Official May 2008 NPD Thread - Wii, GTA IV, and more Wii

I love seeing Nintendo's philosophy (which Guitar Hero succeeded at first) win. I love having my (formerly non-game playing) co-workers ask about upcoming games. I love being invited to Guitar Hero parties. I love being asked to bring the Wii to people's houses or to work for people to try. I hate being asked "where can I get a Wii?", though.

With Game Party still doing so well in sales, I'd be surprised if eBay and Amazon Marketplace aren't FULL of Game Party. Not because of demand, but rather because of how many people probably bought it at $20, played it, and realized what a pile it is. Or, more likely, GameStop is probably filled to the brim with traded-in copies.

The only thing keeping Game Party from joining the ranks of the worst Wii title I've ever played/owned (the throne there currently being held by Classic British Motor Sports and London Taxi: RusHour) is that the trivia contest game is pretty fun, especially in multiplayer. Beyond that, it's a mess.

Late last year, I bought it in that "two $20 titles for $20" thing on CircuitCity.com, and after playing it, I popped it on eBay. Somehow, the auction ended at like $28. :/ I felt guilty that someone paid above retail for such a piece of shit game.

I honestly think GTA IV didn't move hardware because, well, the game fucking sucked.

I think MGS4 will move more hardware than GTA IV.

But people wouldn't have known about the quality of the game until after they bought and played it. After all the positive reviews the game was getting, you would think it were flawless. It's clearly moving a lot of software.

This was quite an interesting month. I however wonder if GTA4 capable hardware will pick up for the month of June due to the start of summer and as graduation presents.

I think with MGS4 in the picture though, we'll see PS3 benefit more from June sales.

Month to month the PS3 has been increasing, and if you notice with software what most people haven't noted is the 360 has many more 'sold' and yet the increase in sales per ratio is lower with big titles (GTA = best example, in terms of tie ratio on the PS3 its huge)

When I was working at hellmart I honestly really only sold 360s to people who needed to replace, whereas PS3 is incredibly popular (although its maybe 50 percent as a gaming system 50 percent strictly for Blu Ray) considering you couldn't give it away a year ago

It will because it's selling to a 4.5M userbase, while GTAIV sells to a 15M+ one. GTAIV PS3 exclusive would do the same, if not better. I mean, i for one bought an X360 for GTA.

Oh. I just realized that 1 million weren't sold in the NPD because it's 1 million to all of North America, not just the US.

Don't get your hopes up. GTA is massive franchise, significantly more-so than MGS, and it should have moved consoles. It didn't.

Of course, the presence of the MGS4 PS3 bundle should help PS3 sales, but don't expect anything huge. I suspect it'll only lead to disappointment.

Half of the Wii games in the top 10 are by third parties. I don't see a problem here.

Alright, here are a few charts I've concocted.

The first is monthly sales of January-June 2007 against the monthly sales of January-May 2008. It's kind of cluttered, so I apologize for that.

MonthlyConsoleSales2007v2008.gif

The good news is that each console is selling better than it was last year, and all are selling better than PS3 and 360 were last year. 360 has the least gain year-over-year, and I'd bet that PS3 has the most, though Wii is probably not far behind, with roughly double what it had last May (I haven't bothered to calculate, sorry.)

The second displays what month each console passed what I call "sales milestones," which, I have arbitrarily decided, are multiples of 1 million. If you want to know when XBox 360 passed 5 million units sold, for example, just look for where the 5 million consoles sold meets up with the--you know what, you guys should know how to read a chart by now, so nevermind.

ConsoleSalesMilestones.gif

Finally, I questioned some analysts as to how they project a future installment of my Sales Milestones chart might turn out, and the result is below.

That seems feasible, right?

don't be too offended, the dual shock is basically a SNES pad with Analog sticks and rumble.
And most importantly, grips. I even bought a Nyko "grip" peripheral for the Classic Controller, but it still makes it nowhere near as comfortable to hold as a Dual Shock or GCN controller. The Nyko peripheral also has a place for you to attach your remote and wrap the wire around which makes it feel more like a standalone unit, but it also makes it clunkier and more center-heavy than a DS3.

For purposes of most new games I'd probably prefer Wiimote or the GCN controller, but as a controller that's SNES-like but modern, Dual Shock is my favorite option.

This is kind of bad... conventional gaming is failing to drive hardware sales -- both the PS3 and the 360 performed terribly in relation to the fact that the best-selling video game of all time just released its latest installment on both platforms.

Super Mario Bros. 3? Pokémon first generation?

NSMB's legs have been incredible. Over 5m in Japan (the first non-Pokemon to do that since SMB or something), and about 70k/month in the States. I wonder if/when it'll catch SMB3's overall sales.

Nintendo is in front for the first time in 15 years. Don't act like they've been in first place the whole time.

The best-selling games are still HD games (Halo 3, COD4, GTA4).
Except for Pokemons, Nintendogs, Brain Age, Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario Party 8, etc... Which all have already massively out sold CoD4, Halo3, and GTA4

So yea, the "best-selling games" are not HD.

It's been boring for a while now.
Last time we still got meltdowns though. Even the most stupid fanboys are slowly accepting Wii dominance, which makes these threads somewhat dull. The good old "Wii doesn't sell software!"-defense doesn't work so well anymore.

Are we still in the state of

Microsoft does well - 3rd parties do well

Sony does well - 3rd parties do well

Nintendo does well - Nintendo does really really well?

Judging by sales, it seems to me 3rd parties who get it are doing quite well on the wii

I think we established before that some 3rd parties (like Epic) cannot easily jump ship. If you sell your games mostly on graphics, then Wii dominance is very scary, and there isn't much to do about it.

Sure, some of the executives may just be plain stupid, but more of them probably don't have any real choice.

Here are some LTDs for games which did not appeared in the Top10 in the last months [and which appeared, too].

But we don´t have exact numbers, just a minimum and maximum of sales for this titles, but the real amount is between this two accounts.

All numbers till end of May 2008.

Sorry for the the big differences between minimum and maximum [for some games], but these are the best numbers we have. :)

Wii:
Wii Play: 5.765.357
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: 3.197.100
Super Mario Galaxy: 2.956.370 - 3.203.370

If people think Game Party is fun and worthwhile they should probably hurry up and release Wii Tax Return and Wii Sit On It (with cactus dildo accessory)

Nintendo's philosophy has been to create new ways of playing and let the 3rd parties spend the time, money and effort on perfecting them. So I get nervous when I see them attempt to cash in when they should be carrying the torch. It only takes a few $50 mistakes to turn love into resentment.

I think Nintendo's Wii supply for this Nov/Dec is important if they want to be as successful as the PS2.

I think supply problems will be significantly reduced by this time.

In a financial year when Sony shipped 22.52m PS2s (Apr 2002-Mar 2003) they were able to ship 8.03m in Oct/Nov/Dec ww, which led to them selling a total of 4m in the last 2 months of the year in the US alone and 8.63m for the fy total.

This financial year Nintendo forecasts shipping 25m Wiis, 2.48m more than Sony shipped.

With all the hoopla over the "epic failure" of Boom Blox I thought the extremely low debut for a game like Haze would get major amounts of attention. Maybe even its own thread.

Guess not :lol

what are you talking about

Haze is a low budget game that had nearly no development time and also it debuted over 60k which is the standard of amazing success

actually Hazes success is comparable to GTA IV only that it looks a little bit less in comparison
