MS Flight Simulator 2024 |OT| The Sky is Calling

The bigger problem to me was the fact that they literally threw both male and female assets all in one. I cnt chose if I want male or female I have to scroll through the whole thing trying to find male faces or male haircuts because they are all just mushed together without separation from what belongs to who....because I assume a curly bun with hair clip can be male too...

Just a heads up...for me it works now (germany). And on steam are a few UK users for whom it also seems to work now. Seems they fixed the issues over here. Long loading times are gone. Could just finish the first tutorials and proudly obtained my "private pilot license". Its fantastic...when it works! 👍
Aye, UK here, just managed to finally get ingame. I must say, it does actually look a lot better than 20. The lighting on cities at night seems much better. They've also sorted the sound out.

Not bad. Just wish the game was more client side. Not a fan of relying so much on the Internet, at all.

Yeah, I am not a fan as well. The problem was a lot of stuff was saved locally in FS2020 and people complained about loading 200gigs over and over as soon as they patched or updated something. Now they trying it differently (stream basically everything in) to avoid this.

However you still have the rolling cache. I would recommend to set this thing manually on at least 50gb or more. When an area is saved in yr cache...you can jump into that area pretty quick. If its a new area you have to wait a bit till stuff is loaded/saved properly.

I'll give that a go, didn't even know you could set it, nice one

I personally would prefer the loading of 200 gigs but only as my current set up is over WiFi, or having a ten metre cable go from the hub downstairs to up

Which I have done, but the cat keeps pulling it, which in turn pulls the hub down.

It's a bloody nightmare here :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I'll set the cache.

Have you thought of using Power Line adaptors? They work great in my house.

Put simply... they transmit network signals through your existing electrical cabling in your house negating the need for a network cable but affectively giving you a hard wired connection.

I use TP-Link adaptors.
Nice one, I'll have a look into that :messenger_sunglasses:

Anythings got to be better than my crap USB WiFi dungle!

I'm such an amateur, don't know how anything other than trim works. I just love the virtual tourism and randomly dropping into some place on earth, but it can be a borderline horror game. Like flying in over Antarctica in a private jet. I enter cockpit view, intense beeping all over the place. I have no idea what is going on or what any button does but somehow I am the pilot of this plane. Fuel is slowly dropping. I check on my Microsoft middle manager looking co-pilot in the passenger seat. He sits there motionless, gazing over the horizon with his dead empty eyes. He knows it's over. What the hell was he thinking signing up for this job, he knew something was off with the pilot. The money was just too good. He did it for his kids and now he'll never see them again.

Managed to get this working today. It said it remembered me from FS 2020, but it didn't import my controls, so setting up all of that will take many hours.

There are some minor annoyances, such as there no longer being a control to dismiss the ATC communications panel, my brake trigger is not recognised as an axis, and it doesn't like the toggle switches on my throttle.

Skies and lighting look great, ground graphics are poor. Vancouver has trees the size of skyscrapers in the middle of it. The menu interface is straight up nasty. Also, will it ever use the extra 32 GB of RAM I bought specifically for this? Recommended 64 GB, I don't think so.

Top tip: instead of a copilot, select the blank space so you don't have some random wanker sitting next to you. Other tip: change the rolling cache location to another drive before it starts eating your C drive.

Thats strange. For me the game took over neraly all my control settings from 2020. Was quite impressed.

I think it's because I've updated the firmware on my controllers since I last used 2020. Don't know why it won't recognise the brake axis though - it insists it's a button, which makes braking a bit sudden.

You sure you mapped the axis and not a digital brake? For me also the brakes work (left/right separately.....otherwise taxiing would be a pain sometimes)

This gave me a much needed chuckle.

I've played about 100 hours between this and 2020 and I've never landed a plane. 😂

My dumbass can't even figure out how to invert my camera controls on a controller.

Outstanding. Here at the back of my house is a field where I walk my dogs - photo taken last year. A random bit of ground in some unknown part of Scotland.

And beside it is a picture taken in FS2024 this morning when in free look mode as I flew over my house.

I can’t fail but to be impressed!

Sorted it now. I was using the 'scanning' function, which interpreted it as button 31 - the joystick seems to have an axis and a button in a single output there. Using the cog icon instead allowed me to locate the axis manually.

