1. What is your budget?
about 800 usd

2. Main purpose of the camera?
Night time pics of downtown(Miami), darker pictures in general with a focus on unnatural lights.

3. What form factor is most appealing to you?
I'm leaning towards point and shoot, want to keep it light.

4. Will you be investing in the camera? (buying more stuff for it later)
Not sure, sort of want something that's ready to go and can use for a while.

5. Any cameras you've used before or liked?
Couple of my friends have high end DSLRs I've used for fun but dont know the models.

The ricoh gr II seems budget friendly.

I hope I'm posting in the right place and that someone can help me :)
I just bought a Canon EOS 6D for me and a PowerShot G5 X for my SO. He's completely green and I'm not really that well-versed in the way of photography either, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of good guides to these two cameras. Nothing about general photography, I need something about the actual camera models with their features and settings.
There was a suberp guide somewhere for my last camera that explained every setting, knob and button on the thing in a "for dummies" way without sounding like it thought the reader was completely stupid (can't find it now tho). Is there anything like that out there for these models?

Man I wish I'd have seen this thread before purchasing.

My Rebel xt finally died just a week ago, and I had agreed to do some company profile pics with my setup, so I was in a panic. Went to Best Buy since I needed something same-day, and for lens/accessory compatibility, I picked up a Rebel T5i + an IS 18-55 lens (my previous 18-55 was not IS) on sale for 649.99.

Now I used to work for Ritz Camera back in the day, but it's been a number of years since I entertained the idea of buying a new camera body. How did I do? Would I have been smarter to buy the T6?

I didn't really want to drop 1400 for the 6D, so I figured this was a nice mid-point. It's a huge upgrade in AF zones, ISO, FPS, metering, etc from my xt, so I feel like it will serve it's purpose. I just hope nobody has any bad news that I screwed up hard by not buying the latest low end model.

Probably should've bought a 70D. I'm not the biggest fan of the Rebel line up. Yep...looked online and found a refurbished 70D for about 730 from Canon.

Hmm, did a quick feature comparison, it looks like it has a few one-ups over the T5i -

- Better sensor
- More zones and more dynamic AF
- WiFi
- 2 FPS faster in burst mode.

To be honest, none of that is really a deal breaker for me, since I've long stopped doing photography for money. I do agree though that if I'd have seen the refurb for 730 and could have gotten it same-day, that's a better use of the money.

Yeah it mainly just depends on what you need it for and how often you're going to shoot. I do too much for a Rebel series, but if it suits your needs then it's the best camera for you.

That's interesting. It's like that Lytro technology. I wonder how flexible it will be. The rumor is $3,200 body-only in the US. Hopefully Canon doesn't see this as some insane feature and jack up the price.

If this has the post-focus capability of a Lytro along with the image quality and cheap price (relatively speaking) of the 5D, then that is fucking mind blowing.

Canon 5D IV ahoy!

http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-announces-the-eos-5d-mark-iv-dslr/

I had the original and then the mark II and skipped mkIII.

I think I'm just going to buy a new lens now and wait til the price drops on the 5D4 in 6-12 months and then evaluate a buy.

Dynamic range improvements, better video, better autofocus, more megapixels, better ISO performance compared to my 8 year old camera... it IS tempting to pre-order...

edit:
First impressions... https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-5d-mark-iv-first-impressions-review

edit x2: Best Buy has 24 month no interest finance and I have a Best Buy card... trigger may be pulled in the morning...

A Mark IV already? Damn, I'll never have the funds for that one. I bought a Canon 60D once but gave it away to a family member, so I'm looking to get a new one. I would like to stay with Canon, but want something slightly better than the 60D. Maybe I should take a look at the 80D?

A new camera with the same specs as a Nikon d810 and £2k more for it. Why not!

....disappointed.

thanks for the informative post and explaining what you mean?

Dunno if you are talking about the price (it will probably be $300+ less if I wait a year) or some Nikon/Canon fanboy stuff? I have all Canon lenses so I'm not going to change systems. This body could probably last me 10+ years as a professional photographer.

Nice to see Canon is trying to innovate, they've been too complacent for too long. competitions ftw.

