Well, it's not like Bioware is known for solid framerates, so excuse me while I remain sceptical.

It sounds like Mass Effect is running now the way KotOR was running when it shipped.

Looks weird...I have never been into this kind of atmospheres, so I hope this one alters my perception ! Textures are REAL good by the way...

While I'm still very impressed by visuals and i love Bioware, i'm a bit anxious about too much FPSish gameplay that you can see from videos. I hope the game will have a pause or smth. :p

Luke mentioned Full Spectrum Warrior. I hope it plays like that instead of like a traditional rpg. I hate that type of gameplay.

What's all this talk about the "uncanny valley" effect on the characters? Are they really lifeless? Is there any chance they'll add the reflections back into the eyes? Do the eye pupils move at all?

From that post by BioWare it sounds like if anything was wrong with the eyes it was just because of a crap build.

In the E3 build and X06 builds, the eyes had a particularly "liquid" look to them, those watery reflections you see in real people's eyes. That dude from BioWare can post about it on their forums, but I, John and a bunch of folks all noticed that they (the eyes) looked different. It is a SUPREMELY minor complaint and a total nitpick -- like I said, Kotor ran like dog balls, but I still loved that game, and this game is running better now than Kotor was when it shipped.

The X06 trailer showed the player pausing the battle to examine the combat field and issue commands, and also switching characters (like you would in KotOR) so yeah, I assume it's more of an Action RPG than a straight-out FPS.

Got chance to read both IGN's & 1up's previews. The game seems to be shaping up very nicely. Although, to anyone wanting to read IGN's preview, if you don't want to know anything of what happens in the first hour don't read their first page. I really like the fact that it's open to various play styles. So I can approach it like a Sci-Fi Rainbow Six game and never pause the action but someone else could pause the action and take a more SRPG approach. :D

Ok, we've seen the screenshots. We've seen it in motion. We've heard gaming journalists gush over it. Everyone seems to agree that it looks amazing, has a promising gameplay style, and has a thorough plot (with novels and all).

Now, for the part that seriously irritates me. When the game drops, one of these journalist from the glowing previews will suddenly find x amount of things to complain about in the final product and stick the game with a seven-point-something, when all of the flaws mentioned were already present in the preview builds. Why does this happen so often? It happened with Lost Planet. It's happening with Motostorm.

I applaud Luke for mentioning the bit about the eyes and the state of the game at this time. So, if we see a big 7.5 on the review page at 1up when it drops, we'll know what happened before we ever read ther review. And, it's unfortunate that so many people are seeing the "uncanny valley" issue, yet Bioware says that nothing is wrong. Now, Luke did say it was minor and it probably won't hurt the game for most people. But, if ME does indeed lack the emotion that the Doctors want it to convey, then they can't say they weren't warned.

p.s. - can't wait to stop talking about it and actually play this monster...

Described as a "next-gen BioWare game on steroids" by BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka, Mass Effect is all but finished save some polishing and optimization. Though Microsoft remains mum on an official ship date, it seems likely that Mass Effect will arrive before Blue Dragon's August release. The build shown off was not a demo, but the full game in its current progress. And it looks like it's not far from final code.

The best part about the advent of blogs and this kind of community games journalism is that game scores REALLY don't matter anymore. There is a kind of transparency that allows you instead to have figured out whose individual opinion you value most, and see what they think about the game.

****!

****!!!

I almost passed this off as the old thread being bumped - how in the world could I have been so late! Damn it!

Those shots look gorgeous as always - that lizard's skin looks pretty sweet as well... the alien chick's "netting panties" are interesting... :)

Oh, Luke's report is already up, nice...

I'm going to go on media lockdown soon for this. Atleast impressions lockdown. After having Kotor semi-spoiled for me (statements of "OHHH there is a twist that you'll NEVER EVER see coming"...guess what...I did after that), I'll look at screenshots cuz realistically I don't think I'll be able to not look at them, but impressions are easier to avoid, and I think I will do that.

As with most RPGs, the story is the single most important thing to me in this game. The gameplay mechanics and graphics come up after that, and I don't want the story spoiled. I'll probably go on lockdown about a month before it releases.

The screens look fantastic but I can't help but notice how detailed the characters are in comparison to the ground textures :-/

I'm not sure when BioWare released a bad game. Can anyone point me to when they released a bad game? I ask, because man....it must've been a long time now. The more I see shots of games like this, the more I want this game. :lol

Anywho, good stuff. Good stuff!

Gears was still pretty stuttery at X06 in October, ahead of the November release, and it turned out pretty well. If they are indeed focusing on optimization then I'm not too worried.

This is exactly how to think of Mass effect in its current state. I wish I'd thought to include that in the Preview. More people would've understood that.

Jade empire was bad? Geez...last gen must have been downright brutal to you.
Why? I thought Jade Empire was a horrible game with shallow repetitive combat and a lackluster story. Which was extremely disapppointing since I love all of Bioware's other works.

Uh oh, but Gears stutters like a madman in cut scenes! Dun dun duuunnn...

I have faith, especially since Bioware claims this wasn't a touched up build at all, and with you saying it's as good now as Knights was shipped.

So, yeah, where's this video?

Certainly one could argue that Jade Empire paled in comparison to their previous games, but was it really a bad game? Judging the game on its own merits, it's at worst an average game, IMO.

Let's not get carried away here...

If you like unbelievably cliched, dorky and overblown Sci Fi bollox set in a 'let's rip off Syd Mead-and-hope-no-one-notices' universe with badly animated characters delivering endlessly tedious lines of dialogue (that there surely won't be enough of IMO)... Mass Effect will be your game.

But yes, uncanny valley symptoms aside, they did a great job with the 'digital actors' - one day they'll be as convincing as Chuck Norris.

I agree, except about the story, which I thought was alright. Jade Empire was a step back from Bioware's previous games in every regard. It was disappointingly mediocre.

The train left the station quite some time ago my friend, and at this particular point in time it doesn't look as if it's going to stop any time soon.

Hmm I give this troll attempt a D-. Marks taken away for mentioning Chuck Norris, that is so 2005. Although I gave you some points for nice use of the word "bollox".