The pedals I'm using at the moment have no toe brakes, so I map both brakes to the pinky lever on the joystick. Makes for easy taxiing in conjunction with the rudder.

Do you have a 2020 shot? That would make a pretty stark comparison I think.

Nah, I don’t. I had to go hunting for my real shot as I couldn’t believe how accurate it looked. I showed the wife the FS2024 pic and she immediately recognised the location (I didn’t tell her it was from a game - held the phone back a bit 😂).

I tried gamepass, and the on ground stuff is certainly cool, amazing visuals when it works. Otherwise I had a terrible experience with the asset streaming stuff. Just absolutely terrible. I really wish I could just download everything out of the box, but I was only able to find a rolling cache size option.

Was thinking about buying it since I just got some new vkb gear but I think I’m skipping for now.

The asset streaming was always a thing - with photogrammetry turned off FS2020 looked pretty mediocre. You literally can't download everything out of the box unless you want a crappy looking game, even a 400GB install of 2020 was still streaming a ton.
That said they should allow the install of plane models and things like that - I haven't had a problem with them and assumed they were part of the install but it seems for others they also don't load in.

I know, but I’m having all types of issues with huge chunks of cities slowly loading in that I never recall happening in 2020. It definitely seems more reliant on your connection speed than 2020 was. Maybe the maps are higher fidelity or something?

A lot of the issues are obviously server side, by day 2 I was hopping from place to place and mode to mode with minimal streaming issues, whereas day one I was flying over green and brown smeared polygons.
The maps are definitely much improved fidelity wise, but I was sad to see that they still haven't fixed construction crane detection - they still have this type of jank going on (this is from 2020 but I saw similar in 2024)

Honestly. MSs quality control has gone down the absolute toilet. What the fuck are they playing at?

I havent tried playing this yet due to the negative feedback but Every big game they are launching is plagues with stupid issues. They should be embarassed and deserve being publicly dragged over the coals for this stuff.

I am so salty over Forza Motorsport and this just proves theyve learnt nothing.

Gob shites.

What's crazy is HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 said this was happening during play test. So they knew this was an issue and just said fuck it and released it anyway. That's even more egregious to me.

That's what a server test is for though so you can figure out breaking point. It seems they just failed to predict how popular the game would be on day one.

Played some more, it looks really promising. It has a ridiculously smooth framerate for a flight sim - I remember being happy when P3D ran anywhere over 20 fps. You don't really need it, but a high framerate feels luxurious.

This has the option to edit controls while you're flying, which is a brilliant feature and is how I've been fixing some of my control issues. You can have the controls menu in a small window or on a second monitor.

On the negative side, though, the auto-gen cities are still atrocious. Went back to Vancouver, in case I just needed to spend more time there to stream the assets, but nope.

I have finally been able to play normally and ....... WOOOOW!, is absolutely insane.

It's not 100% perfect in some details or inconsistencies, but when everything goes well it's amazing.

The performance on XSX is pretty decent, very similar to what FS2020 had at launch and then improved a lot with patches. I hope this one sees the same evolution.

Haven't had any problems after the day 1 cluster fuck, feel bad that others still aren't getting to enjoy it. Still mainly just flying around for the fun of it and admiring the views, but have tried out most of the other modes. It is crazy how much more there is to do in this game. Still need to get my flight stick set-up completely, still only have the basics done.

They actually made the ground look good! This is one of the most incredible achievements in game development history and people are just shitting all over it.

I was skeptical and didn't feel like downloading a 150 gb game. Ended up being 12 on game pass. I was flying around south florida in ten minutes. Amazing.
You know we still have a soft spot for you Phil, right?

It seems like all the problems have finally gone away as I've now had 2 days straight even at peak time with no issues.

This game really notches up the graphics and looks amazing on my PC. It also performs a lot better than MSFS 2020 did, so making it multi-threaded really looks like it's done a world of good for performance.

Of course there are janky bits in the photogrammetry but that's not the simulators fault but rather than data they're using.

Having the ability to get out of your aircraft and go for a walk really adds another dimension. The fact that when you're walking around it doesn't look like an absolute turd but actually quite believable is such a massive achievement. Just having a fully realised world which you can walk / fly around is insane.