Canon has been behind for years in dynamic range but from what I'm reading the 80D and 1D X II (released early 2016) have basically been a comeback for them in sensor tech. That bodes well for the 5D4. I'm interested to see how flexible/useful this Dual Pixel AF system is.

5D mark IV is nice and all, but the new Fuji camera finally has a Bayer layout :D

Hopefully this is a sign Fuji is giving up on the X-trans. I've always ruled them out after seeing the effects on subtle details, especially foliage. Differences for the most part where not gigantic, but on certain patterns X-trans could stumble while Bayer was much more consistent.

ha yea... I looked at your post history and you do video? I guess shooting 4K is in a crop mode and some people aren't happy with the codec Canon is using?

I'm mainly a photographer but I've done a handful of freelance video jobs over the years. I'm thinking for my needs the photo side is a big improvement over my 9 year old 5D2 and any video improvements are just icing on the cake for me. I expect I'd be shooting in 1080p the vast majority of the time anyways.

I pulled the trigger and pre-ordered.

Yeah for video it looks to be horrible, but they probably had their reasoning. This is definitely a stills camera first, but even then - from the 5D3 it's not a huge jump. Good on you for pre-ordering, I hope it does you wonders. Did you order it with one of the new lenses?

I did not.

I'm planning on getting a 135L though for portraits. I've been using a Sigma 50mm prime and Canon 17-40L as my only lenses for 10+ years now. Will be refreshing to get a new body and lens to work with. I'm EXCITE.

100mm-135mm on FF is such a fun focal length for portraiture. The thin DOF and perspective allows for very painterly renditions.

i have the nikon 135mm f2 "defocus control" and its fantastic. I recently got the newest 300mm f4 and its also fantastic for portraits. Telephotos4life

It's not even about 1080p versus 4k

The codec is a laughable piece of shit codec. MJPEG? Only 8bit and 4:2:2? C'mon, Canon. It's not that hard to put better specs in it. I know its a stills first cam and they don't want to canibalize with the C100 series but other companies are eating their lunch.

It's like PS3 era Sony. Canon gave birth to the DSLR video scene but won't do shit about it.

So many young people in the videography field (myself included) got their start with Canon. Either the 5d or the T2i or whatever. Its just disappointing for them to turn a blind eye to the competition.

I do so many shots with my 70.-200 now. Granted I'm on crop sensor so it's 105-300, but it's so good at portraits. Though I have a funny feeling my bokeh would look way different on a full frame camera.

Canon pushing that video tech upmarket towards the 1DXmII :(

I'm surprised no one here is talking about the storage bandwidth this thing has. No CFast, no newer SD cards and apparently the buffer can only handle 21 RAW shots. AKA: 3 seconds in burst mode. The video shit might be business as usual but the lack of CFast in a camera like this is A S T O U N D I N G.

I really want underwater housing for my d750

I really do not want to spend $1500 and think I'll just keep taking pictures of the morning ocean waves with my GoPro instead.

But yeah I want that housing.

Canon elaborates on what Dual Pixel RAW is.

That said, there definitely can be potential benefits to critical users. Portrait and people photography is one obvious example, with the Image Microadjustment feature. You certainly won’t be able to make major shifts in the plane of sharpest focus — such as from a subject’s ears to his/her eyes in a typical head shot — but in situations where the sharpest eye is just a tad “off,” Image Microadjustment may provide just that little nudge forward or backward that you’re looking for. Similarly, the Bokeh Shift may be useful for making slight changes in what appears immediately in front of or behind a portrait (or any other) subject… in some instances, potentially shifting intruding out-of-focus foreground matter enough to get a clearer view of a main subject you’ve focused upon.
Sounds badass, but dauym that filesize.

If a person could find one cheap enough would a D700 still be considered a good camera for indoor event photography?

Yes. That camera is amazing. Still is. When Nikon first brought out the D3 and the D700 (same sensor), that was the first huge step up in low light, high ISO photos with less noise. Made me switch to Nikon.

Only thing being it's hard to find a well taken care of one on Ebay. Does this thing handle low light better than my 7100? I'm honestly trying to find one in the $500 range.

Yeah, I'm kinda disappointed by what the 5D4 is missing after a 5 year wait. It's pretty obvious that Canon is intentionally crippling its video capabilities in order to push people upmarket. That really sucks. Especially since it was the 5DMarkII the put DSLRs on the map for video production.

