I'm a bit confused by all the models. I understand the very first HD Graphics model without TSSB has the best soundchip. What about graphics output?

i need my play through Technocop to be utterly flawless.

AFAIK all Genesis 1 and 2 models output a great RGB signal. Genesis 3 can't do RGB or even stereo, so stay away from that one.

Another addition to my collection.

Recently I've been thinking of expanding my collection to include Geneses games. There are a couple games that never made it to Europe, like Warsong or Shadowrun. Also most games will of course benefit from running faster (or the original speed) and US versions are often cheaper on Ebay.

I do need some additional hardware, though. If anybody happens to have a spare Genesis lying around I'd be happy to take it. Shipping to Europe will probably not be too cheap but I haven't seen many consoles on Ebay and I don't want an adapter solution.

I'd probably dig the novelty of playing a Bomberman on Genesis, but I already have Bomberman '94 on PCE which is the same game as Mega Bomberman.

Didn't know that. I always thought it was an original game. Looks like I also bought the inferior version, lol:
Despite the Mega Drive being considered the more powerful console, the port of Bomberman '94 to the MD actually has inferior graphics to the original version, and as mentioned above, fewer multiplayer options. There are also some changes in the soundtrack.

The Genesis Shadowrun is brilliant (if maybe a little grind-y). Its really like a proto-sandbox/open-world game

Is X-Men 2 any good?

It's alright, but felt like a lot of wasted potential to me seeing as they really improved on the graphics, sound and overall controls almost to the level of Shinobi 3, but didn't bring nearly the same level of attention to the gameplay. If the scrolling was tighter, especially in 2-player, and the challenge and characters were better balanced and more varied (no credits, no difficulty options, Gambit and Beast have very limited use), it would've been a must play game. If you liked the original you'll be disappointed to know that you can't switch between characters inside a level anymore and this can make things very frustrating if you pick the wrong one. Luckily there's a cheat code for this, but I don't get why they didn't just implement it properly.

After running through the usual testing of games from a flea market/ thrift store trip, i'm wondering why Jewel Master isnt more popular. Figured i'd keep an eye out for it since someone posted stage 1 theme awhile back.

Its pretty cool, graphic style while kinda antiquated, still works well within the game. Soundtrack is what you'd expect from someone that actually tried with Genesis hardware, and the ring system seems like it would provide you with a decent range of diverse powers.

Atomic Runner is trippy...and it seems like control mode 3-1 works best. Takes some getting used to, but I can see myself coming back to it.

I bought a Genesis today (my first Sega console!) along with Sonic 2, Greatest Heavyweights, and Genesis 6-Pak. How have I never listened to the Streets of Rage soundtrack?! So, so good.

Awesome! You should tell us what kinds of games you like, so we can recommend you a million bajillion games. :)

You like what you hear so far. There's plenty more audio goodness in the Genesis.

Recommendations would be great! I'm not too familiar with the library, only having played ports on other systems and the random game here and there on friends' systems.

My two favorite genres are probably platformers and RPGs (of any variety).

The Phantasy Star series is probably the standout JRPG series. 2 and 4 are both supposed to be good, 3 less so. You've also got Shining Force as the biggest SRPG series, but I don't know too much about it. If you want something different, Shadowrun is based off of the well known tabletop game, and the setting is cyberpunk fantasy. I'm familiar with the tabletop but I haven't played the Genesis game yet.

Lot of platformers on the Genesis. If you like pure platformers, then you know there's the Sonic series, for sure, but there's also a couple gems like Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Ristar.

I think the Genesis tends towards action platformers though. Both Shinobi games, Vectorman, and Rocket Knight Adventures are my personal picks.

Thanks! I've played a bit of Phantasy Star II on the Wii VC, but never finished it. Definitely liked what I played, though. Shadowrun sounds intriguing.

I love action platformers, as my Muramasa avatar might give away, so I'm looking forward to exploring those games!

Wonder Boy in Monster World.

NOW.

I actually have this on the PS3 but never played it, for some reason.

The trick is to keep upgrading the same color weapon. You can bump it up like 6 or 7 times.

If you lose it just turn it off and walk away.

was getting ready to cringe at the price, but it's cheap!

started a PS3 playthrough, but maybe i'll play it on the cart instead. or both...it's prettay good.
The genesis remasters have noticible input lag for me (on ps3 at least).

Going from genesis to the remasters is painful.

EWJ is one of those multiplat games that are better on Genesis, right? The SNES one has more detailed backgrounds, but the art is drawn at the correct aspect ratio on the Genesis version, as it was meant for 320x224.

Yeah, definitely better on the Genesis. It was the lead platform. Some people will tell you otherwise and tell you that the SNES version is better, but those people are crazy. The SNES version is even missing an entire level.

Sega CD version is better still, though. All of the pros of the Genesis version with some extra content and Redbook audio.

Also, it's one of the few cases where the SNES version of the soundtrack is pretty much inferior. Reason being, the bass sample they use is terrible, and kinda ruins many of the tracks by being horribly off-key.

Does it really have more detailed backgrounds? I think that's just a reference to the boss area in "What the Heck?".

Also, Sega CD version aside, I'd still argue the Genesis / Mega Drive version had the superior audio.

Actually, here's a decent video comparing the two:

They make some good points, but that was fucking painful to watch.

Surprised they don't mention the difference in display resolution. The SNES game looks so fat.

yeah, i repo'd Centy & MUSHA both (fuck those prices for the latter, i had that shit in the day!), the local dealer was marking shit down for larger orders and i wanted Pulseman & Wily Wars anyway. i'd love reprint manuals for em though.

At this point I think I'm going to set an ebay watch for repros of M.U.S.H.A. The ebay cost for the real cart is just insane now and the stories of people getting ripped off on this cart in particular are scaring me away.

Yeah I've watched a few of their videos. They can do some good comparisons when they actually get to the point, but they try really hard to be entertaining with the faux fanboy bullshit.

Finally got Popful Mail and Lunar II, have all the Sega-CD Working Designs games. Also got Operation Europe, complete with poster, for just 7 bucks

Agreed, but it was one of the few videos that was specifically about the subject at hand.

Pretty sure mine's in the case - tell you what, if you have the boring ol Sega-CD one i'll trade you bro

lol I cant find anything Jim related...except that PC version of the special edition...that wont work right with Windows 7. Well that and 2 on Saturn, but the music cemented that version for me :p

Got my Megadrive, Sonic 2, The Lion King, Ren and Stimpy, World of Illusion and some other sports stuff today. Missed this generation (owning) so I'm quite excited that I finally have my own Megadrive after...err...20 years?

Plan to mod it with the switches soon. Soon!

Unfortunately I have no space for a CRT TV...though plenty for an old flat Plasma haha.
