazines/comics then it's probably not worth buying it.

Colour e-ink could be an absolute gamechanger. Really want to see it in person before deciding whether or not to get one of these though.

I have an ancient Kindle Oasis that seems to be dying. It will have to be replaced soon but no actual buttons is a bummer.

It's because of Audible, you can upgrade an ebook for pretty cheap and I have some Audible books that are over 1GB.

Yep, thinking 100% about comics. I feel it’s a bit late to the game as it would have done especially well when people were really into marvel stuff.

Comics and stuff, i guess. They can do audio books as well.

Mostly I think it's "forced" pricing tiers because I doubt you can even get a 8 or 16gig memory stick for less than a 32 stick these days, who makes stuff so small anymore?

For me the #1 reason to upgrade from my old Kindle was the usb-c port. I'm almost completely free from fucking micro-usb or whatever that annoying standard was for small electronics :p

Color Kindle will be mine on Cyber Monday.

To me a B/W e-ink reader is already sort of magical, so I think a color version will be very cool. There's just something special about a device that can be "on" for weeks and still have battery left. I think I'll go for a color reader when my Kobo throws in the towel, even if I mostly just read normal books.

It's not likely to be great for comics, as the resolution in colour mode is only 25% of what it is in black and white. Also, the screen is too small for that.

I've got an older basic Kindle from about 10 years ago. Read a few books on it but I've never really got along with it.

You can't flip easily between pages to check something you read earlier, which I'm constantly doing with paper books. Also, you can't read it in the bath (unless one of the new models is waterproof).

I wonder if they will integrate the features that Comixology has into it as well?

Went to look on Amazon and it doesn’t look like it is coming to Canada.
