Felt the need to watch a Noir film. Started watching Marlowe (2022) on Amazon. Turned it off after 30 minutes. It was a bore.

Going to try and watch Maltese Falcon for the first time instead. It is on Tubi.

I had the strange idea to watch Porky's last night. I saw it mentioned online a few days ago and hadn't seen it since I was a child which was probably a bad idea in retrospect. But I got curious and wanted to see if it had really aged as badly as people said since I didn't remember anything except glimpses of it.

It was a weird experience to say nothing else. It's obviously dreadful but it still felt like I had just seen an important historical document that I need to tell people about.

I just saw kun fu panda 4 in the theater and it was simply okay. Could have gone straight to netflix. While I did enjoy the film it didn't do anything amazing and I don't really feel like it topped any of the other films.

not related to the movie but while watching a guy was escorted out of the movie by the police. It was annoying, the staff shining the flashlight at me even though the guy was like several rows above me.

Poor Things

I have to say I didn't care for this at all. Started out promising but the movie got stuck in the same gear and it got old quick. Too bad because I like the other films from Lanthimos a lot. Amazing art direction tho, in itself a reason to watch it anyways.

French courtroom film based on the trial of a left wing activist who is accused of murder. I didn't get much out of this, maybe because I was unfamiliar with the guy

Roman Polanski's Chinatown is also a film noir classic, but it was made in the fifties so it's more of an homage.

Argyle was without a doubt the worst movie I will see this year. I'd say it was a complete waste of my time, but I did somehow manage to watch the whole thing in a constant state of "W T F is the shit?" The stellar supporting cast were completely wasted on ChatGPT fanfic level writing and the worst lead actor & actress. Cavill & Jackson were put front and center in ads, but are only in the movie for like maybe 10 minutes of the entire movie if that. Much of the dialog felt AI generated. The CGI in places looked straight out of a Chinese action comedy from 2004. The trailer very much made it look like a much better, funner movie that it turned out to be by quite a lot. The cat is sort of there for no reason other than to throw off buildings or otherwise be abused, so that didn't help either.

Been chipping away at Oppenheimer. Still haven't finished it.

Unfortunately, I can't separate my expectations from the hype on this one, and find myself focusing on how direct and expositional the dialogue is. Not much nuance to it, which is probably a result of its structure (needing to jump from scene-to-scene and make sure you know what's going on quickly.)

Undeniably well-made, but, yeah. Expectations are a double-edged sword.

I watched Chinatown and The Two Jakes a week ago. I honestly preferred The Two Jakes. Out of that list my favorite is undoutedly The Third Man as its cinematography and air of mystique has aged the best. I will say that Touch of Evil is one I watched and felt was overrated due to Orson Welles being in it. Watching it right next to Laura was dissappointing.

*The original looks better in black and white but it is a great scene.

P.S. This list made me realize that I should step up my noir classic watching. Thanks.

Poor Things: great art direction and acting. It's laugh-out-loud funny in parts, too. Promising start, but in the end, it was overlong, and I feel like audiences got "the point" way before the movie did.

Also, the actor on the boat, the one who shows Bella the poor people, was distractingly weak compared to the rest. He brought B-movie side character energy to a movie for which Emma Stone won the Best Actress Oscar. I wonder if he was a friend of or family to one of the producers or something.

I was young teenager when this released. The hype for this movie at the time was like an Avengers movie. Then it bombed. It was the start of the narrative that Kevin Costner directed movies are always too large of a budget, too long, and too bloated.

I don’t remember but I guarantee this was the movie that released between Memorial Day and 4th of July as one of the big summer movies.

the son surviving. Considering the last we saw of him was charging to “help” the military (nonsensical, what difference did he think he was going to make? And I know he has issues with his dad, but he also is just basically abandoning his little sister. Hated his character), and it was clear the military wasn’t accomplishing shit until near the end when the aliens starts succumbing to humanity’s germs that the aliens had zero exposure to, most agreed his odds of survival should have been pretty much zero.

Most people who saw the movie agreed Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning should have survived but not the son. I guess if Cruise’s ex-wife is there at the end, the son being dead would just indicate she’d blame Cruise for it and the movie would end on that uncomfortable note, but in that case make it clear the ex-wife died offscreen at some time during the invasion as well. Could have been a nice bittersweet moment at the end with only Tom and Dakota alive of their family, and while they’re obviously affected by who they lost, they are grateful the world is still humanity’s and Cruise has matured into being a better father for her.

Still a great movie nonetheless.

I'm a fan of a few on your list and recently watched Double Indemnity for the first time. I know it's a classic but what a fucking snoozefest on all fronts for me. I even thought it looked boring which is an achievement in an era where I find most black/white cinematography a thing of beauty to behold as a default.

Also not the film's fault but I've seen Naked Gun entirely too many times for his narration.

Persona is as appealing, beautiful as it is baffling. I can see how incredibly influential this level of weirdness was and I loved it despite not getting the entire last 30 minutes.

Black Girl was very interesting, especially as a cultural and historical document. Beautifully shot and harsh.

Watched Iron Claw, how the fuck is this movie a 7.7 on imdb, are people's expectations that low nowadays? It's not a bad movie but it feels like that the 2nd half of the movie was the director just listing a bunch of tragedies that happened without really getting into it too much. I was quite surprised with this one. I knew of Verhoeven's skills as a storyteller, but I wouldn't have thought I'd like it this much. It must have been difficult and extremely taxing to make, but they made it look effortless on screen. It was a tad too long, I would have cut about 20 minutes, but other than that. I have no real complaints. It's a shame it couldn't fare better at box office back then.
