RTTP Last of Us Part 2: I've not been able to enjoy video games since

Got it day 1. Gameplay was nice but the pacing felt atrocious to me and the story wasn't interesting to me at all. Think I made it to day 2 or 3 (I remember Ellie taking a nap in some kind of cinema?) before dropping it.

I don't mind game's being story focused but damn, this one felt to me like the gameplay was an afterthought or something. Anyway, cool graphics and animations and the dog enemies were super tense to go against. The rest of the game, meh.

Yakuza 0. Don't let popular culture or memes make you believe it's a silly game, cause the main story isn't at all.

You get action, bits of comedy and tons of drama. Game is a bit of a slow burn but the later parts are a rollercoaster of emotions.

-Joel putting himself in position to be murdered was out of character.
Joel saving a civilian is out of character as well.

And as much as I disliked the ludonarrative dissonance discourse we had a few year back, the climax of the game doesn't work in that it's hard to connect with Ellie finally getting that revenge is wrong when she's responsible for a massive trail of corpses in her wake.
She did that because she forgave Joel, it's what the last flashback of the game is about.

Have issues with the story but the gameplay and atmosphere are excellent. Probably also the best looking PS4 game graphically, what they did with that 2013 piece of hardware was insane. Its funny and sad that the multiplayer was cancelled, I mean what the fuck happened they really overthought it. Could have been our generation’s SOCOM successor.

So you saying TLOUp2 have a better written than the majority of video game. Good
Hell no, what the fuck. Deus Ex, Planescape: Torment, Fallout, Baldur's Gate 2 and tons of other old western games have amazing writting.

Controversial story to say the least. Personally I loved it. I understand why a lot of folks despise it though. It was a dramatic shift from the original game. The intertwined narrative between Abby and Ellie, I thought, was brilliant, but others simply hated it.

Probably no single game has such a divisive reaction from gamers than TLOU part 2. I've learned to not argue over it though. People are not going to agree on this game and that's fine.
This whole thing matches my feelings about the game as well. Loved it, have no interest in going back to it anytime soon, if ever. Too much.

Joel saving a civilian is out of character as well.
The character at the start of TLoU 1 and the character at the start of TLoU 2 a very different, so I can buy it.

I don’t think anything has topped TLoU2 but there’s plenty of great games that have come out since its release.
After finishing the game, I walked away thinking it was going to considered objectively great. It wasn’t until I started coming to Neogaf I realized how wrong I was. The whole woke thing made me think I played an entirely different game than all the haters.
The only problem I had with the game was I think it was a bit too long. And of course the Factions thing. Factions 2 not happening has been the biggest disappointment for me this gen.

Pretty much my exact thoughts. If someone were to layout the plot for me I would think it was horrible and ND fucked up. Playing it though it all just worked and I loved that game.

My only complaint is that whole level of going to get that trans kid wasn’t needed. That whole scenario should have been pulled from the game.

I came to TLOU just a couple of years ago after bouncing off that first game a couple of times when I tried it on PS4. Finally got over the hump with it when the PS5 remaster came out and oh my god - those are two of my favorite games ever. I'm so clad I missed all the rumors, gossip, and complaining about TLOU2. I went in blind aside from a couple friends who were adamant I needed to play both games and finish them. I didn't know what to expect playing that game, so it was all new and surprising and great to me.

Joel Was Right Joel Was Right I know what you mean about hitting a certain high and then not feeling like you can find that again. Not that either of these are like TLOU, but I would recommend two movies that had a similar effect on me: The Grey Zone and Primer. I recommend going into both of these with no research and just see if they strike a similar chord.

I think about playing this sometime, but I've heard so much about it, and so much of what I've heard sounds bad, that I will probably never give it a go.

I agree about Horizon Zero Dawn's story. I thought it was very good, for a game. The way it involved a gradual uncovering of her identity, and how that tied into the fate of the world. Plus the robotics and the war, and the way it all shed light on the world as they found it. I found it very interesting. I enjoyed it more on a second run, because I was able to piece it together better.

I liked it precisely because it wasn't just Ellie and Joel 2.0, which would have been pretty dull. They had balls to do what they did with the story, and I know it pissed off people, but imo they had to change it up.

