Nintendo Mentions "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" Games, Can Only Be Played on Switch 2

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

**Compatible systems must be linked to a Nintendo Account to use virtual game cards. Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system. To move virtual game cards between two systems, you must pair the systems via local wireless and an internet connection, but only when pairing the systems for the first time. Up to two systems total can be linked per Nintendo Account.

Sounds like we're getting Switch 1 remasters on Switch 2, in the form of "Nintendo Swich 2 Edition" games.

I'd be shocked if they don't have a bunch of remasters.
That said this could also just reference cross gen games that will launch as 2 different SKUs for Switch 1 and 2. Sort of like the Ps4 and Ps5 versions of cross gen games being treated as different products.

"Switch 2 editions" of games are probably going to be more expensive too (they'll probably use the opportunity to raise the standard price of their software to $70 like everyone else).

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I'd be down to buy some remasters of Switch 1 games if it means I get a more performant version of the Xenoblade games. I'm not saying I think it's a good value (it's fucking not), but that's the only way I'm going to get what I want from Nintendo.

There is no surprise for me. Nintendo 3DSXL have the same concept. There are games that only 3DSXL can run, unlike base 3DS.

edit:

New 3DS, not 3DSXL.

Nintendo Switch 2 games can only played in a Nintendo Switch 2 console, shocking.
This is listed separately from "Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games", which yeah obviously will only play on Switch 2.

Not really. I'm guessing there will be quite a few games that are cross-generational. For most digital games on the PSN, if I buy a PS5 native app, I am able to download the PS4 version (when available) to my PS4 at no cost. It's so much the norm, that I'm shocked when it isn't the case. Cross-buy not being standard on Switch 2 is really strange and kind of lame, but given that it's Nintendo, it's not at all surprising.

the Xenoblade X 60fps mode is already leaked due to dataminers isn't it?
The dream was that games like that (and the 60fps mode in Thousand Year Door that's in the code but also not available) would just magically have better framerates when played on the better hardware.

But if they're doing "Switch 2 Editions" of Switch 1 games and selling them for full price, there's no way in hell they're going to provide "free" boosts for existing games.

Probably a $10 upgrade fee like Sony does for some games.
Hopefully Nintendo goes this route, because there are many Switch games that I would buy a $10 upgrade for (BotW, TotK, every Xenoblade game, etc.) but exactly zero that I would buy a second time for $70, especially when it's been confirmed that I can still play the original versions of those games on the Switch 2.

I think they just mean Switch 2 games can't be shared with a Switch 1 console, which makes sense, because why would the Switch 1 run Switch 2 games

As I mentioned above, read the fine print I quoted and bolded in the OP again. These "Switch 2 Editions" are different from "Switch 2 exclusive games".

Doesn’t seem like a big deal until we get more info. To me this reads like it’s no different than how PS and Xbox handle cross gen. You can install the PS5 version on PS5, or even the PS4 version, but you wouldn’t be able to install the PS5 version on PS4.

Wtf man? i even fucking bet the switch 2 will not have a gba slot like the dsi

uhm... this line of reasoning doesn't make much sense.
there are bound to be Switch 2 native versions of games that are also on Switch 1. this was always going to be the case, so this clarification by Nintendo here literally doesn't add any new information

Sry, yeah. New 3DS.

Was a Monster Hunter that only the new 3DS can run, the regular one can't.

there was no Monster Hunter that only ran on New 3DS.

the only New 3DS exclusives were Binding of Isaac, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem Warriors, Minecraft and some super unknown little games that probably even noone on here ever heard of

I guess you missing the point. There are indeed games that the regular 3DS can't run. I would guess NS2 follow the same premisse.

Minecraft is a bit of a surprise. Hasn't that one been backported to a bunch of retro machines?

This is to stop the public doing what they did with the Wii-U.

Why can’t I play this game in my switch ? It’s the same thing.

...the fuck... of course it will... it's the fucking next gen console...

the way you are talking about this is as if anyone ever thought that won't be the case... as if you went into a grocery store, pointed at an apple and said "I think that apple is edible", as if that was ever even questioned by anyone.

It's Nintendo.
I'd expect remasters to be a full $60 and maybe offer a 40-50% discount to people who own the original version (so around $30-36)

I think those ports are not really ports of the existing versions but completely new from-the-ground-up developed versions using proprietary engines.
the New 3DS version is based on the 4J version also known as "Minecraft Legacy Console Edition"

It's the crossgen train. Arriving late at Nintendo, but passing through despair, deflation, sadness and ultimately terminating at yikes

Super Smash Bros Ultimate Deluxe
Zelda BotW Deluxe
And Zelda TotK Deluxe on the way. Unfortunately.
I'd pay full price for Ultimate Deluxe if they finally fix the online, current implementation basically ruins it and makes it useless even with cable + 1vs1 + only friends all using cable

I have only physical copies of Switch 1 games. My only concern is whether or not on my Switch 2 when I can get it is if I will be able to upgrade the Switch 1 version of my games to the Switch 2 version. I'm wondering what the stipulations will be (if any). If I have to rebuy games at full MSRP to get switch 2 enhancements or it's locked away to digital only Switch 1 games, I will obviously be disappointed but if so, I will need to be more selective on which games I essentially rebuy.

For the time being I will be holding off on buying Switch 1 games until I can verify how this is all going to be handled by Nintendo.

I could see both free updates and paid upgrades happening. For example a game like Echoes of Wisdom could get a free 60 fps patch on Switch 2, while TOTK could get a paid upgrade to improve fps, resolution, textures etc on Switch 2.
