Playstation Portal reviews

meh... I can stream the ps5 from my steam deck if I really wanted to. I do it from my pc all the time, but streaming anything over wifi has its drawbacks, even fast wifi6.

Steaming is ok for a few minutes and then the stuttering happens and or resolution breaks and choppiness. I don't see how this device will be different. It was like that with remote play on vita to ps3/ps4. It was like that with steam deck. Its that way on Steam link to pc over wifi.

I recently hardwired my pc and steamlink, before on wifi streaming would have issues, being on Ethernet stopped all issues except for the load in at the start. I don't know how they can negate the stuttering / resolution syncs from packet loss on wifi. Maybe if PS5 broadcast its own wifi signal like a printer would, it could have a dedicated communications stream, there is still packet loss though which is viewable when its a constant stream of data.
Yea I know exactly what you mean, I could barely remote play Spiderman 2 between 2 PS5's and both were hardwired and in rooms literally next to each other, on WiFi is was laggy as fuck, this was me running on 76mps internet as well, its why I'm hesitant to get a Portal atm

I have two tvs, one in the living room, one in the bedroom.
I live in an appartment and my living room and bedroom are basically in the same room.

I can always ask my gf to watch tv on bed while I play on our main tv, but sometimes I won't mind using Portal so we can just chill together on the couch.

Same on a lazy sunday morning, me on my Portal and her watching tv, in bed together.

More than enough uses for something like Portal.
Especially as our newborn grows older (currently 4 months old), or if my gf and her son want to watch a movie on our main tv.
Yea that's pretty cool man.

From the VGC review linked in the OP.

Pros:
  • The most comfortable handheld on the market
  • Bright, crisp screen
  • Strong battery life
Cons:
  • No bluetooth support
  • Requires solid WIFI for best results

Can it even be considered a handheld device if it’s only operating while tethered to a home console? This thing blows it’s essentially a Wii u gamepad for ps5.

An on/off toogle on the portal?

Because mine makes me setup HDR everytime the TV is off on using a different input channel, haven't been able to see a on/off toogle on the Portal itself.

If you're talking about the console itself sure, but that makes you go to the console, turn HDR off, turn tv off, and then use the portal.

Or am I missing something here?
Yes, you have to turn it off on the console itself, its an oversight on Sony's part, it isnt automatically turning off HDR for the Portal stream (according to some, I never actually tested it myself, I just played one game, never noticed it, heard it mentioned here and turned it off, I'll do testing over the weekend)

Portal doesnt really have many settings as it is just a receiver for the Stream, you can control volume, brightness, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, turn on/off the mute and led strips, and the network connections, and thats about it really. All other settings are PS5 side, so they'll more than likely push an update to the PS5 to fix this issue, along with 120hz mode if that really does affect latency (didnt really see any difference on mine)

That's a shame. How did you find the lag? Not sure my son would mind pixelated so much but the lag would get him

I don't suppose you've tried it out fo the house? Maybe public wifi or even tethered to a 5G phone?
Well most public Wifi has that login screen that doesn't show up on Portal (something else Sony will fix no doubt), and I haven't tried 5G yet, I cant really test that here as I live in a valley so 5G signal is crappy anyway (I use Wifi calling to get around that issue)

its noticable but better than expected, sometimes its good sometimes its awful with no indication or overlay telling you why

Played FF7R last night for 3 hours. Not so much as a hiccup or stutter

Then turned on TV and put on PS5 input. Amazingly close to each other. I'm going to take a video of the two screens as they are as close as I've seen anywhere.

I'm also taking portal to work today where I have a very solid 5g connection. It doesn't have as many drops as I do where I live, kind of a valley so I get spikes. So going to test it from work on my hotspot.

For those with a Mesh Wifi, try and make sure your nodes are hardwired if possible otherwise you can have higher then expected latency.
Wondered about this as my house I use 3 Asus routers one main router and 2 repeating that are not hard wired but the couple of times I have looked the portal is on my main router

Maybe because when I turn it on thats the closest router, does that make any sense?

I need to take it outside and look on the PC to see if it hops routers.

Hey uncle Heisenberg, can I also have one pretty please ?
Give me a few years of service of house sitting and taking care of our dogs while the wife and I travel and you too can have good Christmas presents (not to mention you need to be one of my God children) ;)

Gamestop called. They have my preorder!

Not sure if i want to drop $200 on something the ipad can do but i can’t pass on a new PlayStation gadget after buying the psp and vita on day one.

Lol I'm so weak 🤣
I have a 2.5 Gigabit FTTH connection, using a 5GHz hotspot.
Early impressions, the screen is big, but the system feels light and comfortable, the streaming quality is really good in my house (see screenshots) except in a couple of rooms where I have some stutters and resolution drops.
Unfortunately the screen is not HDR and so you have to disable it manually on the PS5, this is boring and they need to fix it in a future update.
The system does what I expected it to do.