For me this game was and still is one of favourite story in video games.

Despite showing otherwise, in the first game Joel seemed a shitty person in a already fucked up world. In the end of the first game he sealed that for me. I was really neutral for Ellie in the first one but in second game I hated her.

On the other hand Abby definitely is not a good person but much better than Joel and so so much better than Ellie. Despite the endless hate she recieves here and other sites, I really liked her and can't blame her actions in a fucked up world. Her dad really didn't deserve what happened to him one bit.

Gameplay wise it is no surprising from ND. Both games were good but especially second game were so good that if the theme of the game didn't have horror and stressful factors, it would be one of my 3 top game.

Played it through the PS4 copy on PS5 and I although I really enjoyed it, it was too long in my opinion and it was pretty damn depressing for the most part. It's not something I'd play through again any time soon.

They did a good job with it though and I liked the fact that by the end I really didn't like Ellie and was more on Abbey's side.

Now that I think of it, I kind of do want to play it again! Ive mixed emotions about the game, that's for sure.

I watched the ending ages later on YouTube. It ended decently but it was such a slog getting there. The first game was paced so much better
I’m replaying it now actually. The first game is tighter but honestly, there’s not all that much to the story really. You could recap it in a matter of a paragraph or two (and I loved it). There’s so much more going on in Part 2, that it feels like more of a journey. Both are top notch, in any case. Loving playing Part 2 on PS5 Pro.

This game is a tragedy. Spam deaths for shock, the new characters felt like they were trying hard to push them to substitute the main characters as the fart smeller director somehow feel like disliking both Joel and Ellie (specially Abby hand fisting zombies, something the first one was very against as fighting zombies disarmed is suicide), while some people keep repeating the same monologues like "Joel is evil". This game is a pure infantile drama with remarkable stupid scenes (like the one where the guy decide to strangulate instead of using the weapon he has on hand, how convenient) and a story telling that doesn't even look like they're on a apocalyptic world full of deadly zombies. It's a propaganda game.

Characters of Tess, Bill, Marlene, David etc far more interesting than Owen, Mel, Dina etc.

That said no fucking floaty crate scenes in part two, so…

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I can't really comment, got the Deluxe Edition and got little far in it and just lost interest.
The game just didn't hook me like the original.
It was like watching The Matrix Resurrection.
I could upgrade my copy for the PS5 version, but.........nah.
Maybe I finally play it when they Remake it in 3 years.

This is probably the game I‘d point to regarding making up your own mind on things.

I understand where people come from hating it. But I enjoyed it for its great mechanics and the narrative intentions behind its story, politics aside.

I love the story in the last of us 2 precisely because it is not simply just a copy and paste of the original story the reality is dynamics shift in relationships they don't just stay the same and I think the biggest issue with gamers is their stuck in this Saturday morning cartoon Fisher price idea of stories almost fucking comical degree

It's like there's this expectation for everything to just continue the exact same way and then ride off in the sunset as if this is how real life works it almost comes across idiotic that anybody was thinking the story was supposed to be that way and then throw a fucking tantrum when it's not

The events that occurred in the first game told me that Neil's intention was for some sort of progression to continue to have consequence based on actions that occur because technically these are things that happen within the very first game with several characters.

I think in gaming you rarely have this type of story told because you have this corporate mindset to sell a character like a fucking action figure, Like the characters essentially eternal and could never be killed or something look at Resident Evil with Claire, Chris, Leon and Jill

So this corporate mindset seems to a look to create the static thing where you just get those characters every week like a Saturday morning cartoon to the point where the story becomes less and less Interesting because of a lack of any real finality

Nothing is wrong with this if someone likes this but I need people to stop fucking acting like that was a requirement for a video game story....

So hats off to the team for daring to actually make a story like this because I think gamers over reaction regarding the stories because they're used to fucking being spoonfed dumb comic book shit.

So I'm happy they did not go that route.

I need to play it again. I feel enough time has passed since release for me to have forgotten some stuff and experience the game at a nice slow pace.

I feel the first time around was tainted too much by the discourse surrounding the game.

