Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I am still debating if I should get Phantasy Star IV. I am not big on 16bit RPGs (I prefer plataformers) but should I get this classic? Its price was high some months ago and now it went lower a little bit. Is US$ 67 too much for it?

Game is awesome. I would think if you don't like 16bit RPGs, it's probably not for you, though.

That is a shit price. Here's a great looking complete copy on ebay for $45 shipped: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Phantasy-St...8668?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item3f2664c80c

The price is high due to the shipping costs to Brazil. My concern is that I will not have time to proper play it. I already have a huge backlog and my Genesis collection exists to revive some nostalgia in short play burts.

Okay, I have a 14 day return if it doesnt work, and just realized it did not come with an av adapter for Sega Genesis model 2/3 and 32x (I have a model 1) I just ordered one to arrive by the end of the week.

Is there any way to test if it is working without 32x games (May be a stupid question I am a noob with Sega stuff)

I put in Sonic 2 and it played fine connected via the 32x, I wasnt sure if the 32x had to be working in order for it to play genesis games?

You should be fine if Genesis carts are playing on the 32X. That would be highly unusual for the unit to be broken if you can do that.

I got one of the best gifts ever this weekend.

Crappy iPhone picture aside, this is the best looking TV I have ever played a Genesis on. As you can see off to the side, it will be just one retro system that I play on it. Best thing, and something I haven't tried yet? It has COMPONENT IN on it, which I will be using with a Wii to start. I own pretty much everything short of a Turbo Duo right now, so I am going to be in retro heaven!

I did not look at the model number. I was too excited just to play something on it to care. That photo is actually composite input with absolutely no tweaking at all. Fire Shark. Also, here's a .mov also from the phone of the Fire Shark attract screen. Air conditioner is loud...

CRT FTW!

I have to thank my coworker who has had this TV sitting around doing nothing for a couple years. My Trinitron quit about a month ago and it was very sad. I think a board inside is overheating on the old one/blown out. I am getting no picture on it whatsoever. Sad days. This friend didn't even ask for payment. Just gave it to me as he knew I would use it. He's a gamer too... a shooter fan... the real shooters, vertical and horizontal ones... and wanted this to have a good home.

Neo Geo AES tonight! Woohoo!

Thats pretty awesome, I wish I would have been into retro gaming two years ago, my grandparents had a really nice trinitron, but they got rid it for an lcd :(

Yeah CRTs are great. Since it has Component inputs it might be worthwhile to get an RGB cable and RGB->Component transcoder for a better image.

Watch craigslist. People give them away fairly regularly. I just picked up a 36" with the stand for free last week:

They are truly amazing looking. But, the 36" are insanely heavy and so big and bulky it makes them a serious pain to move. It took three of us, and it was still a struggle. I got a 32" also that was still heavy, but far more manageable. No way I'm ever dealing with another 36" again, that's for sure.

Yeah, this one is a 27 inch.. It's about the same size as my previous set but mine was curved while this one is completely flat. It's just awesome.

I will definitely look into RGB -> Component. The image quality even over composite is so insanely good for now that I am really happy.

Also... yes, so damn heavy. Two people can handle a 27 but it's not light. My older model also isn't built to be carried easily without being in the box. That always ticked me off. This one is way better in that respect, too.

Frankly, I will always stick with CRT as long as I can find one. It's just the way these things were meant to be played IMO.

I know this thread is mostly for collectors of old carts and stuff, but if you're interested in playing it (legally) as opposed to just collecting it, it's $1.50 on Steam right now. A completely ridiculous steal. :)

That, or get the Steam pack of Genesis classics 5, which includes PS4 with a bunch of other Genny classics for $3.75.

I already have it on Xbox 360. Yeah, this is mainly for collecting, but nothing beats playing the game on an original hardware. There is something like the "feeling" of the game.

I was asking because the price of the game was high in the last months, but I would not buy it just ot put it in a shell, at least I have to have the intention to play it.

I know what you mean, the feeling of putting the cart in and seeing the logo of either Sega or Nintendo or Rareware is just timeless and a beautiful thing,

How important is it that I get a Model 1 with the HD graphics text on it?

