EA is restructuring Bioware to focus on Mass Effect 5

That aside, I always enjoy a bit of corpo speak:

In a blog post from general manager Gary McKay, he wrote that the studio is "taking this opportunity between full development cycles to reimagine how we work at BioWare."

Then we get a comprehensive look into people being transferred, terminated, being given opportunities to apply for other positions within EA, etc. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

To me, it sounds like they're pretty much dismantling Bioware, but trying to do so in a way that doesn't incur negative back lash. As well, if they're moving talented people to other positions within EA - that doesn't bode well for Mass Effect.

Did they give numbers on how many people are even working at Bioware now then? Are they cooked? They sound cooked with a few people left to pitch a possible Mass Effect 5.

Every time I see this video I get angry. Why the fuck would anyone think that would fit in a video game like Dragon Age?
That is actually very easy to answer - because they think people want to feel represented in a video game. So instead of making it a tool for escapism they transplant the real world into the setting. Hence trans people in a world with dragons and necromancy.

Game development time really took a shit during Covid and Working from Home started to be more common at this Studios...
Wasnt ME5 announced in 2020 or 2021?
This shit should be in a playable start to finish state by now.

When did Mass Effect became the gold standard for what Bioware once stood for? I can still clearly remember the vitriolic hate the third game got for "ruining" the ending (and by extension for some, the entire trilogy) and for the second game stripping out all the RPG elements, and for the first one being a "dumbed down" RPG compared to their other titles.

I have no skin in the game as I never liked Mass Effect to begin with, but having seen the discourse since the first one came out, the revisionist history has been interesting to watch.

No way this game is good. Sounds like a mass flood of DEI folks about to further ruin whatever this was going to be.
If anything it sounds like EA may have "restructured" a large majority of the people involved with Dragon Age (and its most complained about aspects)

I think once the dust settled people appreciated the series for what they tried to do and the extreme ambition. Nobody since has tried to do anything even close.

Remember we live in a gaming era where games are not allowed to "fail" see Alone in the Dark, Deus EX, and Guardians of the Galaxy as examples...

EA has announced it is restructuring Dragon Age and Mass Effect studio BioWare, moving a number of developers onto other projects within EA and focusing entirely on Mass Effect going forward.

In a blog post from general manager Gary McKay, he wrote that the studio is "taking this opportunity between full development cycles to reimagine how we work at BioWare."

IGN understands that EA has already placed an unknown number of developers from BioWare into other, equivalent roles within the company. A smaller number of Dragon Age team members are also seeing their roles terminated, and are being offered time to apply to other roles within the company if they so choose.

BioWare's structure has shifted repeatedly in recent years. The studio had a round of layoffs in 2023., and has seen a number of high-profile departures throughout the development of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the most recent of which was director Corinne Busche announcing her departure from the studio last week. It is unclear how many individuals work at BioWare today. IGN asked EA for any comment or specifics on how many individuals at BioWare are being impacted by this change, how many are facing layoffs, and how many will remain at the studio.

No comment I think mass effect 2’s squad building needs to return

Having an evil villain like the collectors helped, and BioWare has showed they can take years off and come back with a game of the year contender (ME2)

Seemsl like it started during COVID for sure.

ME1 2007
DAO 2009
ME2 2010
DA2 2011
ME3 2012
DAI 2014
MEA 2017
Anthem 2019
DAV 2024
ME5 ????

That was an insane 7 year run from 2007 to 2014 especially if you consider all of the DLCs each game had including Origin's big expansion Awakening.

OG. Classic. I remember this wallpaper. The characters, graphic and story is pretty good.

EA is really really patient with this studio. They didn't have any problems closing down studios with some incredible history after 1 of 2 their newer projects have underdelivered. Bioware is after a series of flops and they've already proven with Andromeda they're incapable of making another good ME game.
