Resident Evil 4 Remake |OT| Welcome back stranger! What are you RE-buyin'

I've stopped writing for them; my final PU reviews were Elden Ring and Stranger of Paradise. I still have a lot of love for the mag (especially its history and a lot of its long-time readers) but its leadership is FUBAR, and its iconic identity and tone of voice have eroded into something bland and unrecognisable. And that's without mentioning the politics.

My absence there is for the best.

I would have given this a 9, though, I reckon. There's a lot of minor stuff that I don't like — and it sure as heck doesn't replace the OG game — but it's a very well-made, addictive experience that mostly retains the spirit of Mikami's original. Playing this right after finishing Metroid Prime Remastered, Dead Space, and Lo Wong is enough for me to call this year one of the greats. And we haven't even gotten our hands on Tears of the Kingdom yet!

I see. Ive stopped my subcription a long time ago. Should've done that much sooner but yeah, great memories from the early days. I think I still have boxes full of PU's somewhere in my dad's attic. Well, for what it's worth, you were a great asset and I hope you're doing well. Fun fact: my best friend at the time used to write a bit for NGamer.

Back on RE4R. Just finished the village last night and I personally love the parry mechanic. Game looks amazing as well. Good times.

Well, bugs aside....this remake is incredible. I think its actually better than the original.

Crazy.
The movement and camera alone makes it better. It's part of the identity of the original, but it certainly doesn't stack up well against today's standards (especially considering RE2 and 3 Remake). Quite frankly, RE4 original feels like crap when I try to replay it these days. I never had any doubt, especially with Capcom's recent stellar track record, that RE4 Remake was going to be better than the original.

Saw a couple people here say the Island is a slog, but I have to disagree. Compared to the Original's Island, they did a better job this time around. I think the Island section is much better paced in the Remake. Suzi Hunter did a good job describing it. In the Original the 2nd half of the Island felt like a Boss Rush. You had U3, the Laser Room, Krauser, the Assault with Mike, and then Saddler all in pretty quick succession. But the Remake trims the fat in some areas, and there's way better buildup toward Krauser this time around.

So RE4 or DS1 ? Loved both of the originals. Have just time/money for one of those for the time being.

DS1 feels much more like the original with a few tweaks, RE4 feels way more remixed, although not that crazy.

I actually preferred the DS1 remake in some ways because it was a flat-out improvement whereas this did some things better, some things worse. Both are great and it's hard to recommend one over the other, really depends what you prefer personally.

I beat the game last night. Very good. Not as good as the original though. I had recently played the RE4 VR game on Quest 2, and that might be the best iteration on the game.

Phew! Completed my 2nd run combining Sprinter, only guns/knives, and no talking to stranger. Had to rely on shitty knives since I couldn't talk to stranger to repair, was constantly low on ammo from about the midway point, finished with 7h55min on the clock, talk about cutting it close.

There were some incredibly frustrating sections, lots of quitting and reloading to optimize my ammo/healing/time usage but I got it done. Might attempt Professional run next or take a break, looking forward to Mercs in April, Hunk better be in.

My hardcore run has been a lot of fun so far. Only Del Lago gave me trouble.

The cow-head and chainsaw dudes go down in just two shots with the fully upgraded 2x damage sniper rifle. Red 9 with the exclusive upgrade kills every ganado in 1-3 hits. Even the tentacle go down in 2-3 hits. headshots dont explode their heads but i routinely get 1 shot kills to the head.

I dont use the shotty as often but man the fully upgraded magnum with the exclusive perk just destroys bosses. I chose to upgrade the butterfly instead of killer 9 because i honestly dont know how often the 5x critical rate would proc. Id rather get the guaranted 42 damage per shot. The ogre went down in 5 shots with the help of doggo. Mendez went down in 7 in his second phase. Shotty took care of the first phase along with some mines i had set up in advance lol.

I just wish there was a way to skip the del lago fight. easily the most frustrating moment in the game so far on hardcore.

How much of the crew from RE: 3make worked on this? This is a Platinum game.
None, This is the made by RE2remake team. which consists of members who worked RE1/2/Remake/0/RE4 & RE6 as well as Outbreak & Code Veronica as well as handling the RE/0 HD Remasters
RE3remake was made by a newer team with older members of Clover Studio and worked on Viewtiful Joe Okami
God Hand, Umbrella Corps, P.N.03, Dino Crisis 2/3, RE3/RE5/RE6/RE7&8 & well as the Resident Evil: Revelations series.

