Cope thread? Cope thread.

Imagine if SEGA tried this same checkers-level reverse psychology when they went 3P. "No no, those PS2 owners playing VF4 EVO are actually Dreamcast users. The Dreamcast MAU is better than ever!".

Their investors would've likely laughed them into more debt.

Exactly. An Xbox branded game on a rival console does not turn the people using that rival console into Xbox gamers.

Any situation in which a game that was previously exclusive to one console appears on the direct competitor's console, means that the first console is in a lot of fucking trouble.

No but creating an Xbox account and playing a game in that ecosystem does. Which you have to do with Sea of Thieves.

Okay, so you're confusing/conflating a piece of hardware with a service.

If you're saying that Sea Of Thieves on Ps5 brings more people into using Microsoft's gaming service - you're absolutely right. But that's the same as anyone using any company's service on a Ps5: Ubi, EA, etc.

Sony still profits from this relationship. And the Xbox as a piece of hardware dies even harder.

This entire thread is basically a discussion about Microsoft's gaming service, and how it probably shouldn't share the name of their failing console brand anymore.

Don't some EA/Ubi games do this as well? It auto links your 3rd party account and progress/etc is trackable on the 3rd party website.

Now they only need to do the same thing they did with xbox live gold users, twist the facts so that they can count the playstation players as gamepass subscribers

If someone is logged into an Xbox account regardless of platform they'll be counted in the MAU number. That's different than subscribers.

The Xbox market is tapped out for games like SoT or Grounded so 66% of X amount of new sales is way better than a flat line

Its easy money much like Sony porting games to PC imo

So will this change if\when Xbox has one of their games come out day\date with the PS5 version?

Here's the neat part, if Sony were to release GT7 on anything other than PS5, due to the online PSN account requirement anyone playing that game on whatever device it is could be counted as a PlayStation user.

Doesn't change the fact that it's now a port and in order to get those extra users, Sony would have had to bring the title to ecosystems other than their own.

It's just kind of dumb to me. Like trying to claim you own an apartment; no you don't, you just rent it. Claiming players of a game on a whole other platform as users of your own platform that's distinctively seen as NOT those other platforms, feels a bit like that.

Exactly.

In fact if/when Microsoft do begin to roll out their next generation of gaming hardware (I'm still expecting this from them), it would probably be a benefit to not use the "Xbox" brand name for those.

Yeah that name still has attachment with some diehards in America and parts of UK, but it's toxic everywhere else. At the very least, somewhat repulsive. Most of the gaming market doesn't have a lot of positive associations with the name "Xbox", not these days. Naming their gaming services & hardware with that would just likely hinder perception.

Don't some EA/Ubi games do this as well? It auto links your 3rd party account and progress/etc is trackable on the 3rd party website.

Yep.

Hey, EA was a big supporter of the 3DO right? Trip Hawkins is from EA. Trip Hawkins made the 3DO Company. The 3DO was a gaming system. The 3DO still technically exists, it physically exists in our reality.

Should EA start stating every PS5 user is a 3DO user? It's kinda true if you think about it 12D chess style 🤔....

No it doesn't. 3DO went bankrupt in 2003, they sold the hardware tech to Matsushita in 1996. They've been out of the hardware market longer than Sega.

Yeah but since we're reaching here anyway, why not reach even further?

I never did that. I never mentioned hardware in the OP. People who don't know how to read derailed the thread into hardware stupidity.

You literally said:

when you're playing Sea of Thieves on a PS5, you're still playing it on Xbox.

"On" Xbox. That implies a device to me, like a console. Not a service, otherwise you could just say "in". But we both know Xbox isn't referred to normally as a service; Phil, Sarah etc. never refer to Xbox by name when speaking of a service. It's always when they're speaking about the console hardware. They have a name for their service, it's called Game Pass. It's called Microsoft Account (or whatever that one is called).

So yeah, you definitely implied hardware in the OP, intentional or not. And on that note, the idea just falls apart.

No you made the same point I was trying to make but everyone else can’t see.
Ah okay 👍
Tbh I can see where the industry is moving quite clearly, things has been moving in baby steps in the same direction for quite some time. But Xbox console popularity dropped like a rock the last 6 months or so, as a console it’s not thriving at all, so MS is clearly more aggressive right now and pull strings they likely planned to not touch yet. Within a decade or less we’ll play Xbox games on PC, console(s), TVs, cloud, mobile, tablets, and everything will be synced, achievements, playtime, MAU, friendslists, everything.
I wish there were some leaked plans so people don’t get so triggered and think it’s trolling to say how things will likely play out.

Rebel Moon is on Netflix. Fallout is on Prime Video. Shogun is on Hulu.

Those are services. Everybody knows they are services.

Xbox is a console. Everyone in gaming knows it as a console. That name is mainly associated with console hardware.

There's a...not small difference between the two.

None of those brands have hardware with the same name. "Xbox" does. If they did, you would need to clarify which you were referring to.

It's actually amazing he is not in fact doing that 😂

Like I said earlier, he is being intentionally ambiguous and then feigning confusion/dismay when someone brings up the hardware. Troll tactics.

Nah, it's been this way for a long time. People just don't want to acknowledge it.

The Xbox network, formerly known as Xbox LIVE, is an online multiplayer gaming and digital media delivery service created and operated by Microsoft Gaming for the Xbox brand.

n 2021, Microsoft renamed Xbox Live as simply the "Xbox network" to cover all of its services related to Xbox, and began slowly phasing out all "Live" branding until it was fully removed in 2023.

And that’s not even a joke, I just quit the game and move on to something else as soon as a separate account is required. Make your games work on the platforms they’re on.
I am the same way.

I bought Doom Eternal on PS5. Install and start the game… it won’t even allow me to reach the main menu without a Bethesda account. I deleted the game and immediately returned it for a refund (one of the few benefits of buying from Amazon).

I bought Skyrim Anniversary edition upgrade from Steam. Instead of the anniversary files being installed by Steam, you must login with a Bethesda account to download the upgrade. I immediately filed for a refund.

Hell, I didn’t even bother playing the Crash Bandicoot trilogy despite it being a free PS+ game because you can’t get to the title screen without agreeing to two EULAs, of one which was 26 pages long if I recall correctly.

Xbox network
Xbox Live
Xbox Game Pass
Xbox app

None of those are just "Xbox". That is because the name "Xbox" originated out of the console and that is the base meaning of the word. If you mean something other than the console when saying "Xbox" on this forum or anywhere else then you need to be specific. Pretending all these Xbox tangents can be referred to synomously as "Xbox" is absurd.

I'm sorry I'll dumb down my posts for people who can't understand there is an Xbox service in the future.

Of course. Adding another 20+ million MAUs won't mean anything to them.

Cillian Murphy No GIF by ARTEfr

But those new 20+ million MAUs wouldn't be equal to their original 20+ million MAUs that were actual Xbox gamers. How can you not understand this?

Do you also think 10 TFs on a RDNA2 GPU is the same as 10 TFs on a RDNA1 GPU?

Why would this excite anyone other than Microsoft executives and corporate cocksuckers?
This.

Reading this shit gives some "fuck my wife while I watch" type of vibes, wtf is there to celebrate about this shit hitting the competitors console, and paying them 30% on top just to say "we got you on playing on our servers".

If you're playing a game with an Xbox (or MS dur hur) account you're part of Xbox MAU's. That's how it works. It doesn't matter if you're on a Xbox console, PC, a phone, tablet, PS5, or Switch.