I keep missing out on them on ebay, and I can't believe they are going for $50 with shit games...

They have the best audio quality. Sega changed the sound chip shortly after they removed the "HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS" tagline from the consoles - a few with the good chip exist without the line, but they're uncommon.

If you're good with soldering or willing to find somebody who is, this one hacker came up with some circuitry to make later Geneses sound much better... "Crystal Clear Audio Mod", I believe it's called.

I got PSII and PSIV on ebay for the price PSIV usually goes for this week. I'm very happy. Though, I have to resell PSII at least it will lower my price even further. There are deals out there if you wait.

Its too much. I got PSIV in the original box...without the manual unfortunately, for like 24 bucks. Just look hard enough for most Genesis games, and you can find a good deal. Centy, Alien Soldier, or Musha...probably not :p

you don't gotta have that on it for the good sound chip, though...here's the guide you need, i should really put it in the OP if i haven't. you do need to see a pic of the back unit to make sure you get the better sound card!

Girlfriend bought me a pristine Megadrive as an early birthday gift. Knew I was looking for one.

Can't wait to get Toejam and Earl!

congrats man! also great avatar, haha

Got a few Genesis/CD things at the Seattle Retro Gaming Expo over the weekend.

Don't know much about Battlecorps, but I believe Core was a pretty good developer. Hope it's worth the $8. I've been meaning to add ESWAT to the collection, and was happy to find it CIB. Would really rather have Phelios CIB, but I'll settle for a $7 cart-only copy so's I can at least play it--another shmup, yay!

yeah, not familiar with corps but it looks like a safe bet...according to old sega stuff i find i'm one of the bigger fans of that ESWAT port/title, and that's a fair price for a loose Phelios too. you done good!

if we don't have a thread for it, we should make a Seattle retro con so ya'll can show off your goods & talk about any rarities seen there.

Was excited to get my disc-only Ultraverse Prime for the Sega CD, since the copy i got at work didn't have the game in the double pack with Microcosm. Sadly, the disc didn't work. Big letdown.

Thinks the Evil Empire is just misunderstood.
Trying to track down a Sega CD for model 2, but proving to be difficult. If anyone in this thread has one and wants to sell, pleas pm me.

Been after the same thing for months now. Any Sega CD though. Guess I have too high of a standard though since I want one with the the metal pieces, as well as the extender if it is a model 2, and an official 6 button controller. Missed one on ebay with all that in good shape for like $115 like a month ago and been kicking myself since.

Slow and steady, the collection grows and grows! (These are all CIB. Ignore the one Game Gear game, its the only one I've actually wanted, and to find it CIB for 2 bucks, it was like a dream come true. Now i have the complete Eternal Champions collection)

Seeing all the collection pics makes me want to post mine. I'm far too lazy to pull them all out and take pictures (there's a lot of loose carts) but here's a little chunk of my boxed favorites:

yeah, I got it in a big pack of games off ebay.

It took me 4 tries of cleaning it before the cart worked, too. Had me worried for a while.

I like when people post collections because it reminds me which games I don't own yet that I really ought to... like General Chaos and Mercs!

A few items that I saw:
Snatcher ($400!!! - don't think it sold, tho)
Turbo Duo
CIB JPN Mega Drive Altered Beast, which I'm kicking myself for not getting--waited too long and it sold. ;_; (Not really a notable rarity or anything, but I'm very fond of Altered Beast.)

Most of the stuff there was market priced or higher--a lot of vendors took to eBay to determine their pricing. Good deals weren't easy to find.

Battlecorps is a fantastic game.
Battlecorps kicks SO much ass.
Haven't had a chance to load it up yet, but sounds promising!

I have that SEGA guide, too!

Oooh, CIB SoR3, Adv of Batman & Robin, and Sunset Riders! Nice!

Bare Knuckle 3 is pretty good. Music's weaker than SoR2, but mechanically, it's about as fun.

Not so sure about Streets of Rage 3, which moved every difficulty level upward, and then added a "you can't really beat the game on Easy [previously Normal]!" early ending on top of it.