I really hope they release a “Classic” soundtrack for the game. Played my initial RE2make run with the default, then caved and got the deluxe stuff to turn on the classic music, and ever looked back.

I’d do the same here as the soundtrack is so muted and unrmemorable in comparison; easily the worst aspect of NuRE games, and a trend with newer games in general that aren’t fighting games.

Playing Metroid Prime Remastered and OGRE4 HD had me humming shit to myself all day. I can’t remember any tunes in REm4ke besides the remixed save music and the funky shooting gallery jam.

I wish more developers put effort into games’ music, but they all want to do bland ambiance stuff nowadays.

What do you prefer for magnum: Killer7 or Broken Butterfly?

I'm in chapter 9 right now, and I'm deciding if I should start going for the next tier upgrades or save my money. Man, they're expensive. I'll probably wait a bit to decide.

I'll eventually beat this remake...in honor of celebrating the legendary legacy of the original game, which is still my preferred version of the game, but there are many things I like about this remake, like Ashley's section and other stuff based on where I'm currently up to

Those formed Platinum which funny enough, are the guys from Clover you're talking about.

Capcom was assisted by subsidiary K2 Inc and external companies Red Works and M-Two, the latter being founded by former PlatinumGames CEO Tatsuya Minami. PlatinumGames veteran Kiyohiko Sakata, who had originally worked on the first four Resident Evil games as a programmer and designer, was the game's director.

Here's an article about It

The parry and dodge moves including some of the weapon design screamed platinum to me which is why I asked.

Are you able to get weapons back that you sold, in later playthroughs? I sold the red 9, and would like it in later runs.

I did some testing with the gambling for charms thing. Doesn't matter what order you put the balls in, everything is predetermined. for instance 1s2g will be the same as 2g1s, etc. Also if you a 3g (bear), then decide to try 1g2s, you will get the zealot with scythe. So these are the charms I have to look forward to...lol.

1x3g - bear -1 gunpowder
2x3g - merchant 5% off upgrades
3x3g - bear -1 gunpowder
4x3g - COMMON Soldier/stun 15% bolts
5x3g - COMMON don jose 15% handgun
6x3g - COMMON Soldier/stun 15% bolts

1x2g1s - ada wong armor repairs 30% off
2x2g1s - bear -1 gunpowder
3x2g1s - JJ 40% off resources
4x2g1s - Soldier/dynamite 30% mines
5x2g1s - Leon/handgun 30% off knife repairs
6x2g1s - ada wong armor repairs 30% off
7x2g1s - don manuel 15% smg
8x2g1s - zealot/shield 20% shotgun
9x2g1s - illuminados emblem 20% melee crit

1x1g2s - zealot/scythe 20% smg
2x1g2s - don esteban 15% shotgun
3x1g2s - bella sisters 20% magnum
4x1g2s - maria 15% magnum
5x1g2s - bella sisters 20% magnum

1x3s - zealot/scythe 20% smg
2x3s - don jose 15% handgun
3x3s - Soldier/stun 15% bolts
4x3s - JJ 40% off resources

You have any tips for a newb just starting?

Don’t think I can wait for a ps5 patch

I noticed a tiny bug that only a select few will encounter on the PS5, but it happens every single time.

If I start RE4 in remote play, and use my razor Kishi, then put the game back in rest mode, and the next time I pick up where I left off, the track pad and buttons no longer work. I have to close the game, then restart it.

By no means is this a big deal. Just a weird bug I’ve never experienced with remote play on either console.

Just play on normal. It's challenging enough. Hardcore on first run is going to be brutal. A friend of mine died like 60 times. Thats no fun for this kind of game.

Other than that, stick with the starting weapons. Starting pistol, shotgun, sniper all get great exclusive perks that unlock around half way through the game that will really help for the final 1/3rd of the game which is all action.

But if you want to experiment, buy the Punisher handgun from the merchant. You should be able to afford it with just gems earned from side missions before you even encounter the merchant for the first time. It's a fun gun to use.

Just explore and dont be afraid to backtrack to do side missions. Those gems have some really great unlocks. Especially the exclusive perk which unlocks the exclusive perk (2x damage on sniper and shotty) without having to upgrade everything.

