Saints Row 4 Re-Elected/Gat Out Of Hell Review Thread

Yeah, and there is also The Ark of the Covenant that I saw in some other vid. The only pre-order items I know of are Plague of Frogs and The Devil's Workshop. Should be fun.

There is new weapons and powers. Stamina isn't an issue if you upgrade. The main knock I have is that the mission variety is basically just side quest type. The characters are interesting, dialog funny, but it really boils down to causing mayhem in order to see the next story cutscenes.

Excellent.

Hype restored. Bring on Friday!

We only got our review code this morning, so this isn't a full review - but still:

If you LOVE Saint's Row, you're going to love this. If you wanted a year's worth of graphics upgrade, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

Karak's review has left me with second thoughts. I love all things SR, but this sounds like a really lazy effort. The lack of hell influenced weapons is just bizarre and I'm not liking the info about flight having a very limited stamina meter...

It is lazy but as I said elsewhere its only 20 bucks and has a large area to explore. Its got some flatly stupid upgrade requirements that don't match its short gameplay time, but overall you just blow shit up and then something happens then you blow shit up. I mean I still rated it a buy but I don't pretend its anywhere near perfect.

I loved Saints Row and definitely don't love this as this isn't as much Saints Row as Saints Row very very lite. But I think saying that can lead to totally unrealistic expectations. Instead go in expecting 20 bucks of gameplay and you will be happy I think.

Late to the party, but my review's up at Digital Chumps

http://digitalchumps.com/game-reviews/352-playstation-4/srgooh.html

In short I was kind of blown away by the near complete lack of new material. Nearly everything's just re-purposed or slightly tweaked from the main game. I yanked this comparison from my review because it's tasteless, but its the videogame equivalent of a new Taco Bell food item. It's composed entirely of existing material, but put together in a slightly different way.

From reading the reviews, it seems like the side activities are mostly variations on SRIV which would be have been perfectly fine IF the main storyline missions were any good but they also mostly consist of side activities. Still, the expansion is far worth the price if the Gamestop $5 goes through, I definitely wont be paying $20 for it though.

I enjoyed playing 3/4 with my GF, but we both agreed that it would be nice if it was just a slightly crazier GTA like 2 was, instead of the weird direction they decided to go. Hopefully the true next gen version doesn't try so hard to distance itself from GTA.

Agreed. 2 was the peak of this series. 4 just got way too whacky.

I can't bring myself to go back and play another game on that terrible engine. The game just looks terrible, and 4 was a really underwhelming entry into the series so I have no interest in spending more time with it. :(

Giant Bomb 3/5

Gat out of Hell isn’t particularly long, as the core story can be completed in about two hours. I continued playing after the credits rolled and am currently at the seven hour mark with a 92% completion rate, but you probably won’t have much of a reason to put that much time in if you don’t have a high tolerance for flying around and collecting hundreds of orbs. If you’re looking for a new collection of Saints Row activities in a new setting, Gat out of Hell is just that, so it can be enjoyed if you go in without expecting a significant upgrade to what’s been seen numerous times before in the series.

I'm hyped, but I've reeled in my expectations considerably thanks to your review. I feel it's for the best, I had the idea that this would be just as fleshed out as an SR game when that clearly wasn't ever really going to the case, so at least that false idea has been put to bed and I wont feel the crushing sense of disappointment when I do finally play it.

Out of interest, when you're flying around doing just random stuff, do those green stamina still pop up or do they only appear when you're doing flying activities?

Would have preferred Gat out of hell being DLC where I could use my own character I already leveled up to visit a new place and gain new abilities. As a standalone where I need to play as annoying ass Johnny Gat or Kinzie the entire time? No.

Bad scores all over the place.

Gat Out Of Hell will be the first Saints Row I will not buy, I'm already sick of non-gangsta Saints Row (SR3 and SR4) and Gat Out Of Hell seems to be just some rejected ideas from SR4 that Volition throw as a cheap game now. I also don't care about Gat, he is not a cool characters or anything, and I don't know why there is some obsession about him from fans and Volition writers, he is really just ordinary character with nothing special about him in SR1 and SR2 and getting his game is beyond me.

Deep Silver need to rethink all of this, the way they are handling Saints Row (and Dead Island as well) is just not good. SR5 need to return to SR2 style and Volition need time to make it, no more short development time like SR4 and Gat please.

SR4 did a great job of showing that this series is in desperate need of a major overhaul. Hopefully they stick to their statement that it's the end of the current saga (including the characters) and the next game is supposed to go in a different direction. And a big priority for them should be the world design. It's incredibly weak compared to pretty much any other open world game.

Agreed. I hope Gat is the last really crazy and 'out there' Saints with them returning to something more grounded and engaging for SR5.

Something like SR2 would be perfect. Create a city that's actually interesting to be a part of. Make it feel alive, make it feel like you're actually in a living, breathing city.

Saints Row 2 is still my favorite. Fun mix of zany bullshit from 3 and 4 and pretty good story moments. More customization too. It's a shame the PC port isn't that great (I never had a problem with it though).

I don't get their obsession with Gat either. He's really not a great character and I wouldn't miss him if he just disappeared.

