True. I remember being happing getting "interactive cd-roms" in cereal boxes or together with magazines, but it didn't take me long to understand how crap they usually were.

I remember being in school, and there was a computer lab of "multimedia CD-ROM PCs" and Apple IIs... and the Apple IIs were much, much more popular. And Apple IIs were ancient even when I was a kid! Nobody bought into that nonsense. For kids and their shallow tastes, that's saying something.

how much are those marky marks? man theyd make awesome christmas presents!

yeah no one really bought it back then either, friends'd play Night Trap or Sewer Shark or whatever and it'd be right back to streets of rage or some SNES shit over here. diving into some turbo CD content, it's obvious that the standout content from this era was devs who just took a tried & true formula and asked what the medium could add, as far as digital music/cutscenes etc, like Rondo of Blood.

and when done right, it was mind-blowing for me at the time. the first time you hear Ghaloen's clapping/re-entry into Lunar 2 sent shivers down my spine, that was something games didn't/couldn't do before.

Haha, it's fun thinking back on it now.

Keeping on topic, anybody own any of the Mega Drive variations?

About $15 apiece. Clearly not worth anything other than the gag... and is $15 enough for a moment of lulz? dunno :p

I had that friend who I played Sewer Shark with... and looking back on it now, I'm pretty sure it was for the irony. We never respected it.

I don't think I had that "good" console multimedia moment back in the day (just Sonic CD's music). I never played the Lunars... in another life, I'm sure I would have been hooked, because I love jRPGs and their cinematics.

The earliest "good" multimedia gaming moment I can remember now is Warcraft II's opening cinema.... but perhaps there were others.

Haha, it's fun thinking back on it now.

I know! What a moment in time. Unbridled enthusiasm for multimedia couldn't have extended much beyond 1992-1993. By 1994 I think most of us had fallen back in love with cartridge games, and waited for the real games that just happened to have multimedia features.

I loved my Genesis. I got one when Sonic 1 came out and was bundled with it. I was a weird kid and never asked for Christmas gifts until I was like 14 but I remember really wanting a Genesis but not expecting it to be possible because like a year or do before I got a NES and it seemed like expensive gifts in that short a time span was unlikely. Anyways I opened up a small box from my dad and it was Streets of Rage (which was super awesome because my mom already didn't like how much I played super violent gun game Duck Hunt and the SoR cover was a dude jump kicking someone in the face). My first reaction was, "man, I don't even have a Genesis" but then I noticed a huge box off in a corner that wasn't there the night before and I bolted over to it and the rest is history. Even as a kid I was pretty laid back and subdued but that's like the only time in my life I remember being so happy that I was jumping around and screaming.

I loved the headphone jack on it. Our tv was really crappy mono only audio but I could plug into that jack and blast my ears out in stereophonic bliss. My family was kinda poor so I didn't have many games for it but I had and loved... Sonic 1-3, Streets of Rage 1-3, Mercs, NBA Hangtime, and Ranger X.

Such a great read, I liked that part. Kind of the same story for me, only I had a Master System 2, only had a few games but loved them so much! The jackplug on the MD was something I envied MD owners, such a great thing to have when you wanted to play after sleeping hours too.

Wait till you get to the later stages. Also Sparkster vs Axel is one of the better duels this side of devil may cry and god hand.

Got a few CIB games this week:

Surprised at how good Fatal Fury 2 is. It even uses the 6-button controller's Mode button for taunts.

Jumping on the Sub Terrania bandwagon. Haven't played it yet, but some Youtube vids have me excited.

And I finally got a complete copy of Crack Down! Can't wait to play co-op.

Some have said that Fatal Fury 2 on genesis is better than the original due to the changes to (or introduction of) a combo system.
Also heard that the genesis version is better than snes in this case, as well.

Fuck yeah, finally was able to pick off a Sega Cd with the model 1 extender and plates. Didn't have the two smaller rf shields though, but was getting tired of waiting. Time to hope it doesn't come in crap condition.

