Nah, the button mismatch sucks. Plus the resolution on the Deck is lower. It does have OLED and HDR which is nice, but I still prefer streaming to the Portal now that it is fixed.

If you are a PS/PC gamer and could only afford one or only want one then Steam Deck is the better choice of course, but the Portal is not exactly a expensive device so if you find yourself streaming from the PS5 a lot it is well worth the money.

If you get a PS+ Premium subscription, it has hundreds of games to play on streaming without having a PS5. But yes, it's a PS5 accesory and not a console.

Well, not me. In fact, I think its successor pretty likely will also run natively Sony's PC and mobile games, making it way more successful than the first one. And also way more than a potentail PS Vita 2 btw.

The 4090 outsold the 4080 despite being $400 more. The 4090 even outsold the RX 7600 despite being $1400 more expensive. Price isn't everything.

Things happen a lot slower than you're anticipating.

But you can be sure that Sony will push PS+ Cloud streaming on their TVs within the next 12 months and that they'll not work with Samsung on getting it on their TVs.

It may still be wise for Sony to put out their own Smart TV device akin to Nvidia shield and Apple TV and perhaps tiers of them like the FireStick. Microsoft is already partnered with Amazon, but that doesn't mean Sony can't partner with them necessarily. If Sony was smart they'd get their streaming app on every device available and bundle their TVs with Dual Sense controllers.

Anyone else having a pairing issue after the most recent update? I use a passkey on my console and previously I'd turn on my Portal and enter the passkey there. Now though I don't get that option and can only use it if I turn on the PS5 and enter the passkey with my controller. Sort of defeats the purpose if I have to be right next to my PS5 every time.

The good thing about cloud initiatives like this is that they are nearly pure profit. Sony can put out a cloud player every generation based around the latest controller. It's a new pillar for them for sure.

They don't need to sell 80 million Portals. All they need out of the Portal is for it to be a net positive on profit on hardware sales, for it to boost software sales and engagement, and PS+ Premium subscribers.

I think one the tech is good enough that you can't tell there is latency, then yes, Cloud will take over consoles just like it has for music and movies and tv.

It probably needs to be closer to perfect for gaming though simply because its interactive. Sony has a huge advantage over Nvidia and Microsoft here. Even though they have better cloud infrastructure. Sony has more popular hardware and hardware is always going to be a gate to streaming. The iPod was popular because it was digital and that was a necessary step ahead of going cloud on the iPhone with Spotify/Apple Music e.t.c.

Sony also has the software development.

When the time reaches equilibrium, hardware simply becomes a barrier to adoption. If Sony normally gets 120 million people in a generation, they could probably reach 200-250 million through a combination of hardware (console and handheld) and streaming. But there are things that streaming is going to struggle with which is VR, which could also be the future of gaming and gaming hardware.

So now you're going to all portal threads spreading doom and gloom, why do you always overreact about everything? What makes it great is it's a companion device to your main platform which further enhances your experience within the PS ecosystem. Ngl, kinda tempted especially since it will probably be close to 200€ this Friday or this week. I have a PS5 but it's just so much more cozy when everyone is sleeping to fire up a Steam Deck and not a huge ass blazing white colour everywhere in the apartment (I like very calm and soft environment in the evening, all the bulbs at home are yellow light and I have dimmers everywhere).

I think this will be the same for games in 10 to 15 years. the vast majority of people will just accept cloud streaming and we will be the hardcore shouting at the cloud (literally) lol

It's hard to predict what is going to happen in the future and how soon, but gaming is a very different reality than streaming movies/music. The portal itself is just a companion piece to a main console and only now is it getting streaming stand-alone (in beta) and still at a very limited capacity. This not what has made the portal popular until now and I doubt there will be that many people with a PS plus premium sub and no main console. Whatever dystopian future you have in mind, the portal will not be why we get there. You should instead be looking at what Microsoft is doing with the "everything is an xbox" initiative where they've all but abandoned their own hardware and are trying to push people into streaming from other devices.

Again, it's a companion device for convenience. Go tell portal users that this is the only way they will always play with no local option and tell me how it goes. Cloud steaming is great as an option to complement your gaming as it has some nice use cases. It also has negatives so only using the cloud is a big no-no for most people. As always, you're barking up the wrong tree focusing on the portal while Microsoft is literally pushing for cloud streaming as a main option.

It always lifts my spirits when I stumble upon a fellow movie collector.
I think just like Blu-ray and dvd though as long as there's a big enough market in console gaming, they will keep releasing hardware to play locally.
I do agree with you that we will be in a minority though

I think I have legit tried game streaming on Xbox or any service around 3 to 4 times in total. I'm not a fan of it anywhere. I know it will be the future but I don't like it.

I will buy native hardware as long as I can.

Microsoft has some of the worst streaming though.

Having tried Geforce Now, I can say it is not a future that gamers should dread, with some specific caveats.

Obviously, when the tech improves I know I will be guilty of using it for most games. Like streaming movies etc.

And you are right, when I tried Xbox it was pants. So I havent had much experience with it.

I think Microsoft struggled from a common trope in business.

The strength of Azure made them not invest in tech to primarily improve the experience.

Sony bought iSize to improve their streaming compression. Everything Sony does has to be done on a budget. They're not say your scrappy start up, but they still have to work with what they have in order to make similar results.

It's literally the only thing it can do for no reason. Its hardware is able to but can't access PS5 media app or cloud streaming. Actually, I am going to push for it to never get updated for PS cloud streaming or app support since that's what some of you guys want.