I dunno, I never used a D7100 before, but I'm sure you'd be able to find comparisons online. That camera's only 3 years old, so I would think the sensor tech in there is pretty good already.

The main reason to find a cheap D700 would be for the full frame. My initial hunch would be that at web resolutions, the performance of both cameras should be about the same in regards to noise.

Looking at DPReviews comparison tool the D7100 is a little noisier but does have a significant resolution advantage over the D700. If you already have a D7100 then maybe you should consider getting a full-frame fast prime lens to capture more light? (full frame lens for future upgradeability)
50mm F/1.4 or a 85mm F/1.8

I run around with a 2.8 17-50, 1.8 18-35, 1.8 50mm and a 2.8 70-200. I do a lot of indoors event photography and I usually need reach. which the primes outside of the 85 really doesn't give me. I'm inquiring about the 700 for spare body and less high iso noise reasons and cause it's full frame. My next lens is the Tamron 2.8 24-70. I also usually do my best not to shoot at 1.8 cause the DOF is fucking wonky on those damn things for me. They let in more light but it just increases the chance of what I'm shooting not even being in focus depending on the distance.

Been waiting for the Sigma 135 Art forever. I have an 85 that I love but it definitely seems more useful when I had a crop body.

That's because that 85 pretty much was a 135 on your crop body. I'm personally waiting for Sigma to do a stabilized 2.8 24-70. Why they haven't yet is fucking beyond me since that lens is a staple in every event shooters camera bag.

135mm is a great focal range for portraits. I have the Zeiss 135mm and it still blows me away.

what body do you have? I guess these don't have autofocus?

He's got a 5d MkIII, they're manual focus lenses, like every Zeiss is manual focus if I'm not mistaken.

Apparently the auto-focus on 5DIV video is actual useable. Not sure how much of this is marketing fluff but could be interesting.
I primarily use manual focus for video, but I'll use the auto-focus on my 1DX mkII occasionally and it's mostly good. There are specific instances, like if I'm recording 1080/120 and a player is walking toward me I'll quickly tap on him on the LCD and only worry about my focal length, let him walk past me and then follow. It sometimes tries searching when both me and the subject are moving, but more often than not it keeps the subject sharply focused.

I'm happy I jumped on the 1DX mkII train when I did, though. Friends kept telling me to wait for this announcement because of the rumors and now everyone is mostly let down (with the video side). The clients love the look of the 1DX, the framerates, the 4k, and after 3½ months it's paid for itself. I don't think the 5D4 is a big enough leap to trade out my 5D3, I think I'll stay with my combo.

how does the video of 5D4 compare with 1DX mkII? The 5D4 uses 1.74 crop on 4K video... does that mean if I use a 17mm lens it will really be like using ~30mm lens (17 x 1.74 = 29.58mm)?

also, not sure if I'm following this article correctly, but it seems to say 1080p on the 1DX is pretty average: https://www.cinema5d.com/canon-1d-x-mark-ii-vs-canon-1d-c-which-one-shoots-better-video/

when you shoot video on the 1DX, do you always use 4K and then export at 1080p if that's all that is needed? Or would you use 1080p in camera for a project that only needs a 1080p file?

edit: Looks like the 1DX2 4K crop is 1.3x.

edit 2: I realize Vince Laforet is probably on Canon's payroll, but he had this to say... "It’s definitely the best combination of Still + Video camera I’ve used to date."

I am WET for this camera.

I'm not a video guy, buuuuuttttt

As I understand it, unless it limits you somehow (storage space, features, framerate, overheating), you want to shoot at 4K even if you're outputting to 1080p, because it allows you to do more in post. Some examples were cropping for a "different" focal length instantly for an appearance of a new cut, using it to zoom in, repositioning frame, etc, all while still having a 1080p source.

Also as I understand it, the Sony cameras absolutely *destroy* in video, in not having to crop, full sensor read out, focus peaking for MF, and IIRC I think they save in better formats? So I don't really get the comment about it being the BEST for photo/video, unless he's sipping some kool aid (or specifically referring to within Canon or he just REALLY hates mirrorless). But again, not really a video guy so I don't pay too much attention, this is mainly stuff I've heard in general purpose reviews.
