I know I originally said I wasn't buying but fuck it, I'm going for the Skeleton horde. Since I'm shipping internationally is Game Workshop my best option?

If you dont have a shop around you(like a hobbies one) and amazon wont ship to you, yeah GW is the best option. The costliest too :|

I checked amazon and it would cost the same, 50 GBP. Thanks to the drop in the currency's value though it's cheaper than buying in USD.

No shop near me, which sucks.

I haven't painted anything in so long and now my Tau Pathfinders are some rough going. Sorry guys, I know you wanted to be all pretty, but you look like my first minis when I was 13. It still has a long way to go to even be a complete paint job, but here is the horror of my work in progress:

RXymlu5.jpg

I think I am going to mix the purple with some dark red and redo it. The feet need to be painted, there's a bunch of little touch ups to do, and small details added, and I think the gun looks bland, but I am uncertain what to do with it. I want to eventually paint yellow sept stripes, but getting straight lines at this point is going to be impossible for me.

not terrible really for just base colors. I find that everything I paint looks like trash before I hit it with a wash.

painting red is hard, also. You might get a better result if you build up from brown or dark orange rather than trying to put it straight over black.

While waiting for my stuff to arrive, I wanted to ask something. Other than glue I think I have everything I need but I wanted to make sure my colors will work for the Skeletons. Here's my current collection:

Oh god, it's ugly, UGLY!

Just messing around. Don't be so hard on yourself especially since you're just coming back. You don't have to compare your results to Android 18. And when my stuff comes and if I start working on them it will look like a Michelangelo piece in comparison to what I'll bring to the table.

Enamel paints are going to be hard as hell, if not downright impossible to get good results on miniatures. They are specialty use only. They are way too thick and glossy. You need to use acrylic paints, first and foremost.

Those Tamiya paints are amazing for many different effects though. One of the best paint purchases I ever made!

The feel when you use a layer paint instead of a base paint and youre wondering why you need to use multiple coats to get a consistent coloring

yup. I like the vallejo game color and vallejo model air and game air lines because they are in convenient droppers which makes them easy to thin and mix. Each one is about $3 I think.

I will definitely be trying something different with the next pathfinder for the red. It took maybe five layers to cover the black and by that point even with a lot of thinning it looks thick.

My enamel collection is rather small, but thanks for warning me from using it.

Hmm, seems to be reasonably nice weather, i could start painting my minis again... Oh, what the fuck, it is raining snow?

Seriously. Finnish goddamn weather. Snowing in middle of spring. After few warm weeks.

Sup miniature GAF! I've got a question. I picked up a box of GW's start collecting Orks set and I was kinda surprised on how small the bases are. I was wondering, what size bases do you all usually go for with your models of do you just use the ones given?

A small taste of what I've been doing when the little guy lets me.

He'll look great with the guy you posted earlier.

Well, this happened

I really, really like your style with these. Not neat and pretty, but instead they look battle tested and like they've seen and done some shit. The black & white with subtle hints of red really draw you to them. I bet an entire army or even a kill team painted entirely in this scheme would look great on the tabletop.

Thanks, I can't paint white neat and pretty so I'm happy this approach works lol.

I have a kill team of...around 1000 points, just going to take a while with my new life with the mini me :)

Boy do I have a special treat for you all! I am currently breaking down, organizing, and taking a total inventory of all the miniatures I own. While doing this, I have come across many of my older models that for whatever reason, have not made it to the dip bucket that's full of metal miniatures getting stripped. That bucket has been full of miniatures for about 12 years now, but that's another story. Onto the minis!

I figure these are around 1991ish, making me around 16 at the time. I would have been painting off and on for about 4 years, but the Eldar were my first "serious" attempt. It was the colors man! And the lore, of course. I loved it all. Some are a little banged up, but you get the point.

I still love my use of color here. I wouldn't change a thing, other than shading, bases, and detail of course. I always liked my bright green scorpions and purple warp spiders better than GW's.

Not sure where all my Harlequins are. Probably in the bucket. I had Red, Blue, Purple, and Green squads with 2 black death jesters and a rainbow colored leader incorporating all squad colors. The looked good in their respective squads as well as mixing and matching for larger squads. I will totally use this same color scheme if/when I ever do a modern Harlequin troupe.

The warlocks were painted back when only the Farseer worse craftworld colors and the warlocks themselves were garish and individualistic.

Next, we have some Necromunda! Once again, most of my gangs are in the bucket, but here are some that didn't get soaked yet. I may very well finish some of these off properly and keep them around for the new game!

I ran a spyrer gang as well as an arbies and Van Saar gangs. I have full Cawdor, Escher, Orlock, Goliath, and redemptionists (as well as about 5-6 hired guns!). Looks like they're all in the bucket though, lol.

I got lots more too!

I woke up this morning with the inspiration for my Elder. Finally, after all these years I have a color scheme! I can't wait to paint some up.

Oh man this is a tiny detail but those red-yellow cabochon gems in the fourth pic, dude second from the left, look GREAT.

Lovely old minis there Eskimo! :) I really, really want to get myself an Esher gang for Necromunda again. I had one back then but it got given away by my parents :(

Anyway, this weekend I painted a Kill Team for New-cromunda (aka Shadow War Armageddon)...

Your scouts look great. Did you plan out/write up a 1000pt squad before you painted them or just paint them straight away?

I am currently planning out 1000pt squads for the game and will then paint from there. This is proving to be immense fun in and of itself.

I planned out 3-4 different scount configurations before selecting exactly what I am going to modify and paint. Each squad was quite a bit different, surprisingly.

