If it wasn't a financial failure then what sort of failure was it?

6 of the games on the top 10 list this month are games MADE by Nintendo.

I'll buy it because it's a Zelda game and I'm contractually obligated to buy it, but I'm not gonna be happy about it.

Siras Inc.donny2112 said:Microsoft does the same thing. There've even been interviews with Microsoft reps who have access to their own internal numbers who have said that NPD is usually "close enough." I think they still use the independent trackers to 1) keep track of other systems, 2) to not reveal their internal numbers, and 3) because then the numbers are from an independent source.
I think Fuzzy remembers the name of the Nintendo service, but it's escaping me at the moment. They set it up to be able to track warranty and return information back in the 90s.

Alright Pachter. Tell me, how much has Microsoft used from the Xbox generation to fix every 360 that gets a RROD? I'm hoping I can get exact numbers so I can take this conversation to the next level.
Sony does not have many billions to spare like Microsoft does. They're both big dogs but MS is on another level.vocab said:Alright Pachter. shykyoichi said:By that logic, the PS3 is a failure. And the Dreamcast. And the DS too.
Microsoft lost about 3.6 billion dollars on the original Xbox. Prior to recently turning profits with the 360, they sunk an additional 4 billion on it. They started combining the Xbox division in with the Zune and a couple of other things, so that conflates things somewhat, but probably overall in the games business MS is sitting at about -7 billion dollars. The 360 itself is probably about a three and a half billion dollar loss at this point but is now generating income, so who knows, it has an outside shot at breaking even by the end of the gen. Of course, before starting the Xbox project, Microsoft committed themselves to losing about four or five billion just to gain some console marketshare.vocab said::lol

They're probably in the hole by like six billion dollars. Now let's talk about how Nintendo could possibly be subsidizing the Wii after bleeding away all its NES/SNES profits via the N64 and GC. Oh, wait.vocab said::lol

Killed any chance of Nintendo ever again having relevance in the portable gaming market.vocab said:Virtual Boy. Go.
Companies rarely report financial results for individual consoles, so all we can really say about the VB is that whatever losses were associated with it were more than covered by the SNES and Game Boy, since Nintendo showed healthy profits as usual at that time.vocab said:Virtual Boy. Go.
