NBC Cancels Hannibal after 3 Seasons. Show will now be shopped around at other venues

Hey, look at it this way: Fuller has managed to salvage a large amount of "Hannibal" from the shitheap (pretty damned miraculous, really), and we still have a full 5-6 hour adaptation of "Red Dragon" coming.

I've always considered "Silence" to basically be sort of a rehash/remix of "Red Dragon" anyway, so not taking another run at it doesn't bother me too much.

So in 3 seasons, we've gotten, so far as I'm concerned:

The best Hannibal Lecter
The best Will Graham
The best Jack Crawford
The best Frederick Chilton
The best Freddie Lounds
The best Mason Verger

So I mean... even if we get a Francis Dolarhyde that isn't as good as Tom Noonan's, or a Reba that's not as good as Joan Allen, we've still gotten a large number of fairly amazing characters that play better than Thomas Harris made them play, which is saying something.

This was never going to run forever, and even if money and ratings weren't a factor, it probably wouldn't be a good thing to have it run for another 30-40 episodes, anyway.

The story of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter ending with Red Dragon works just fine, for me.

More like WOAT Will Graham and second best hannibal

Certainly best mason verger tho, gary oldman had a huge influence on the character but still it was really fun to see mason pre-mutilation

Also PSH was a better Lounds than that chick in the show, tho he was in a pretty weak film

Yep. I really hope the show is resurrected on another platform though. I'd like to see Fuller's plan for Season 4, at least.

Agreed. This show is the definitive version of pretty much everything as far as im concerned. Cant wait to see their Dolarhyde.

edit: LOL @ woat Graham. Best Graham by a light year.

Honestly...? I'm not worried. Hannibal is such a differently handled show that if there's extra time between season 3 and 4, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Legally, of course, the actors can't be told they have to stick around for something that may start this fall or next fall, so they have to release them. The fact that Bryan has been giving so many interviews and teasing so much about the show makes me think there's something going on we're not privy to.

...I'm not giving up hope on this one. Not until they say that it's over for sure :(

Best Will Graham? How about my favorite character on TV ever. Yeah.

If this is the end, then so be it. The only book/movie that will remain untouched for the show is Silence of the Lambs, which is damn good enough as is anyway. If all we get is three years of original material + a better adaptation of Red Dragon (and seems like pieces of Hannibal and Rising thrown in here and there), then I'm pretty satisfied with that. I just hope the finale this year delivers good enough closure.

Uhh. So how hopeless does that make someone picking the show up now?

If it's that stupid Amazon streaming exclusivity deal that's preventing Netflix from getting it I'll never forgive Amazon!

Unless Amazon itself picks it up, that'd be fine. But if they don't have any interest in it it looks like it's the reason it's being held up.

Man, that's incredibly disappointing. The show was doing well overseas, right? I realize that a U.S. distribution was needed, but the series was doing fine in ratings in say Europe, wasn't it?

Going by reading all the details about the show's distribution, I'm getting the impression that Amazon's exclusivity deal did a lot to tank Hannibal's future elsewhere? As in no other network, like say Netflix or Yahoo, could do anything because of Amazon's deal.

Yeah, that really would suck if Netflix was showing interest but they couldn't get passed Amazon

Stupid Gaumont and their decisions.

It should show up on Netflix and suddenly have "fuck" bombs thirty times an episode after three seasons of clean talk, like The Killing.

This last episode was the first time I actually thought a character was gonna curse/get bleeped. It almost never occurs to me that there's no profanity on the show at all.

this is like Constantine. once it was announced as cancelled. I made my peace already, but people kept hoping.

just accept it Hannibal GAF

That's a shame it's not going all the way. I thought it would be a sure fire pick up from another channel/service but I didn't even consider the obvious case of there being a big demand for the lead actors from other projects

I heard that Fishburne's already got something else he's moving onto as well?
He already had something else with Blackish.

The shooting schedule thus far has allowed them to split their time. Raul Esparza is also a regular on SVU, and Gillian Anderson has her series.

I don't really see how the cast could have been retained without a deal in place, so it doesn't really seem like anything's changed really. Sure, the cast are now free to take better offers if they get them, but it's not like this has happened because the producers have given up on finding a deal, and getting a deal this quickly was always going to be unlikely.

Will continue to be optimistic. Would rather they take the time to find the best deal and format for whatever comes beyond season three, and this may allow for that.

I was hoping the show would make it to SotL, but even then that was optimistic at best. At least we got 3 beautifully disturbing seasons from Bryan Fuller's madness.

I just hope someone, someday eventually picks up the show :(

Until the Producer's confirm its demise, I'm still holding out hope. I think they could get every back for a shortened season considering how fast they anyway. It would be cool if someone licensed the SotL and promoted it as a big event deal. 6 part series or whatever. Even a 2 hour special would be lovely. People still reference SotL, so there is definitely a way to exploit that.

I know. I mean something else ON TOP of the something else he's already got with Blackish.

The comic-con panel next week is gonna be interesting.

It's either gonna be a celebratory affair with an announcement of being picked up for another season, or a sad farewell panel.
