Can anybody recommend a good beginner photography book? I just got a D3300 for my bday after years of longing for getting into photography! Unfortunately, I know nothing about the basics or techniques.

I have the 85 1.8. It's great. Note that Sigma is going to drop their 85 Art soon, so hold off and see how that's priced.

I don't think I'm going to wait... I really want an 85 for a shoot I have this weekend so I think I'm going to bite. The Sigma might not be out for months and will probably cost a few hundred more. I have some reward certificates after buying my 5DIV and can get the Tamron for $585.

I do LOVE my Sigma (non-ART) 50mm f1.4 though... nothing against Sigma.

Man, I don't think Olympus has ever given me good enough reason to consider switching to them, but to me their cameras are still what I think of when someone says "camera" to me. They look so classic.

They definitely style their bodies after film SLRs from the 70s. Lots of similarities to my old ass Canon A1.

Lots of interesting stuff dropping today.

Good recommendation. I got the same camera a few months ago, nelchaar, because I like taking photos but was tired of just using my phone. Been teaching myself with this book.

I think I read that the new Tamrons have a good amount of chromatic aberration or something, but Lightroom fixes that easy enough. The 85 also has stabilization, which is pretty rare in prime lenses.

What do people use medium format for? I know I've seen advertising photographers using it, but I would assume with how heavy it is it's a studio thing. I think I've seen some hipsters or something carrying around old style full formats or something once. That's...that's not my thing.

Mainly detail, i shoot a a lot of deadpan or topographic stuff and the format is perfectly suited for that. Also the size of the negative, and with wet printing give medium format images a stunning clarity and a certain look. As for large format :D. I guess , it is about the depth of the image, clarity, detail, and colour.

I guess there is a theory side related to shooting Medium format as well. Topography for example is about creating photographic essays about objects/buildings. So if you produce a series on water towers for example (See Bernd And Hilla Becher), and you really start to look at the images, the similarities and differences between each water tower, that detail is crucial. I had the chance to see a Edward Burtynsky exhibition, he shoots on large format , and seeing these massive prints ( probably metre isn size) and how clear the minute details were, was quite simply breath taking. If you take some time to look at his images - i hope you do, they are worth it, i think you will start to get an idea. Other photographers for large format i would recommend are Mark Power , and Andreas Gursky ( sort of a running joke in photographic circles, i think people hate him because of how popular and recognised he is, (and how big his prints are too :) - up to 3 meters + in size ). Then you have people like Martin parr who utilise the extra detail you see in medium format to make some seriously unflattering images, that kind of show a revealing truth about life , or Joel Meyerowitz who's captures of New York just breathe and exist in print.

Then again, you have people like William Eggleston, who shot with 35mm (amongst other formats admiteddly) who just make amazing images, that feed purely of instinct and rely on the emotion of the image.

I've been trying to move away from Medium Format though, it is just too expensive for me at the moment. If i was still at uni, or lived close to a public darkroom i would definitely still be shooting with it, but i am having a hard time with scanning. And it's expensive.

I would say, if you get the chance to shoot with it, it is a great learning tool. When you produce roll upon roll of perfectly exposed negatives, that feels great. Also i found the process of shooting MF really enjoyable. It is hands on, industrial, tactile, mechanical. Using a RB6X7, the whole looking down into the camera, focusing, removing the slider, clicking the shutter release, pushing down on the negative roll lever, combined with printing it was really rewarding. It is a very cool process.

Saying that, with sensors reaching 24 mp as standard, i think the gap in detail is very much almost negligible now.

This is a very good blog post that made me less anal about medium format photography and try to be more liberal and democratic shooting photographs.

Perfect, thanks guys! Book bought! Pretty excited! I've been messing around with the camera and have taken some decent shots already, but I've been pretty clueless about what I've been doing so far. This book will go a long way!

GF lenses can resolve over 100MP
i wish people would stop with this nonsense. I used an old Mamiya 55mm f2.8 with a Phase One IQ 180, it had zero problems resolving 80mpx.

I'm so confused. Apparently the A99 II is a thing? Not complaining if this means A99 (and A900) prices come down.

And so undefined. Does it resolve 100MP perfectly sharp in the corners while wide open?

I think someone played around with MTF data of the 50mm Otus and figured out it could benefit from 1-200MP sensors so I guess you could say it can resolve 200MP :p

New Sigma 12-24mm FX lens. Yes please. Amazingly wide with little distortion. If anybody has used the older version on FX or 35mm like I have will appreciate what Sigma has accomplished. https://www.dpreview.com/news/5823614167/sigma-adds-lenses-to-its-global-vision-line

Looks like the new Fuji and Pentax 645z are the same size sensor: 44x33mm. Both again much smaller than 645 "full frame" (56x42mm). I think the Pentax lenses will work with 645 film size, but will the Fuji's?