I was having a few remaining issues with my identity which fortunately sorted themselves out yesterday evening. This allowed me to start playing Career mode and it's great fun. Given how close these aircraft are to their actual real-world counterparts, I would say I now happily start and maybe fly a real Cessna 172 with all the dials and knobs :messenger_beaming:. The checklist (although you can skip it) really adds to the immersion of doing things by the book.

I've passed my private pilots license now and am able to start with the missions. It is addicting playing it and wanting to keep progressing on with learning the next type and passing more license types.

So far, ignoring the initial disaster of launch, this has really impressed me. It keeps pulling me back which FS 2020 never did aside from being an occasional digital tourist.

I haven't even done any of the challenges or photography stuff yet. I'm really looking forward to making more progress and will post some nice pics when I get a chance.

Agree with all of this, and I’m at a similar place.

The career mode really helps maintain the interest and was needed to help bridge the gap between sim and game to pull in the casuals.

I’m torn between using the cockpit view and external view. It’s a lot easier to see what is happening with the external view (and the HUD is so much easier to read than the instruments) but it kind of feels like I’m not as involved as I should be.

It was a pity about the broken launch, but it was only a 24 got delay for me and I can accept that. It wasn’t the first game to be plagued with server issues on day 1, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Having to divide my time between this, Stalker 2 and COD MP at the moment. What a strange mix of games 😂

Started my own company yesterday, light transportation or whatever it is, not sightseeing. And one mission is about 70k, where you fly for an hour or two. I tried to skip som legs, taxing, the cruise leg and just go for the landing and then skip to parking. Took about 10 mins and neted about 30k. So one can earn ok credits by not playing. Dont know where the fun is then, but its possible.

I only have one Microsoft account yet every time I load this game up on PC I get the Let's Get You Signed In window and have to click Sign In then click on my only Microsoft account then finally click on Let's Begin before the game will even load. What's worse is that I am using the controller and this part cannot be completed with a controller as it requires the mouse.

Why is this even required? Other games from Microsoft only require me to sign in the first time I load them up then automatically sign in thereafter.

Doesnt do this for me on gamepass.

Well, did my first mission after getting my licence - taking a daughter and her dad up for a sight seeing tour that included the town he grew up in.

Actually felt nervous as they got on the plane with me (they are actually there!).

Everything went brilliantly until the landing. Lined up perfectly, touched down perfectly. Only too fast. And I forgot to power down the engine.

I could only watch in horror as - despite foot down on the brake - my Cesna did not slow down and raced off the edge of the runway, ploughing head first into a tree.

Oopsie? 😂

Had nearly exact the same "incident" today. Very short grass airway....I am coming in with my usual overspeed of 80-90 knots ;)....realizing on the airway that this was maybe a bit too fast for the brakes. Ooopsie! :D Thank god the game is quite lenient with it. I guess in real life my career would have been over now. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It's not the most in-depth and dedicated comparison, but it shows the clear improvement in graphics and increased level of detail.

Then you have to add the increase in game modes, tests of all kinds, new types of aircraft and the career mode. It's a shame that the first few days of launch were infertile, I hope that as the days go by people will be able to enjoy it and appreciate the tremendous work of ASOBO.

It is amazing how they managed to improve what was already best looking game this gen.

I have comepletly opposite on Series X.
While ground and foliage is clear step up, the cities never load high LOD buildings.
New York is like 2 gens behind 2020. It also seems to have worse HDR and clouds than previous game.

Microsoft should be ashamed over the mess the game was launched it and this is corp that likes to tell us the wonders of cloud

But I must say now that I can blame it (after 4 days of trying)
It looks utterly amazing flying over the oil rigs you could swear you're watching a TV broadcast

This has really surprised me with how good the career is. I've almost finished the IFR training and it's like going through aircraft university. I've learned so much and this is a brilliant way to get people interested in aviation and potentially wanting to be a real pilot. They've said this was their intention and they really have done a great job at all it.

It's not all been perfect for me though as some of the IFR training has been a janky as even though I follow all of the nav points perfectly, it says I need improvement and rate me a C which is bizarre.

It is very addictive though. I've got some family over this weekend and I'm struggling to keep away from my PC to play it :messenger_beaming:
