Motorstorm Apocalypse Review thread

Just tried the PSN Demo : wow, looks so good.

I'm a huge MSPR fan and my first good impression was about the cleanness of the image : i don't know what AA method they used but definitely much better than MSPR. The game is fluid in all situation.

Motorstorm never felt so good. Big props to Evolution.

I'm not a fan of the demo track either but I'm pretty confident there will be much better on the disc, definite day 1 for me loved MS and PR, especially the online. If that is good I will be spending dozens of hours on this.

dunno if I am just imagining it but you seem more stable in Apocalypse, esp on the bike. Feels way less prone to crashing if you screw up a jump or clip something, but its been ages since I last played PR so may be imagining things. Liked the handling and everything else though, really looking forward to this. Depending on what cuts SCEE made to Evolution in the last few days may be the last Motorstorm we get for a while :(

No, you are right. Moon physics and floatiness are a bit toned down. They were better in PR already and really present in MS1.

good work Evolution

Just because of 3d...mmmh. I wonder what they've could done @720p. :( Whatever.

I found a video of a very good player: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8VgRen2yp8

3:01!!! My best time was like 3:15. Also the Quore Apocalypse video leaked on YT; I don't know if I'm allowed to link it.

EDIT:

You can watch a different track from the retail version here:

The guy whose talking there didn't play a MS before, but he's liking apocalypse.

EDIT2:

Does anyone know if this will have dedicated servers? I really don't want lag in my online play!

No dedicated servers as far as im aware, but Pacific Rift had a great netcode with minmal lag.

Okay, that's slightly reassuring but I think I'll wait for impressions here on GAF before I buy it. I love the music!

Me too, have no idea how people can legitimately say it's the "worst soundtrack ever".

Speaking of the soundtrack, is a full tracklist available yet?

By the way, the game looks AMAZING in the video that was linked above, and in the Qore video. ZOMG.

Those tracks have me excited for the full game. Man, we really got stiffed on the demo. It was quite a boring track imo. :/

We certainly have different benchmarks for "boring". ;)

Wow. Lol. Look at the AI's times. 3:03 for second place. RUBBABANDZ. :P

EDIT:

Damn I love the boost camera effects. It's like it slightly detaches from the car letting you see it bounce around more realistically.

I don't know about you guys but sometimes watching Motorstorm in motion (any of the three games) I get vibes from the incredibly awesome E3 '05 teaser.

Those tracks definitely look better than the demo one.

One thing I don't really like is the new boost meter with the snowflake and fire icon in the middle. I much prefer the one in PR where it would catch on fire, easier to see. Just a nitpick though.

Looks great but I dont expect Sony to launch this in Japan? The postponed the lanuch nin New-Zeland and maybe now in japan?

false - the game has black borders around the image on my 1080p set in scan mode...

It doesnt on mine. Wouldnt the game be outputted in 1080p what ever the native was anyway if you have 1080p selected. Also before the game starts you can tell the game the size of your screen by moving the lines to the edge of your screen.

I would be surprised if it was still being released in Japan, especially with their release date being the 17th. It's far too close to the disasters.

I wonder if they'll delay Yakuza of the End? Seeing as that's out on the same day. Although that's about zombies and not natural disasters.

If I remember right, didn't PR average around 80s in it's reviews? And that turned out to be one of the best racing games on the generation. I feel like reviews almost write Motorstorm games off, because they're not some big racing franchise.

Granted, I haven't touched Apocalypse, but I'm getting the same kind of vibe from reviews as I did with PR.

It really is looking like the demo had the blandest track. I can see why they'd want to hold back so people would be impressed when they get the full retail game, but it still seems like a mistake.

If I hadn't seen these vids on youtube I'd be much more likely to skip the game honestly.

Wow, really? I'm screwed then, I struggle to get below 3:05 in the demo track.

Going by MS2, you practically had to play flawless in the end. Maybe the AI is more forgiving this time. But seeing how close they stay up until the end, and factoring in that they will become more aggressive, I bet it won't be so easy as in early races.

those last tracks shown are more like PR only with all the destruction around. Looks gorgeous. I am hyped again after the disappointing demo.

Going by how well he nails those turns over the subway rails and how he manages to avoid the AI (you need to have feline relexes to avoid to countless crash opportunities the AI creates) I think he, at least, will do fine. I think if you manage to optimize your routes and strategize your boosting like that guy does you can manage to best the AI without getting utterly pwned.

EDIT:

Oh man. good times.

To add to what I said above. This is what, for me, makes Motorstorm the best arcade racer in recent memory; the learning curve. Mastering each track, each route, each type of terrain, taking advantage of the straightaways, each vehicle, and finally topping it off with the aggressiveness of the AI (which is the main cause for debate and bitching). It reminds me of demon's souls in a sense. It feels unforgiving, but it gives you that feeling of pride and accomplishment once you managed to hone your skills well enough to beat it. It reminds you why you're a gamer.

Just checked out the beach side track on one of the links and gotta say I feel the same too.

If that track had been in the demo , it would have blown me away.

Definitely gonna get it now, Day 2!

Nice to see racers expanding into different genres . . . I think there is saturation in the pure racer market. This apocalypse theme should add to it.