P.S The PS5 version is great in resolution mode with RT, hair, depth of field, motion blur and lens distortion off. You dont have to play in the framerate mode that has bad IQ. Resolution mode looks great and runs very well at 60 fps 99% of the time. honestly the village is the most taxing area of the game.

Head shots aren’t always the best course of action. Don’t forget to shoot them legs and melee them.

Right before a weak knife breaks, either sell it or use it for crafting.

Flash grenades instant kill all tentacle stuff.

Bolt Caster is basically easy mode, as you can pick up bolts after killing an enemy. If you miss, you can pick up where you bolt landed, unless it’s out of reach. They even show up on the map.

depth of field and motion blur are sneaky settings that many dont realize have a major impact on performance. RT is obvious, and hair in this game costs almost 15-20% performance. thats 8-10 fps on a 60 fps game!

But I was playing around with the PC Version of TLOU Part 1, and ND tells you just how impactful Depth of Field and Motion Blur can be on VRAM, CPU or GPU and it was surprising to see them list MAJOR and Moderate GPU hit for Depth of Field and Motion blur. Lines up with performance gains i saw when turning them off on RE4 PC and PS5. Whats funny is that both of these features ruin the image quality. In RE4, Chromatic Abberation is literally broken and was recommended by DF, NX Gamer and other youtubers that it be turned off. Thats what was causing even the resolution mode on the PS5 to look blurry.

You wont need to parry much after you upgrade your weapons. Everyone should die in 2-3 hits.

But for the first 10 hours or so, yeah, you will need to parry a lot to avoid getting grappled by charging zombies. thankfully the game drops a lot of knives if you run out so dont worry about running out. dont bother wasting your money on repairing your combat knife.

Cool deal, how would you personally rank this RE game in the series and against other modern TPS titles?

I like it better than pretty much all of them, but Im also a bit disappointed because it feels like a PS360 game still. I LOVE the formula so I loved playing the game. I was obsessed with it all week playing 4-5 hours a day. When playing the demo, i wanted it to be more like TLOU2 but after playing the game, I want TLOU to be more like RE4. At least when it comes level design, setpieces, boss fights and side content.

But it's mostly just more of the same. It does everything better than Village, RE2 and RE3, but its not pushing any boundaries like the original did back in the day.

ok, I loved Chapter 13 so much, especially the Regenarador section in the Freezer and having to hold off enemies whilst 3 are in tanks where a loose bullet could free them, very tense stuff there, very Dead Space like

You can just kill them one by one before continuing with 3 rifle shots each though

Finished it, loved it. Gonna do a hardcore run on new game plus. I love endlessly replayable games like this. Definitely a lost art.

For the most part, it was pretty similar to the OG. All of the most memorable sequences were there. The stuff they did cut out was pretty inconsequential IMO, and replaced by superior segments. The optional mini bosses were a nice touch.

Anyone got tips on how to farm cash for the infinite launcher?
i used red9, riot gun, & sr m1903 rifle. i only upgraded/maxed red9. always fill jeweled items with mixed color jewels if possible. try to get the 20% rocket launcher price reduction charm from the shooting gallery (i did). &, of course, scavenge everything. i was able to buy the infinite launcher in my second playthrough during chapter 6...

Yeah I mean they both come from the same studio before they branched off.
But you can tell the difference between the two.
Even with RE5 that was done by RE3remake team, the DLC Lost in Nightmares was done by the RE2remake team and they also handled Leon's & Ada's Campaign in RE6 while the other did Chris & Jakes.
And if you look at the games like RE3, Dino Crisis, God Hand and their Clover stuff you can see one is very Action/Arcady like while the other is very OG Resident Evil slower pace type.

WHAT? Resolution mode runs at 60? Christ. I did my entire first playthrough on performance. I already turned those other settings off too.

The castle is the best location in the game so far (outside a couple of forced sections where you have to save Ashley). It is also much closer to what original game supposed to be at first when it comes to tone and atmosphere, which is a lot more closer to survival horror:

But I wish they've gone even further and returned those ghost-like enemies as well that reminds me of good old zombies.

My thoughts exactly. They improved the castle section so much, it's unreal. The castle in the original was easily the worst part imo. In the remake, it's on par with the other 2 sections. And I too did acknowledge the little nods here and there towards the initial RE4 beta versions.
