Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Watch craigslist. People give them away fairly regularly. I just picked up a 36" with the stand for free last week:

They are truly amazing looking. But, the 36" are insanely heavy and so big and bulky it makes them a serious pain to move. It took three of us, and it was still a struggle. I got a 32" also that was still heavy, but far more manageable. No way I'm ever dealing with another 36" again, that's for sure.

That is my parents' living room TV right there. I would love to have it in my game room. I currently have a 26" or so Trinitron, which is also awesome, but those chunky pixels would look so good on the 36" beast.

I am still debating with myself if I should get Streets of Rage 3. It is expansive and I think it is the weaker of the series.
Yeah, I still like SoR2 more, but it's got some good variety. I have a beat-up cart-only copy. (I also got the JPN PS2 Sonic Gems Collection for the uncensored unlockable version.)

Bare Knuckle 3 is pretty good. Music's weaker than SoR2, but mechanically, it's about as fun.

Not so sure about Streets of Rage 3, which moved every difficulty level upward, and then added a "you can't really beat the game on Easy [previously Normal]!" early ending on top of it.

worst part is the Japanese version doesn't have the messed up difficulty and as a result is a much better game

Mechanically, I like BK3/SoR 3 the best of of the series. It's much faster thanks to the universal run, and additions like dodge roll and the non-punitive special attack improve the game for me. I know most people hate the soundtrack, but I don't mind it.

Awesome Possum CIB for 8 bucks off of ebay, free shipping. Seems like the game is going for 20 normally, but maybe i made a bad call. Anyone that can tell me whether i was a bone-head or not?

Finally found a good Genesis. SEGA-GAF, did I do good?

Much more Genesis goodness coming to the BackinmyPlay podcast.

(auction picture, I roll with a 32" Trinitron)

Better than mine if the reset button works :p

But yeah any High definition or Model 1 with that extra space in the back is a good one.

Shit... Now that I aquired a genesis I am hitting the eBay purchases hard.

Planning on only getting complete games. Is that a bad idea? Damage so far:

Sub Terreria (never played)
MERCS
Ghouls and Ghosts
Aladdin

That depends. Are you interested in the games to have them or to play them? If you want to play them, it doesn't really matter if they're complete or not.

On the plus side, with Genesis, the hard shell cases means it's a lot easier to find games in boxes than with other retro systems. The later cardboard boxes are just as tricky to get your hands on as with other systems though (and they're almost always crapped up inside when you do get them). Manuals are only slightly more common than other systems, so if you're looking for only complete with manuals, it can get expensive in a hurry.

Personally, I prefer to get games in boxes with manuals where I can, but I have a bunch of loose carts too, and they play just as well.

I try to get at least boxed, but i can live without manuals. I like having the collection personally, and i do intent to actually play everything. I will say, a complete Ghouls and Ghosts is a good game to get out of the way early, it can be pricey.

yeah, manuals are nice if you can get em but i don't pay extra, and printing out nice covers to put over some sports games' case is fine by me

then again i think you need to clip the hangtags to show they belong to you and not toys r us so there's that, haha

I guess I just wanted some of the games I wanted to play most and enjoy their boxart, complete.

I think I am good to go now, finished with:

  • Sub Terreria (never played)
  • MERCS
  • Ghouls 'N Ghosts
  • Aladdin
  • Mutant League Football Sega
  • Strider
  • Rocket Knight Adventures

Will hit up the flea market again this weekend and see if I can find some more stuff.

Kicking myself here, I completely forgot about the PS4 auction and missed a good deal for a CIB.

Well, I am kind of even more restrictive. Genesis is my favorite console from all time and I am trying to rebuild some old memories here. I am getting only CIB games, and in my concept CIB does not only mean with manuals, but also with the posters and flyers that came originally with the game. Yeah, sometimes I pay premium for it.

I still need to write down my whishing list, but I think I am half there in terms of games I want.

^man i picked up almost all of those in my hunt earlier this spring, great picks man! and yeah, i prolly saved a bit just jacking the boxes from cheap sports games & printing out the covers as nicely as possible.

EDIT: Also PS II guide arrived, thanks again!

I'll be on the look out for some extra Genesis cases for you guys.