I just built and painted the kit as I thought looked cool. Haven't really given any thought as to what would be a decent playable kill team in-game. I'll work that out about five minutes before I play I suppose, I don't really enjoy making lists and stuff. I just want to throw stuff on the table and roll dice XD

Well, for me there is also a big element of practicality since I have 6 kill teams on deck awaiting the attention of my brush. I think I only need 5-6 scouts painted up instead of 10, so it will save me some time. Likewise, my orks only have 8. Tyranids warriors only get 3, and I worked that list 6 ways from Sunday in order to get 4 and still be decent.

These lists are quite easy to work with since the 1000pt limit is a hard stop. You just gotta decide how you want your team to perform then build them up from there with gear that modifies their given role. I think every one of my various leaders ended up being close combat oriented, lol. But I was reeeeal close to giving the Dire Avenger Exarch 2 shuriken catapults instead a mirror shield/polearm combo. I may still change my mind on that one since it seems more thematic to me and I love themes in my games, damn the gameplay consequences!

Off the top of my head, my scouts were something like:

Sgt - bolt pistol/chainsword
2 snipers with red dots
3 recruits with bolters/bolt pistols

I think I went with another scout instead of a specialist with a heavy bolter and bumped up the kill power and survivability of the guys I have. Bonus is they should look pretty cool once modeled and painted too. I'm also strongly considering magnetizing the different weapons on the scouts for different configurations.

My plan is for the snipers to hang back and cover the advance of my recruits and sgt.

That's cool. I'll actually read the rules and look at the weapon and items at some point. I generally don't go in with any sort of game plan or specialisms in my armies... it really is just what models I like the look of that fit within the points limit! I'm like that on videogames and stuff too, I don't really have the brain for working out that kind of thing. Hence painting and modelling being 95% of my hobby.

Hmm. I never miss a tutorial from Duncan on Warhammer TV... but other than that it's mostly just practice and cheating (such as using a .005 micro architects pen for stuff like pupils and eyelids).

Ehhh

I got krylon last time but it was gloss and I fucked up and it turned me off. Maybe next time.

/tg/ recommended rustoleum so Ima try that out.

Krylon can be pretty strong. You have to be careful when buying and using them.

Thanks, I'll check him out.
I wonder if a sponsored feel funny using tools that he probably won't use in private. Like, I I'm pretty sure most pros don't consider citadel stuff the Pinnacle of quality.

Personally 95% of the tools and paints I use are citadel. I've got plenty of army painter, vallejo, etc too but I prefer using Citadel's stuff. It's not perhaps the best stuff but it's certainly above-average.

Some model kit building circles I visited seemed to look down upon them so I thought most pros don't use them. The fact that you get amazing results with them though shows that it's kinda bull, though.

yeah, there are a number of reasons scale modellers might look down on Citadel paints - some of it is warranted, but that's mostly the same complaints you will see in minis circles (expense, bad pots, etc). A lot of it is snobbery. Some of it is the fact that citadel just doesn't market their paints to modellers, focusing entirely on their own mini games.

Only issue I have ever experienced from Citadel paints is bad pots. A few years ago when they changed out the paint names and dropped a few colors there was some anger in the hobby but eh it is what it is.

I was going through some old boxes and unearthed 10k points of Skaven. I guess that is my next project... FML.

1$ 2oz craft store paint all day, every day for me. I have 12oz bottles of my favorite and most often used colors (3 each of reds/blues/greens, 1ea black, white, stone gray). I got all those on sale for $1.50 ea! I thin and mix my paints anyway, so they're perfect for my useage. Hell, you have to thin citadel and ballejo paints anyway! I do have a selection of picked and chosen paints from several manufacturers for specific purposes though, mainly metallics/inks/washes.

I mix my own inks and make weathering powders from chalk too.

Paint snobs can fuck right off. This hobby has zero to do with brand names or what people believe to be the best. This hobby is about the end product. How each individual decides to get there is irrelevant.

Having said my peace, both vallejo and citadel paints are excellent, although both are overly expensive and laughably tiny IMO.

Note: I hadn't painted much at all for seven or eight years until recently so I may be misremembering or basing thoughts on older paints.

I received the Army Painter mega paint set as a gift and I am just now getting around to using it. The paints aren't as nice as the citadel paints I used to use, maybe not even the PP paints, but they do their job most of the time. Honestly if it wasn't for the pot design citadel paints would probably be my favourite, but instead that honour falls to Vallejo.

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.
Everyone always comes crawling back. GW is a harsh mistress, but a fair one.

At least they've actually been good the last few years! More deals, better pricing, great models and the community engagement is great. Age of Sigmar is a brilliant game. Hopefully they fix 40k because yikes.

Is there a good alternative to GW's texture paints?

They're good, but I imagine how you use them and their cost it's costly-ish to have a good upkeep

Or is there a do it yourself way for that type of paint?

NEO0MJ

I'm sure you can recreate most of them with the right paints and guides. Though personally I only know how to mix metallic paints and marble.

And man, it's taking too long for my package to arrive -_-

If you're using them for basing, a big pot of sand and some PVA glue is the far cheaper option. Just paint over it and drybrush.

However for the crackle paints and the snow effects, it's worth investing in the GW stuff I find. But I only use them rarely.

Hrm. Yeah, I imagine getting sand and then mixing it with the paint is a good alternative.

But I do like the muddy effects and I"ll have to check out the snowy effects but that stuff is something.

Edit: Hmmm I got warplock bronze, but its coming out a bit darker than I'd like. It looks nice though. Hmm.
