Does anyone know if you can trade between US and JPN versions? I know for the RBY VC games you couldn't due to the languages not being embedded in the data but I was wondering if GS was the same.
I only know that the English and Korean games can do it for sure (only way to get a legit Mew or Celebi on the original carts).Does anyone know if you can trade between US and JPN versions? FML.
Made it to Ecruteak and caught me a Magmar. :3 Just gotta beat up Morty, grab surf, then hunt down a Natu for my team to be complete!
Mine was Flame Wheel, Flamethrower, Fire Blast and Ember. More fire! Those elemental punches in Goldenrod are a godsend, these movepools, blegh.
Zubat finally learned bite so he's fun to use now.
10 year old me was the dumbass that had 3 fire attacks and cut on his Typhlosion.
I've never used Natu/Xatu because their movepool in both this and Gen 4 is trash (level up wise, at least).
Ooh, that's rough. Are you allowing yourself to get a casino Pokemon? Could make up for it that way.
I'm not looking forward to the Kanto part of this, it's such a slog with no pay off.
Kanto is fucking horrendous in GSC. That's why I always stop after finishing the Johto league, Kanto is just not fun.Sure you're playing the right game?

Actually due to a programming quirk in the second generation, the fast ball only has a 4x chance on Grimer, Tangela and Magnemite rather than all Pokémon that can run.Next route after the forest the first thing I run into (with like a 10% chance) is a freaking Abra, I have a fast ball (4x the catching chance) and it fails.
Guys, this is unreal.
I've just chosen Chikorita as a starter on Gold and the very first one is shiny. I didn't reset it even once, though I originally planned to reset it to get decent IVs.
As a reminder, the odds of getting a shiny Pokémon in Gen II is 1/8192 (the only exception being breeding, in certain circumstances).
Kanto is more of a victory lap than a true second half. You can blaze through it pretty quickly thanks to all of the gym leaders being more or less the same level.Damn, the disrespect is real.
Getting back to the statement, if you don't enjoy it, that's you, but to say there's NO payoff is just incorrect.

Kids' move sets are fun

The difficulty spike from Blue to Red is unbelievable.
Yeah, GSC Kanto is fine for what it is, I just understand why some people don't dig it that much.I enjoy it as a victory lap or built-in expansion pack.
There are flaws worth noting, but the other guy was just being hyperbolic calling it horrendous.
HG/SS fixed a lot of those issues, but for some reason I'd rather play this version.
B2W2 managed to top this with it's second half, but then again 20 year old me couldn't appreciate that as much as 10 year old me appreciated GSC.
As for Red well his team at such a high level and with the terrible level curve it takes such a long time to grind to match his level, plus the HM Flash is required to even reach him so the player has to cripple their team to fight him, with it being much worse in the remake.
Do people actually grind up to the 70s just for Red? That sounds terrible. I've always thought the fun in that fight is doing it super underleveled. Red's team is kinda shit so it's totally feasible to beat him with a team in the low 50s. If you're actually on par it must be a pretty easy fight.
Calling Kanto "horrendous" is ridiculous. A ton of people enjoy it. It has flaws, but for me it's about the vibe, atmosphere and joy of having a whole other region to play through. Is it better in HG/SS? Yes. But it's still good fun to go through in this game.
And the soundtrack spreads it's beautiful wings with those remixes. Brilliant stuff.

No-one is saying that Kanto is horrendous, just that some feel that the inclusion of Kanto affected Johto and the level curve so instead of getting a meaty full region they got an overshadowed region attached to a region that is pretty barren.
Kanto is fucking horrendous in GSC.
Don't remember the exact numbers but it seemed to be 9 to 11 MB depending on region.I can't seem to find it mentioned anywhere and don't have my 3ds handy. What's the file size per game?

Holy moly, congrats!
Make sure to give it a good nature when you bring it into the new games.
My plan is to get a bunch of x items and to park Ampharos in front of Pikachu for a bunch turns while boosting everything up.
Though you need to have something on your team that doesn't get destroyed by Pikachu to do this.

I just completed the Johto league in a little under 8 hours.
My team is:
Feraligatr lvl 43
Ampharos lvl 43
Alakazam lvl 42
Lugia lvl 42
Farfetch'd (Cut and Fly on the same pokemon yo)
Gyarados(HM Slave)
I had played through this game many, many times as a child. But I think this is the first time I played it without just soloing it with my starter.
My most prominent finding for this playthrourgh was that the elemental punches are absolute insane to have easily available early in the game.
Under 8 hours? What in the world
Planning on getting this an hoping for this to be my team:

If you do everything past Ecruteak city in an order that avoids backtracking you can progress through the game really quickly. I also skipped most optional areas.
It also helped that my dudes were pretty much obliterating everything in their path.

Well, just started the third gym, and guess what. Whitney's Miltank is destroying me. :/
Or trade with somebody who bought off the eshop! So I bought both games on Amazon in hopes of getting the corresponding themes and Celebi codes only to learn that its literally impossible to get either unless you buy them directly from the eShop. I then tried contacting Nintendo directly and they proved to be no help whatsoever. Is buying one of the alternate language versions of Gold and Silver off the eShop my only hope at this point?
Ugh there is no patch of grass to catch a Mareep before the Violet City gym. Pretty sure in HG/SS there was so I was banking on that. All that easy EXP I'm going to miss out on now.
