The issue is that the model probably has no idea what it is doing or why, so yeah it can recreate this very specific thing that it has seen a billion hours of... cool I guess? But not AI.
Hate to tell you but that’s how all major models work in 2024.

The people generating are not the one creating the base model. Also hands issues are things of the past already.

I almost exactly predicted this about a year ago, only I predicted we’d be seeing this level of progress by 2026.

Even with my pretty liberal predictions, it seems like AI is outpacing where I thought it’d be.

What part of what I said is not true? Your thoughts are either probabilistic or deterministic just like we are discussing with AI models - Not much of a dialectic here, as any amount of probability introduced into an otherwise heavily weighted deterministic system still leads to a probabilistic output. And this is partially how weighting works when training models.

Just because you add a new variable has no bearing on that other than it might influence weights. Still probability.

AI used in this way has astronomical potential.
Imagine a game that starts out like Grand Theft Auto but with minecraft like tendencies.
Literally everything can be explored, destroyed \ created, fixed, and or randomized in real time.
But, gameplay can switch to call of duty, tekken 8, Gran turismo, final fantasy 7, or whatever was added and it all works effortlessly.
Or any combination at any given time.

A 2 billion dollar game that takes 20 years to make can now be created daily.
We are NOT READY for ai's real power.

With AI, don't look where it's at now, but there it's heading.
And.... Microsoft acquisition in 3...2....1

I mean, he's at least right that they are quite a lot like the brain though.

When someone says "oh it's just predicting the next frame/word/etc" I immediately know that they don't have any sense of how an organism's brain -- even ours -- is fundamentally built on exactly that.

You are correct that this is not exactly a "real time engine", but it is much closer than ever. It is trained simply by watching videos of this game - the fact that it can come this far is beyond impressive to me. From videos of this game it can generate a playable environment emulating the engine rules as they exist in Minecraft, physics, as well as other game logics. Based on just observation of the game being played, not the back end. This is something noteworthy.



I never said that. I did say, however, real time engine generation is coming. It is. I'm not even the biggest fan of long term implications of AI - doesn't mean it's not coming. Sooner than most think IMO in various regards, but it's just speculation. I completely agree with you that we are not "there" yet, but surely you agree the leaps and strides made in the last few years are simply phenomenal? In terms of what kind if output we used to see versus what kind of output can be had now with similar size prompts, etc?
It will come for sure, but it will be used as a tool.

I jus think those expecting themselves to type in any number of games and try mish mash their own game aren't going to get what they desire at any time in the near future.

right now it's cloning Minecraft and from what we are seeing in demonstrations it doesn't seem like it's doing a very good job at that so far anyway.

You are looking at an advanced A.I that was trained on looking at Minecraft gameplay and then through using a state of the art diffusion model is able to generate each frame in real time. There is no game engine. It's not a clone of Minecraft.

There technology will improve rapidly. If you are not super impressed then you really don't know what's going on.

Wouldn’t this create tons of problems with object permanence, physics, etc.

This doesn’t seem very practical for an actual game.

If you have to explain this, then the technology has failed. First impression counts, it's not the job of the consumer to know the potential for AI, that's what marketing team is for.

I'm guessing the reason they called it Oasis is because they're going specifically for the Ready Player One style all games all universe type of thing that you're talking about. Didn't think I'd actually see something like that before I shuffled off the mortal coil honestly. Give it a few years and a whole lot more power I guess....

all this talk sounds like the same "Web3" talk we got years ago.

ML is going to (and already does) help game development, but this tech is going to need an astronomical amount of data in order for you to say "Create GTA 6 but set in russia" and then you have a full massive 60 hour campaign, open world with physics simulations and ai and so on. The only applications i see of this is in something like real estate and warehouse planning where you can stitch together a virtual environment with photos.

About needing astronomical amounts of data, you're exactly right...

But what is your point? You bring that up like it's an Achilles heel. There are thousands up on thousands of technologies in the world that require, consume, utilize, improve themselves upon, filter, create, etc. astronomical amounts of data.

The more data something requires, the more powerful it is likely to be.

You seem like a cool guy, don't take any of this as an attack - even if my earlier comments were kind of rude. I appreciate the conversation.

We are in a thread specifically talking about real time A.I. generated gaming that looks superficially like a regular 3D game. Of course the technology has to be talked about and explained. That’s the whole point of this thread.

Yea, I feel like it could work for games that look and play a lot like another already existing game. So minecraft already exists and it can learn to replicate it, but conjuring an original game out of nowhere is probably not going to happen anytime soon. Unless you prompt it to take "graphics like Cyberpunk, crafting like Minecraft and shooting like Fortnite".
But then you end up with just 'remixes' of games and they'll probably play a lot like each other.

If you really want to create something very specific and original you'd end up with prompts that are as long as most source codes at some point.

Folks that thinks this stuff is far into the future have no idea what’s coming down the pipe and just how quickly it’s going to happen. You have the biggest technology companies on a global level pouring vast sums of money into this rapidly accelerating technology. It’s a matter of a short few years rather than decades.

This is somewhat how I was thinking when watching the video. As they progress, there's going to be a need for something to keep the AI generation on rails if one wants an actual playable game that has a certain level of consistency and quality.

One thing I see with AI generated gaming is an increased sense of loneliness. Let's say two people play together in a Minecraft like world. They start at two different points and aim to find each other. How well would that work? In a way, it would be like two different worlds colliding. Increase that to five, ten or fifty players than it becomes increasingly more complex having these players interact in a non-static world.

The way I see it there will be powerful AI tools out there to use in the future. These will be used by talented creative people to create experiences for people like me to enjoy. They will have to invest a lot of time in using these tools to create something enjoyable. I know I won't be one of these people.

I think something like what's in the Oasis video would be better for interactive movies and that kind of thing. Maintaining coherence across multiple users in a multiplayer game I'd assume will almost require some basic geometry running with an ai overlay on top of it. But what do I know, if I could figure this shit out I'd be rich.
