Why does it have a USB - C on top and bottom? How fast are the usb ports on Switch 2 supposed to be? 3.2 or 4?
I can’t recall seeing any rumored specifications about the speed, only that there’s two of them.

But as blacktout blacktout mentioned it has been speculated to be part of some gimmick related to attachable peripherals.

Could just be so you can attach a charger while using it in tabletop mode, but there's been a lot of speculation that Nintendo is going to create accessories (possibly a camera?) that slot into the top USB-C port.

I am hoping for 4.0 usb while docked for future proofing.

Guys, that's an optical sensor like a computer mouse! Credit to JoMax213 and anne-so on the NintendoSwitch2 subreddit:

"this would corroborate the first leak when the user said there will be a surprise on the top of the new joycon. When asked about it he said he could not say much except "think lasers" "

You can see from the leaked photo it's the exact same technology as a computer mouse laser. But will it be used AS a mouse pointer? Or for some other I/O reason? Or up to the developers?

I could say that while the bottom is for the dock, the top is to charge as portable

It's ugly, and I never think that it is the worst charging by the Switch bottom, but I can see that mindset

I wouldn’t get my hopes up too much given how useless the Switch’s IR sensor is..

Could be mouse functionality, especially if they have a shell like that one PC Handheld.

However, I'm wondering if its inclusion has more to do with this patent: https://www.freepatentsonline.com/20160231773.pdf

They already have the linear image sensor/IR camera/whatever on the bottom. I wonder if this works as an illuminator to light up the inside of non-powered attachments. That way you can drop a Joycon 2 into an empty controller shell with a stick, D-pad, and shoulder buttons that has reflective markers on the underside of those components. The camera/sensor would then be able to read precise movements of the components, making interactive buttons etc. without the shell having to have any electronics of its own.

Of course this would be for other attachments besides a dual-analogue shell. Get ready for the 1,000th fishing rod attachment since the launch of the Wii or, possibly, a lightgun rifle for hubting games with more moving parts/buttons built into the body. A mouse could easily be a part of that continuum too, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for that alone to be the main purpose of these components.

Then again, it's Nintendo. Not making a whole lot of sense is what they do best.

Is this the leakiest Nintendo console pre-announcement ever?
We don't have any games though. Like nothing. Prime 4 is assumed, but they could always pull a Samus Returns and not even have a Switch 2 version or upgrade (as upsetting as that would be).

Mario Kart 9 is the only game part of the leak, but even then, it's an assumption due to the #9. Other than that, nada. Yeah the console is done and specifics are starting to come out but ...

The game front is very quiet.

I hope it stays that way. I remember the entire Switch lineup being leaked back in 2017.

That’s way worse than having the hardware spoiled imo.
You're not wrong but ...

Can't help but want to know at least a few things. Mostly that Prime 4 doesn't get screwed.

Ahaha, the magical "nvidia etch", folks?
Did your expectations from vanilla Switch materialize or did they not?

Mr Huang once said "it is a business to them, it isn't a business to us".
That was 7+ years ago.

Now Mr Huang has Datacenter GPU business that dwarves his gaming GPU business to less than 10%.

It is quite interesting a company that makes money on each console sold and a company used to hefty margins collaborate at all.
Expecting major R&D from the Filthy Green here is naïve.

but because it will be the most powerful handheld with exclusive games.
Steam Deck and co, along with AMD, would want to have a word with you, cough.

Nintendo is about fun games, not bleeding edge graphics though, so I don't get why people are so upset.

Myself, I'd be more happy to get joycons that don't suck.

Yeah, one of the first companies to adopt USB-C to the point most people didn't even know wth was that port when Switch first came out, some even claiming they should have used a more standard micro USB lol

The Switch is based on a NVIDIA Shield and the NVIDIA Shield also used USB C..

Perhaps you'll be able to add a wii-style sensor bar to the top of it when docked. And if the joycons have ir capability it'll be possible to play wii games with them.

Davevil Davevil might like the idea.

Are you sure about that? I'm not sure about Switch SoC being TX1 actually meant the console was based on Nvidia Shield, but that both of them use the same SoC.

I mean, I'm not saying Switch 2 is gonna have USB 4 necessarily, but I don't think we can base the assumption of it not having it on any past fact, if anything Nintendo going cutting edge on that regard could mean it could use USB 4 of they consider it necessary.

Remember that Nintendo doesn't cheap out just because of some blood pact with the cheap god or something, they won't on tech they consider necessary, TX1 was actually cutting edge when it came out, just that the raw power wasn't on par with other machines for reasons we all know, and other features were actually very advanced like HD rumble and USB-C. For Switch OLED they even put HDMI 2.1 iirc, not because they wanted to output 4K but most probably because it was cheaper to put the more advanced component instead.

Some people expected Tegra X2.

Regarding USB-C, Switch 1 supported 10 Gbps, which is good enough for 1080p.

How much will they need for 4K output? Maybe not a lot, especially with DSC.

USB4 means nothing, since we're talking about a closed/proprietary system (console) and most people won't care what it has, as long as it works:

I’m just leaving that here but today I noticed that the Switch Minecraft edition has a Raytracing toggle. Must not mean anything, but I found it intriguing. It’s not usable, obviously. Probably just not patched out.

there's a chance this won't be OLED to keep costs down right?

wonder if it makes sense keeping my OLED switch even if I plan on picking up the switch 2 due to better display, or whether the new switch will render the old one obsolete due to superior specs otherwise

I doubt it will have an OLED screen. but a good LCD is good enough I feel.
as long as it's not as bad as the Steam Deck LCD's screen it will be fine.

It absolutely will. There’s very little they’d have to upgrade for that to be the case, and from the specs we’ve already gotten it’ll be a huge upgrade relative to the original.

Pretty sure, Nintendo only wants to delay the announcement as long as they can, since Mario Kart 8 is still selling pretty well. They possibly have already the next game ready at this point…