The weird thing is I always felt like that was a good portion of the joke in SR3: Gat's in-universe popularity was tongue in cheek, mocking the more self-serious grindhouse attitude of the first two games. Making him the protagonist of his own expansion (especially in a series that has always had a great character creator) kind of loops back around to missing the point.

I will never in a million years understand how people prefer the lame GTA ripoff SRs to the ones where you can do pretty much whatever dumb bullshit you want to. I mean really, if you can't lose yourself in causing widespread panic with FIAJ in SR3 or the exploding plunger gun in SR4 then you're just dead inside.

Going to grab our two 360 standalone copies tomorrow. Reviews sound like it's exactly what I was expecting.

I've always loved Gat but I felt he was definitely the best in Saints Row 2. I'll definitely get Gat Out Of Hell but I think it'll be a summer sale purchase for me.

I'd like it if they figured out a way to keep it thematically grounded but still very "out there." One idea I've thought about (playing off the Gangstas in Space gag) would be to have it set in some alien metropolis.

I've always liked the idea that, given the time travel ending to SRIV, the Saints find themselves in some down and dirty historical setting where they can't rely on powers or mad weapons and such, at least to begin with.

I played all the SR3 dlc, but none of the SR4 dlc, and from what it sounds like, SR4 dlc is pretty much in line with what the SR3 dlc was.

Though I look forward to playing it all again on my PS4. I almost believe, in my subconscious, I am getting it on PS4 just to have an excuse to play the game again.

Can you buy IV as a standalone for PS4? Gat out of Hell doesn't seem as interesting as the main game to me..

Digitally, yes. But I went with the package deal for both. I only played around 3 hours of the 360 version on a rental and never got around to giving it the fair shake I think it deserves.

Reviews seem good enough to get me to buy it. Pretty much the only game from last-gen I wanted to play but never bothered with so I figure there's no better time to get it.

2 hour story and 92% in 7 hours doesn't sound like it's worth $90AUD to me. If I hadn't already finished SR4 it would. I'll wait for a sale or a PS+ version.

Exactly man. Thats all. Just keep them in check. They are in specific places for the most part.

Also as I mentioned in my review. The ending of Gat is...fairly cool:) I personally think they read forums and such about what people think about where Saints should go.

Unlocked it hits 60fps but stays around 45fps
As I said elsewhere the framerate is throttled by fun:) The more fun you plan to have the lower the FPS. If your idea of fun is anarchy and not standing still reading a book that is. Luckily it never gets unplayable at all.

I know I'm probably going to be disappointed buying this, but I'm really holding out for some references to old characters, events and what not. If there isn't any, I'm definitely not gonna enjoy this.

Really hoping this is their last over the top, 'let's screw up this entire franchise' entry. Just give me a sequel to SR2, damn it.

Saints Row IV is my favorite Saint's Row because it's fun to play. The humor has always been kind of stupid so keeping it grounded in realism but funny just makes me rather play a GTA game. Give me a cool open world I can do anything with. Only thing that would make IV better is Crackdown like drop in drop out co op with more players. And less sidequest feeling missions.

Because shitty gags that get old after 10 minutes are so much better than a good story and good gameplay, right?

As for me, it would depend on my mood. The over the top gameplay and God-mode powers that you can use against aliens and demonic hordes is exactly why I want this game. But one night, I might be in the mood to play something like The Last of Us instead and will come back to this later. So, yes, sometimes it is better. Other times, not so much.

Yup. they really need to stop with this super insanity stuff, 3 games (SR3 and its dlcs like Gangstas in Space, SR4 and it's dlcs, Gat Out of Hell) are way too much already. it's really the time to go back to the roots. There is nothing wrong to go back to the "Gangsta" style of SR1/SR2, that how the game got started and became popular, SR is about Gangs wars just like how GTA is still about crime. sometimes grounded and simple stuff are the best.

The city design thing is really weird, not sure why Volition guys don't seems to know how to design a city after SR2. SR2 Stillwater was amazing, tons of details and interesting locations and shops and activities to do in it, even the npc in the city are funny and do many things but then we got soulless Steelport in SR3 and they even managed to make it more dead in SR4 (it's a matrix sim) and now New Hades is a tiny location that is ugly and souless as well.

.

since SR2 it's not "just" a GTA clone but anyway, there are a reasons why people still love GTA. also in SR1 and SR2 you can have tons of stupid fun as well, but the core is sold game and not just a Prototype/Crackdown clone with limited everything and forced lame jokes and super powers that break the game and they try to take them from you on every mission (just show you how bad and unbalanced the game is), SR2 have tons of activities from racing, Demolition derby to jobs and many things but on top of that there was a solid story and great city that you can explore and enjoy.

Fascinating to see where they go with Saints Row next. The craziness ramp up sort of has them in a corner I think.

As for Gat out of Hell, it looks terribly dull. Series has been going steadily downhill since 2.

I liked him when he was first introduced. He's terrible now, though.

Gat out of Hell is pretty meh, indeed.

I finished SR4 on Saturday and these are my exact same impressions. Completely fed up with both graphics and gameplay. Watchdogs and Unity are so much more enjoyable for me,even with their flaws.
