Playstation Portal reviews

Oeh, a snobbish i-look-at-you-from-above-you-simple-peasants remark. Thats new.
Oh look, a cretin who completely misunderstood my comment.

How, exactly, is it snobbish to question the value of a niche product that only people with lots of disposable income will buy?

It isn't, of course, it's the complete opposite... unfortunately, you were too stupid to appreciate that.

I'm gonna go out for dinner and if I see one I'll buy it.

In my country seems like there's a scalper situation already.

People on marketplaces already over-selling the PS Portal for like 60€ euros more (with 12% discount mind you, meaning 326€ total :messenger_tears_of_joy: )

Yes, but, on reflection, I still think it's overpriced and unnecessary...but, that's just my personal opinion, and the market will decide if it is useful.

I'm all for choice, so I'd never attack a company for making anything, I just think it's a niche product and doesn't really offer much.

Hell Let Loose feels pretty decent actually since its not as twitchy as COD

I tried turning off the 120 hz on my PS5 and go back into COD and for me I couldn't tell any difference, I was still getting smoked.

On larger maps when I want to snipe its pretty nice but get on Rust and its a bad time for me

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
And nope one strike in Destiny tells me this not for me. sitting 3 feet from my ps5 and the lag is noticeable, can’t get head shots for shit. Back in the box it goes, took longer to update then I used it…

Yeah its not a good time for fast paced shooters

Fucking gamestop didn’t get their shipment and never notified me. I would’ve bought it elsewhere.

Now it’s sold out everywhere.
I preordered the Explores at 2 different places because I have a feeling that will be a similar issue. The way it is launching has short shipment written all over it

voted poster of the decade by bots
I searched the user you mentioned and read his impressions before I replied but didn't mention it because, big surprise, they didn't change anything. Okay, they were positive. There are other users in this very thread who like the Portal who say that they can't use it to play twitch games, even though I would have no problem playing a twitch game on my Wii U gamepad. Which is over a decade old. Somehow, my expectation that Sony might implement a similar solution for a dedicated use device, which largely came from Portal defenders on GAF months ago, is "imaginary".

It's a one-trick pony that struggles with the one trick. Yes, it still has utility if you really need that trick, but they could have should have done much better.

I've seen 120ms, and I've seen people who like it say it's bad for the wrong types of games. I've read about 25 posts. I think I've seen enough to form a picture of what's going on here. If I really missed something so megaton, show me please.

Well for one, wii u had extremely limited range, if you left 15ft you were done. You can use this anywhere in the house, and even away from the house with a good hotspot. Second the screen quality and size were knowhere the same as this device.
A pretty crappy 480p panel 65% smaller.

Your assumption that there is no advantage vs remote play on a phone etc is wrong, they control the quality of the app on fixed hardware much easier plus the built in wifi of the device itself.

As to delay, ymmv, guess we will see what most people get out of it.

More shipments will come in.

That said, I wouldn't be optimistic of getting one after the 1st/2nd week of December (by Christmas/ years end)

Maybe it's just me, but after playing a few matches more matches, MW3 seems to play pretty fine to me.
Not perfect like on tv, but still fine.

Turned off the 120hz-mode in the in-game options and it does seem to make the game run better.

My guess is that some people having trouble have a bad connection and possibly some of the issues are from having to play with the sticks, which are pretty different and less accurate than regular DualSense.

I don't think the online multiplayer "issue" is that big of a deal.

For single player, what would you rate this? Also is the battery life really 5 hours? Assuming you can’t lower brightness settings.

Hmm, why would that be? I would've assumed they'd try to mimic the actual dualsense as close as possible. Does it seem like cheaper quality?

Could be me, but I think it's the size in combination with a smaller screen.
Because they're smaller, making tiny adjustments while aiming is a bit harder.

I also think the deadzones might be different, but I'm no expert, so that too could just be me.

For single player games this is an easy 8/10 purchase for me if you know going in what its meant to do

Great little device when away from your main display and still want to play around a little like how I love sitting outside and MLB The Show was playing great

Personally really like this thing

I thought for once this board was unified on finding this thing to be the most pointless, stupid thing ever. Yet here we are again, people rushing out buying one.
thats because the vocal minority is the loudest and the hate bandwagoners jump on, and then disappear when the games actually come out.

there was always interest in this. its just a niche product but there were always people who wanted it but were drowned out by the haters.