I cracked open Battletoads and got some metal polish this week but I still could not get it to work. Those contacts look so sexy right now, so I'm pretty disappointed. I will likely just order a loose copy and replace the cart since my box and manual are in solid shape.

Of attainable games, my wishlist right now pretty much sits at Shinobi III, Rocket Knight and Strider.

If I can get Phantasy Star III for a decent price CIB I might but I heard it doesn't hold a candle to the other two Genesis iterations. And obviously I'd love to get some more grails like MUSHA and Grindstormer so I will continue to keep my eyes open. Might work on my Sega CD collection a bit from here on out.

I might be able to help with Rocket Knight, and maybe the other 2, if you don't need CIB games.

Also, MUSHA and Grind Stormer and pricey bastards.

Picked up a copy of Zombies Ate my Neighbors today at the local game shop for the Genesis. Surprised that I am enjoying it more than e SNES version. Look forward to debating it on this week's podcast.

I'll be curious to hear about that. 20 years now, I've assumed the SNES version was superior. The HUD doesn't take up a black bar on the side of the screen, for one thing. I assumed the colors and music quality are best on SNES as well....?

The Genesis version essentially requires a 6-button controller to be playable, too. But if you do have one, it's a perfectly solid version of the game, even if it doesn't look quite as nice.

had a pretty good garage sale this morning, mostly atari/NES/SFC but scored Sub Terrania, Columns and Beavis & Butthead for like $3 total on the Genesis side. dude was also a paramedic and was clearly a collector, i heard him talking to a buddy how he scored MUSHA complete for $150...man it's cool to hear people in the wild talking about MUSHA, haha

Yeah? I'll drop you a PM, I'm not too concerned with CIB or not at this point.

I should also add Mega Turrican to that list. I'm pretty content with where the collection is at now. Genesis titles look great on the shelf.

Been a lurker in this thread for months but figured it'd be a good time to post my Genesis stuff. The Genesis is definitely my favorite 16-bit console and thus I've bought most of the games I want for it. Theres a few obvious missing games like Shinobi III, SoR3.. but I wanted to get some of the hard to get stuff done first.

Currently using an old Hd-Graphics Model 1 with a Model 1 Sega CD. I do have a 32x but it doesn't fit in that shelve so I only hook it up when I want to use it.

Heres a picture of the games I own for the most part. Its a little old and theres a few missing that I just recently got (Crusader of Centy), I'd say my favorite part though is the custom cases I've been working on. I was always a fan of the gridline design and wanted to get my games to all have a uniform look. This is the result.

Heres a quick look at the front of some of them printed out.

I will say the best part of my sega stuff is definitely this. I am pretty good with electronics and saw that people were doing lcd swaps with the nomads, so I picked up a broken one on ebay for $25 put a new lcd in it and love the thing. Just gotta get a battery pack for it.

It's not too bad, it just comes down to soldering like the 2 or 3 little wires and the trying to get everything to fit back in the shell. I had the most fun trying to align the screen as I forgot to align it right the first time I hot glued it in place. You just have to be ready to do it as the old screen has to be out before the new one will even function. I was initially hoping when I did it that I could leave the old one in until I got the new one working just in case it didn't work.

The only annoying part about it is a small AV1 symbol that pops up in the upper right side of the screen I chose. It's only there for a few seconds though so only a minor inconvenience. The new screen just makes the Nomad such an amazing console. Like I said I wish I would get around to tracking down a battery for it. Would love to take it with me.

Nice work. Also reminded me that I need a copy of Phelios for my collection. (The list grows...)

The great thing about hot glue is that it's easy to re-align. Apply heat with hair dryer and shift.

Custom covers are nice, but it must be a pain to print them! Could you post that PSIV custom cover!?

Got a few more games:

Just picked these up today. All that talk of Elemental Master got me interested in picking it up. A TS game that I hadn't heard of, very nice! Looking forward to trying it out. Not bad CIB for 1490 yen.

I also picked up ROBO Aleste (Musha Aleste in Japanese) complete for the Mega CD for 1010 yen. Not bad. The MD/Genesis version is a lot more expensive, but I still want to pick that up as well.

Heres a thread I posted on another forum with my covers available to download. I believe that I have them size for UGC cases but it's not too much to resize them for Genesis cases.

Robo Aleste (Dennin Aleste) is actually sequel to MUSHA; they aren't the same game.
