Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

They make some good points, but that was fucking painful to watch.
Hah, my thoughts exactly. My mind is kind of blown about the graphics though. Even though I've always kinda been #teamSega, when they showed the initial side-by-side comparison, I thought left was Genesis and right was SNES, since I assumed the better-looking, more colourful and less washed out graphics on the right would be the SNES version... turns out it was the other way around haha. Also had no idea they had censored a level. Too gory, apparently. xD

Only paid €2.50 + shipping! I didn't expect to win the auction and I think it was a steal at that price. The BIN auctions are at €60 or more and other auctions I've seen were a little higher as well.

Anyway, it's my first Genesis game. Cart and case look identical to PAL ones except for the Genesis logo of course. Now I just need a way to play the game :p

Finally got Popful Mail and Lunar II, have all the Sega-CD Working Designs games. Also got Operation Europe, complete with poster, for just 7 bucks

congrats man! local buddy sold me Lunar 1 (first print!) for $40, found 2 for $60 & called it a day there, in no hurry for Vay and Popful Mail is pretty up there at this point...what kinda deal you swing on that one?

I paid 200 bucks for Lunar 2, Popful Mail, on top of Grandia 2 and the first Evolution for Dreamcast

I loved that game when I was younger. Great strategy game. Started me off in a long line of "strategy games that I love but am actually terrible at and never finish"

Maybe you should give it another go if you still have the game :)

Today I remembered reading about early Genesis games not having region protection so on a hunch I just put the game in my MD and sure enough, it plays without a problem! I was convinced I needed a Genesis to play it. I wish it would work that way with all Genesis games but I know it was only with games until 1992 or something.

Yeah I bought the PAL version of Zero Wing and stuck it in my Genesis no problem.

I've got a Segazord. Is S-Video modding my 32x the only thing I need for the whole setup to put out S-Video? Also, does anybody know anyone that can do an S-Video mod on a 32x?

The Sega CD uses the Genesis for video processing (unless you're playing the 32X/Sega CD games) and the Genesis passes its video through to the 32X in RGB using the link cable, so yes. Well, the Power Base Converter doesn't work with the 32X, so there's that to consider.

I am also looking for a similar service, if anyone here can do it. I haven't asked at Sega-16 yet but if I find someone before you do, I'll let you know.

The 32X's native RGB looks gorgeous on my TV, but I haven't found an easy way to record anything higher than s-video off older consoles.

Yeah luckily I managed to buy an S-Video modded Master System so that's not a concern. Didn't get a Power Base Converter because I didn't want to swap my 32x and the PBC all the damn time.

I sent a message to him to see if he does mods if you provide the 32x as a donor. I'll let you guys know if I hear back.

nice. if i get lazy, i'd probably go that route.

picked up Pigskin Footbrawl and Xperts today, along with the Immortal yesterday.

Pigskin Footbrawl was $2.50, which I knew was an error...sure enough, it had a Joe Montana Sports Talk price tag on it. it normally sells for around $10, so not a huge difference, but for $5 I wouldn't have bought it. Razorsoft games are a special kind of trash.

Xperts is that action game with Shadow from Eternal Champions. it's lovely trash. I bought Death By Degrees (Nina from Tekken action game for PS2) yesterday...more lovely trash. I'm on a fighting game shitty spin off rampage. I want SF2010 as well, though that's not really shitty, it just has a stupid huge skill curve.

And the Immortal is just weird and kinda trash, but I wanna beat it. also, the game's dev budget went into gory (and quite well done) fatality animations.

He sent me a message back and quoted me $50, which included shipping.

If Mzo doesn't get a better price by checking on Sega-16 I may go that route.

Haven't heard anything back from the forum post. I'm going to contact some people personally and see what they say.

Well I think I'm finally ready to dive back in and pick up a new megadrive. Not sure where I'll hook it up at the moment (too many damn systems already) but I'm feeling an overwhelming urge for some bare knuckle.

I'm looking at cable options right now and my question is, since I'll be using this scart -> component transcoder here:
would it be a good idea to go for the more expensive custom raw sync cable (with signal booster) over the regular rgb? Is it a certain combination of scaler/md model that produces the jailbar effect, or is it pretty much ubiquitous for md rgb without raw sync?

Alternatively, you could track down an XMD-3. I have one, pretty swanky:
http://www.segagagadomain.com/hardware-mega/xmd-3.htm

That's pretty cool, but I wonder, would finding one of those things cost even more than a 32X mod would? I definitely wish I had better video output from my Genesis (2) -- the system's picture just isn't as good as the picture on my SNES or Turbografx+CD even though all three are hooked up via composite, and that's kind of annoying -- but a solution like that sounds pretty expensive...

Xperts might be in my top 3 of worst games I've played.

that just motivates me more to learn how to play it and beat it.

If you ever feel like going for the double whammy, there is another shitty, ambitious Eternal Champions spin-off for the Game Gear called Chicago Syndicate, based on the Larcen character. Its not much better.

It looks like it has the same "stubby limbs" problem. lol

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
The thing about Valis 3 that sticks out the most in my mind years later is the fact that the screen doesn't scroll until you're right next to the edge, preventing you from seeing more than a few steps ahead at a time.

How do you fuck up the camera in a 2D game?

Yep, they were Telenet's subsidiary in the West.

Don't forget Syd of Valis, Cobra Command, Road Avenger and Time Gal.

Rygar 8 Bit

Jaguar 64-bit
they published a ton of odd games not all of them are gems some have cool ideas that are just handled poorly like beast wrestler but they have a bunch of gems like gain ground, arcus odyssey and master of monsters not even going to bring up all the awesome shooters

WolfTeam had good intentions with action/platformers, the games are almost awesome (aside from some bonafide stinkers) but figured out their strong suit was in the 10 minute long anime cut scenes that open their games. I get so hyped watching those, then I start playing Valis and it's just kinda alright, but nothing special.

Not too surprising they went on to become the Tales team!

I'm planning on a Razorsoft collection.

FEATURING SUCH GREAT HITS AS:
Slaughter Sport (Mondu's Fight Palace)
Death Duel
TechnoCop
StormLord
Pigskin Footbrawl

should be cheap and quick lol

god, ive never played any of those but i have old issues of game players/etc where at least half of those were highlighted, sometimes for CONTROVERSY but they looked dope, despite how we know most turned out. it's a good effort man!

Oh man....StormLord was ok, but those other games...

I haven't though about Razorsoft in a long time.

Yeah Renovation is a publisher, not a developer. They localized many Wolf Team and Telenet games.

smh, vireland did all that work to get HudsonSoft to pony up for the Telnet backcataloge, and then all that effort is wasted because Konami doesn't care.

Did some Stormlord people work on Killer Instinct for X1? I remember that name dropping for a recent fighting game. Maybe that or Skullgirls?
