I was thinking maybe the regional pricing disparity is factoring in shipping costs as its quite high right now which sucks. Been causing me to use free shipping options more regularly as well as saving up items with shopping and saving firms, such as companies I use in Japan like Tenso. But maybe its also to set expectations on quantity limits, say early adopters get a higher price to slow demand a bit as initial stock might be low for those regions. Just guessing though, or maybe they feel those areas will have customers willing to pay the price.

But I'm stoked for next week! Got my disc drive and stand, plus whatever is shown during the Tokyo Game Show. I'm hoping for some nice surprises.

Worldwide shipping cost has plummeted the last couple years actually. We aren’t near where we were the end of 21’ and 22’. More due to exchange rates etc.

I have 14TB of additional storage on my XSX (5TB and 8TB externals for XBO/BC games, 1TB expansion card).

My current PS5 has a 1TB SSD installed and a 4TB external for PS4 games. I'll obviously move that 4TB over to the Pro.

My PC has a 2TB SN850 as the C: drive and then a 6TB D: drive.

The only reason I won't get the 8TB SSD in the Pro is because it's $1,000.

I have a external Samsung 1TB SDD for PS4 BC, a 4TB internal Nextorage nvme for PS5.
I don't use the built-in storage for games.

My main build has a 1TB WD Black sn850, two more WD sn850's for games a 4TB and a 2TB.

Gotta cover those bases.

According to people the 800 euro includes the VAT tax.

The real comparison is $700 US + state tax (avg about 6-7% tax). So $750 US.

That converted to Euros is 680. So Europeans are paying 120 extra Euros for nothing. Also, the US/Euro currency exchange rate is the exact same as 2016 with PS4 Pro at 0.90. Back then US and Euro price were 400 each.

Sounds good on paper, but you forgot that VAT is usually 20% in most European countries. So the conversion is "decent".

I've seen so many people talking about the internal resolution without understanding the PSSR will bump it from there. They honestly believe whatever the internal resolution is, is what it will be. I saw one channel where people were saying even the Series S can do better and that the Series S is going to end up being stronger than the Pro. It's insane how this machine is exposing people.

I watched the uncompressed 4K presentation on my TV, the same TV I'd use the console on, and while you can see a difference it's very marginal and not enough to convince most people to spend SIX HUNDRED NINETY NINE US DOLLARS.

What's the point? It only shows that USA has smaller tax then EU, but that's not Sony's fault . If US had one single tax like 23% VAT then the price of PS5Pro would be something like $860.

Again - $699 (so without tax) translates to €628,59. Then you are adding VAT and it's €773,16. Now if we remove the VAT from €799, then it'll be €649,5. That translates to $722,78. As I wrote, more or less the price of stand .

But I agree - there were times (and still are depending on accessory like stand) when the prices where translated 1:1 between dollar and euro. I don't know if there's some other tax applied at Sony (like for the electronics) in EU so that could matter, or is it only convenience for them.

I find it interesting where and how Sony applies it's regional pricing. Where I live in Europe, the stand is €30, basically the number is the same as in the US with the obvious difference being the currency exchange. But the disc drive isn't €80, it's €120. The digital PS5 is €450, so the disc sku is £500 right? Nope, £550. From the consumers end it comes off as very arbitrary and all over the place. Very clearly they have even more of a stranglehold on the Europe/UK markets so they're relatively( in terms of currency rate) more expensive than in the U.S. I don't even see Xbox games in the stores where I live, or at best you may get one row of games with FiFA, COD and the usual annualized big money franchises. It's really shitty.

Not 24/7 MSRP but there have been some crazy sales in the UK. I think I got my second OG design PS5 for like £350 with the disk drive from Very in the UK. That was like £130 off.

You know, I might understand it if Sony were a hardware only company. Or if the projected sales for games wouldn’t make up for the subsidising price. But you’re selling this to the very people that bought a PS5 day one. Likely the people who spend the most in both your services and your ecosystem of games. They’re just being greedy with their best customers.

I would agree with this if base PS5 didn't exist. A lot of people are salty that they can't afford (or will have to suffer to pay for) a premium pro option that is not necessary. No one is being punished or left out of anything by the addition of Pro.

Pro is not a "gift" to "reward" their best customers. It's a product. If you buy it, you're their best customer. If Sony makes Pro so attractive that it's a no-brainer upgrade for everyone, then nobody buys base PS5 anymore and Sony is just subsidizing a better console to be nice and probably hurting themselves.

I agree they could have at least packed in a stand though, lol.

Might be also come down to failed ventures with all their cancelled live service games. And burden Bungie has been to their bottom line. That and the lack of competition to drive prices to whatever they want. So yeah, less incentive or need to subsidise to entice people to buy them.

In any case it isn't a good look, and will push people away to alternate platforms (or away from gaming) if the trend continues with the PS6. At this price though I can't see it selling all that well in the UK. Maybe scalpers and some whales will sweep it up but thats about it.

I don’t mind the European way of: work less, earn less, have a relaxed life, pay more taxes so our chemistry teachers don’t become crime lords when diagnosticases with cancer, have the Americans fight all the wars, etc, etc… so I accept that 400$ = 400€ even if out currency is stronger. But there is a limit. And I think Sony just jumped it.

People are "wilding" because the base price is already high and they can't even throw in a cheap stand. Also, I think more people have issues with the missing disc drive, which is ridiculously overpriced.

That pricing made me consider moving to PC in the near future, as I do not play that much on PS5 nowadays. PC has a wider selection of genres, but I do not know if I will want to sit at the same desk for work and playing games, plus it might turn out I will not play these genres (like RTS) anyways - maybe I've just become too old for regular gaming. The future of PS doesn't look too player friendly anyway, with online saves behind paywall, no Bluray drive for PS6 (most likely), and potential PS Plus price hikes.

The funny thing is the Pro is intended to bridge base PS5 and PC performance, but the price is making people consider PC anyway. Its either get a $700-800 PS5 Pro, of spend another $500-600 on a PC that outperforms the Pro and has all the advantages of a PC.

It's kind of as we said before, the same hook isn't there as it was with the PS4 Pro. Showcasing catalog releases on a compressed YouTube stream and then asking for $700/£700/€800 and then ala carting the disc drive and stand that probably costs them $20 and $2 respectively to make in-house.