I just finished it for the first time ever the other day and I’m so glad I didn’t care about it beforehand. I missed the hype, the spoilers and the hate. It’s a complete rollercoaster and dare I say the first naughty dog game that manages to tell a great story whilst offering stellar gameplay. Personally I can’t understand how anyone wouldn’t give this game the credit it deserves, but then again it’s their loss.

No I personally didn't liked, in fact all the character felt insufferable and I didn't care if they live or die.

Part 2 was more violent and and there are more death but none of them felt as impactful as the first game, the game was more interest to get shock out of people rather than actual care about story and characters.
Game of Thrones and likely The Walking Dead influenced that anyway. GOT most likely since I think it also influenced the TWD writers to try to do the same in their show.

I wish I hadn’t been influenced by all the leaks before playing Part 2. While I didn’t hate it, I don’t recall feeling much for any of the characters. I had the same experience with the original game, at least on my first playthrough. However, I enjoyed Part 1 much more the second time.

Before The Last of Us, I had hoped that Naughty Dog would work on a horror game, inspired by the last two chapters of Uncharted 1. They mostly succeeded in delivering a horror game.

The gameplay is great, and they improved it even further in Part 2.

I liked the gameplay, the graphics, the music, the sound design, and the setting.

Story had interesting ideas but it was implemented like if someone forced Kojima to write a plot after hitting him in the head with a hammer. Awful pacing, contrived plot events, weird takes on established characters, non-interpretive story that leaves little to debate or ponder while the credits roll. Part I was brilliant because just the ending scene alone initiated years and years worth of fan discussion. The story was arranged into acts poorly - should have intertwined the campaigns or gone Ellie Day one, Abby Day one, Ellie day two, etc...

Some people absolutely love it. It's probably a good entry point for people looking to get into grim dark horror/post apocalypse stories.

If you're up for a western with great characters, dialog, and story, try Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry. It's a long novel, but it's worth it. I don't know anyone who's read it who hasn't enjoyed it.

Well that can't be, The Walking Dead is based on comic book and in that book I'd argue characters actually die faster (i won't spoil anything for anyone)

but the theme of that isn't from the show, its from the book.

I love this game but it blows my mind how good people think these stories are. I mean seriously, the dialog in Naughty Dog games is straight 7-11 DVD rack. It's full of corny Hollywood tropes and Hallmark channel melodrama that would be ridiculed in any decent film. I think it's fine as an excuse to go brutally kill shit and have sick combat mechanics and locations but come ON. I know as a society we've given up on reading and all but fuck, is it this dire that TLoU2's story is the high water mark of emotional weight?

I love the game for the fantastic gameplay but good lord is it aggressively pretentious and full of contrived gravitas. I can just see Druckmann walking into the conference room every morning, pounding on the table, then doing jazz hands and yelling MASTER.PIECE.

I honestly believe the game is just played in the wrong order. You play as Ellie for almost 10 hours, reading so many journals and notes around the wolrd about how awful Abby and her group are. All that after she killed Joel.

Then you play as Abby and they try to convince you she isn't a bad person.

If they started with Abby, then killed joel, then you play as Ellie seeing all the awful things they have done in that city. I feel like the emotional tug of war would have been there.

I think Part 2 is better than the first one. I like the story more in the first game but I like both. Gameplay is much better in the sequel.

One of the greatest for sure. Masterclass cinematography, storytelling and gameplay. Visuals have aged tech wise, but the ageless art style, the amount of unique assets, beautifully hand crafted wide levels and superb animation sysyem still make this game a top 5 game regarding visuals.

nah, that’s like saying something like “after Oppenheimer I can’t enjoy tv/films anymore”. Whilst it was an incredible game that had story telling and polish above practically everything else (red dead 2 was similar tho), there are many stories to tell and types of games. South Park is no less enjoyable because X or Y incredible film exists.

My two favorite games of my life! 800 hours playtime in part 2, nearly 600 in Part 1. I just can't stop playing them almost daily! Graphics, soundtrack, cutscenes, gameplay, characters, story - I love it all! It feels everytime, as when those games were specifically made for ME!
I hope, Part 3 is not too far away!