Was messing around with an XT1 at B&H. I like it, once it was explained how to use it, interface is different from what I'm used to but they're nice as heck. Just would need to learn how to change AF points.

Is that...

A screw-on tripod socket grip? That image doesn't tell me much without a view of the other end.

Ahh crap sorry lol. I'm tired!
It's something that you thread on to your camera/whatever and it can be held by a mic stand. It's esentially a grip. I want to get one, but thought that it can't be that much, just have to identify the name of this dang thing haha

I don't really follow Sony... why is this confusing?

Sigma 85mm Art announced. $1,200. I'm going with the Tamron 85 mm.
Sony have been ramping down A mount and shifting over to E mount. There has been so little released for A mount a lot of people thought Sony had internally discontinued it.

Probably going to purchase this too

Any recommendation for a micro sd card case? Waterproof might be nice, I'm currently looking at the pelican one.

Go for the pelican, it's honestly the best one out there. There's also the Ruggard one, both are very similar but the pelican feels easier to remove cards and isn't too hard on the locking slider of sd cards

i dont think i can do MFT again. i like my GH4 but that crop is fucking awful without a speedbooster. my 18-35 art is fantastic but its still do long for most my uses.

I can't imagine my 18-35 being a 36-70 1.8. That's actually very useful for event photography, but video work it's got to be too tight. I was thinking MFT briefly, but once I got used to how Fuji's operate I like them a lot.
Meanwhile at Nikon......
Seriously? Action Cameras? for $499?
This was me after I found out they announced jack shit at Photokina:

I've been waiting weeks scouring Nikon Rumors for something and there was just nothing.

what do you currently use and what are you looking forward to?
Nikon D7100 and soon to be a Nikon D600 as well. I was looking forward to either an update to the D750 or D610 lines. I know they just released the D5 and D500, but I'm never touching anything in the D5 category and the D500 is a great camera yes, but I wanted something that would be an improvement in the non sport oriented FX line.

Haha, i know what you mean by waiting. I've been waiting on a D810 upgrade. To be honest, the 750 and D810 are great cameras already, They're only two years old and will be hard to improve on other than minute details. I'd say we both go for them. But we will both wait haha.

Infactt, the D700, D750, and 810 i would say are ahead of their time.

I actually would have gotten a used D700, but for the conditions people sell them in I just switched to a D600. Used D700's just look horrible at anything near an affordable price and at least with the D600 I don't take a serious hit in MP.

I think that's the best choice. The D700 probably retains a premium for being such a high end camera when new and rare, but its sensor is a little dated by today's standards and the D600 has better high ISO and DR.

Same weird price premium with the Sony A850/A900 (same age and the very first full frame digital A-mount). That sensor was 25MP, but has surprisingly bad high ISO performance (raw files were a mess at 1600) and no live view. Despite that used prices are in 5D mark ii/D700 range.

Nice to know I wasn't a mad man for choosing a D600. That and having to get a CF card aND reader would've been annoying.

Am I the only one excited for Kai and Lok's reunion at Photokina?? I hope it's not short lived lol.

Anyway, remember my griping this weekend? Looks like destiny hangs out in GAF. I got contacted for an interview around Sunday evening, showed up Monday, did the interview and they offered me the gig a few hours later. Today was my first day and it's fantastic... I want to keep in the wraps for now since I haven't done paperwork yet but I will say this...

I have a new found appreciation for the kit lens and auto mode due to it's efficiency lol.

I can barely survive an entire DigitalRev video these days, but congrats on the gig.

Got out and took some photos today and I had a ton of fun learning and messing with settings. I was told that's there's a way to mimic the fish eye effect with the custom creative features on the t5i? Is this true? Does anyone have any knowledge or experience about this?

There's literally like some kind of photo show every few months anyway. But I think most players are not tying their announcements for these shows any more. Almost everyone seems to have scaled way back this year as well in terms of booth presence from the reports.

I mean I get it, but everybody seemed to have something prepped of some sort for the show. Canon announced and shipped the 5DIV right before the show, oh yeah they also had the EOS M5, Fuji had the XT2 coming out right before the show and they announced the MF camera. Olympus and Panasonic announced their new M43 line up. Nikon had nothing except GoPro cameras and the last thing they announced was a 3400, which I don't think anybody actually interested in Photokina really care about.

Leica has an instant camera and their hall is completely empty. I'm not sure why since they still have the space. Sony has A99II -- surprising announcement but doesn't matter to 99% of people; instead, a more DSLR like FE mount A9 with larger buffers, dual SD cards, faster SD card write outs would have mattered to larger audiences. Pentax has... a firmware update since they had a busy year. If nothing's announced at Photokina, there's CES, CP+ etc etc.