I didn't think to look up the original Steam Deck price until now (with OLED being released). It's currently $400. If it drops to $300 I may pick one up. I have so many old games in my backlog that would run perfectly on it.

I honestly don't think the Portal is that bad, but for $200 I wish it did more, like being able to put your games directly on it. I think an exclusive handheld similar to the Vita would do very well right now.

Agreed, this thing could have been much better if it had a memory slot and let me put MLB The Show on it and play "offline"

Well we got something like 6 preorders for the PS portal where i work. I had 9 extra to sell .
They sold in 2 hours. 😳
I could have doubled that if i had more.

The only thing i am afraid is that some customers who purchased it (click and collect) called it PlayStation Portable…

I hope we won’t have too many returns.

I don't remember here who called that about a flood of returns but looking at people's comments on reviews and such several are saying they are returning it because they thought it was a portable device

Went to my usual gaming shop and only 2 left. Now there's only one.

Hope my gameplay experience ends up being smooth.

Any teardowns yet? I'd love to see if the sticks are magnetic or the usual crap that'll start drifting in a few months.

Release in Poland is December 1st? Is that EU or only poland getting fucked ?
I am kinda annoyed by sony always putting Poland in 2nd or 3rd place....

Also how is the screen for an lcd? For example phone lcd screens rarely have any glow/bleed but steam deck lcd had bad glow and bleed

Just got home and fired mine up. Holy crap this thing is nice. This is coming from a person that uses a laptop and a DualSense to do remote play regularly. The screen is not OLED, but is is still very
very serviceable and looks amazing.. As far as the image quality, it is quite purely the best I have seen using remote play. Lag is almost non-existent as well. I played some Street Fighter 6 and Spider-Man 2 and it was great.
I'm gonna be spending a LOT of time on this thing. Sony has a winner here and if they add cloud support in the future, it's gonna take it over the top. For my setup I have an Xfinity router with a 1GB connection (typically ~700 down ~100 up). Both my PS5 and Portal are connected wirelessly to my 5GHz Wifi. Gonna give it a go with my mobile hotspot later but so far I'm definitely pleased with my decision to pick this up!

Your PS5 tethered or on WIFI? Not that I think that'd make much of an improvement but curious. Are you able to pull any performance reports from the console to portal? Seems like the lagging issue was noted back in one of OPs videos too.

For anyone using with lag/latency/quality issues, your best option is wired PS5 to the router, but if you really must have it on WiFi, double check you are not on 2.4ghz instead of 5ghz. I had pretty bad quality + latency issues until I switched it to 5ghz, now its near perfect even via WiFi instead of wired directly to the router.

Is the image quality crisp or is there blurry macro blocking?

Already dropped it off at fed ex. My ps5 is plugged into a orbi access point and portal was connected via WiFi. Sure it would be fine with something like spider man but I mostly play destiny and just not what I need.

😐🙄

Yeah right... Steam deck has 7 of score... And the Playstation portal 8....🤡.

Que babosada 😂

I can't really disagree with a 7/10 for the Deck launch review. When it first came out it was quite rough around the edges. Of course now it's a easy 9/10 device.

PlayStation Portal is a far more limited device, but it is also cheaper. It does the thing it's supposed to do well, while having a few minor issues (lack of OLED and WiFi 6).

This thing is sold out everywhere. Wow.
Yeah my main Gamestop said they got 5 extra on top of the covered preorders and they were gone by noon

Granted there isn't another Gamestop within about 40 miles of that one and only other place to buy anything like that in town is WalMart

I hesitated to buy a Nintendo Switch because I thought the portable aspect was pointless and was hoping for a permanently docked version. Turns out, I actually use it at home portably far more than I use it docked. There’s just something convenient and non-committal about it.

Sold out in the Netherlands retail stores, Mediamarkt, Gamemania, and Coolblue. Still available from PlayStation direct. To be fair most stores at Mediamarkt only received a handful of units.