I don't understand who the market for this is.

A Switch is the perfect remote console, you can play it anywhere, i.e. the whole point of a remote console.

For this product, you have to have another console (PS5), turned on and be on the same network as it................... wtf?

Who is buying this? Someone who wants to play while someone else watches TV?

You just nailed: Someone who wants to play while someone else watches TV.

Or someone who wants to play some in bed before going to bed and their console is not in that room. Or just playing in different rooms that your console is not in.

It is not for everyone, but I can see in homes where fighting for a TV this could be useful. Or you just want to be able to chill in a different room and play some.

All of my consoles are in my media room ATM, and it can be isolating sometimes during the weekend (which many times that is a good a thing). However, if I want to be around my wife but still play some, at times I will play games on xCloud in the living room as she watches TV. I am not playing anything super intensive when I do this, so for me I would not be playing 100+ hour RPGs this way, but if I am just wanting to play something lite, it works.

Tell you what, the experience is much better than what you get on the ipad. I have a 1k OLED tablet that can absolutely do the job, bigger screen, better colors and better wifi but the logistics and comfort of the Portal makes it the better choice.

They really really needed an OLED screen here tho.

10+ use-hours in. This thing does exactly what it claimed it does and I'm happy to have it. My kids love it as they'd rather chill on the couch and play a game while the other watches a show. We have a Switch too, but they're happy to have access to our PSN library now in a similar form factor with a much better controller. I've got a well laid out Wifi 6 mesh system and it's been lag free enough for me to finish the last boss of Lies of P on it without any noticeable input lag. I was going to try some multiplayer online stuff but the headphone situation is my only frustration, but I'll be getting the new Elite headset in Feb and that will be fixed. I'm very happy with my purchase because I knew exactly what I was getting into. When spring rolls around I cannot wait to be lounging on my front porch with this thing in my hands.

I will post my extended thoughts later, there's a lot of good here but theres also some very clear drawbacks, gonna play some more and collect my thoughts before doing a "review".

I thought id miss BT but

- speakers are nice
- im using the pulse 3d with a 3.5mm and they work very well with 3d audio, no need to spend more $ on audio.

Only if you use Portal.

But it's not it's own system, so claiming it will die sounds dumb.

It's just a tv/dualsense combo, nothing more, nothing less.

That makes sense.

Nobody has to develop content for this so the one you buy will always be useful.

I don't think it will be an incredible success since its a pretty niche product. But those who buy it don't have to worry about it not being supported anytime soon.

Yeah, the screen is way better than my ipads. color me impressed. I looked up at the game running on my oled and it didnt look that much better. Game mode really kills the colors of the OLEDs.

i will do another comparison with the ipad for responsive though. Controlling spiderman felt heavy. it wasnt laggy. i checked the tv and they were both virtually identical, but it just felt different. Had to switch to the 60 fps mode for spiderman to feel responsive. Not using vrr so not sure whats going on. maybe its because of that 120 hz bug?

build quality is good. gadget is sleek, if a bit too heavy. my son is loving it which is all that matters. i doubt i will be playing too much on this thing if ever. i have spent an ungodly amount of money on my man cave's oled tv and atmos surround sound system and im not about to start gaming on a $200 handheld.

Try a couple of 3.5 to BT adapters from Amazon. If they're crap send them back. Worth a shot if you don't plan on getting the Explores or Elites.

I saw on Reddit that if you go into the ToS in the settings, you get a browser to pop up . . . so you can use hotel wifi, and it might get exploited.

Edit: sounds like people still can’t get it to work in hotels. ☹️

Worth pointing out that if you are in range, wireless PS5 headsets work out of the box. Was surprised how well it seems to work without having heard anyone else mention it. Pretty nifty.

Oh you mean connected to PS5 while using Portal? Never thought of that. Does it sync up?

Yup!
It just worked out of the box. I had to do nothing.
I haven't really tested quality/latency yet.
I'll try it out this weekend. This could be a nice solution for for people that use og pulse. I did try using a Samsung usb to 3.5 as well as an OTG cable connecting a dongle and got nothing. Looks like the usb c port is charge only. The location of the 3.5 jack does allow for a nice hidden BT adapter though. Nice audio options for A lot of people complaining about lack of BT and not being able to use their Pulse.

At least this thing allows me to turn on my PS5 from far from my house? or connect to the internet more than 10 kilometers away and play it?

As long as your PS5 is in rest mode and your Portal is connected to a solid wifi connection, you can be anywhere in the world and be able to turn on your PS5 and play.

Suppose if I go on a trip to another state or country for vacations, can I play it on this device?

My main PS5 is in Florida that my portal is connected to and brought it along with me back to Indiana to show my nephews at a birthday party last night and NBA and MLB The Show worked very well and they actually did ok in COD

Granted have very strong internet at both places with 3 gig fiber at one house and 1 gig fiber at the other