Box art and the letter are the only things that are different. The Cart label and instructions are the same as the other version. It was $3.99 so i couldn't pass that up.
I think that's one of the most bizarre gaming-related things I've ever seen. I think I still like the original manual image more though. But I'd take any CIB version of Raiden Trad over my cart-only copy. lol

Loved RKA. Got it when I was a kid just because the character on the box art was somewhat like Sonic. IMO one of the best games for the Mega Drive.

I've got the X-Eye, and it's my preferred model 'cause the Sega brand wireless controller receiver fits in the front. Doesn't fit in the CDX because of its odd shape.

Kinda on that that topic: Does anybody know which models of Genesis have the same superior sound quality as the original? I know the model 2 doesn't...

On another note, I randomly won an auction for 10 Mega Drive games for 1000 yen. There was no picture though and nothing in the description except saying that they were 10 games. I don't know what games they are and if their are any boxes or anything with them. With shipping it should be less than 1500 yen, so roughly 150 yen per game is worth taking a gamble on...I guess I'll have to see what I get.

Well the guy was a bit slow to respond and stuff, but I finally got the games today. Ended up costing about $2 per game. All of them are CIB, so not bad. I only owned 3 out of the 10, which is pretty good. Some of them I had already wanted to pick up, so that was nice. Anyway, not too bad on my gamble.

Shining Force 1, Shining Force 2, Shining in the Darkness, Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Vermilion.

Phantasy Star 2, Puyo Puyo, Super Hydlide and Virtua Racing.

Well deserved appreciation thread for the Mega Drive/Genesis.

Very first home console played this and my Game Boy to death in my youth and I give the Mega Drive a lot of credit for my fascination with gaming :)

*high five* Genesis and Game Boy were my first two systems as well.

Years ago someone gave me a genesis but sadly they didn't have any of the cables to go along with it. After digging it up recently and looking what I had, I decided that I would get all the cables and controllers I needed to start playing. So I ordered some things from amazon and have now gotten sucked into my genesis!

My lady friend and I have been playing the only game I own, Sonic 2. But it turns out one of my buddies had a stack of games he no longer wanted to own. So he just passed them on to me! I'll have to get it all together and take some photos to post.

But, I have a few fighting games now and I started looking into 6-button controllers. I also saw that there is an arcade stick option too. Which would be the better investment for fighting games, the arcade stick or the 6-button controller?

edit: also, are there any new non sega 6 button controllers worth getting, or are used originals the best? I saw one by gtron on amazon that has mixed reviews.

Original Sega 6 button.

The 3rd party 6-button controllers blow.

The one I have has sharp edges and the buttons rattle horribly.

I keep checking my local thrift store in vain, hoping to one day stumble upon a six-button Genesis pad amongst all the electronics.

I've scored a Model 2 Saturn pad from there and I still see Genesis pads in there somewhat often, so I dunno, it might happen one day.

Keep trying, you never know. It might take awhile, but there will be one there one day. Try to have multiple spots you check though.

Only thing missing is that sweet, sweet mode button.

The only 6 button pads I've been able to find locally are all from this weird hill billy thrift store and they all had weird problems. I basically cannibalized most of them and reconstructed a franken-6 button pad, The only thing to do to make the one I'm using perfect is to clean up/wear in the A button a bit (it's a bit sticky) and try to lube up the D-Pad a little bit better.

Only problem is I'm not sure what kind of lubricant to use on the pad =/ If anyone has any recommendations I'd love some.

I know this is an incredibly long shot...but figure its worth a try.

Anyone still need High Seas Havoc in the original case and have an extra copy of Sparkster (any condition is fine)?

Really want Sparkster, but im also still looking for Ranger X, Comix Zone, Vectorman, or Earthworm Jim 1, either with original case/box.

Surprised at how few of the genesis Sparksters I've seen, Didn't realize how rare it was, yet still not super expensive.

I have never seen Sparkster out in the wild. But Rocket Knight I've come across somewhat regularly at shows/conventions/shops.

I got mine from amazon. The guy was selling it cheap because the manual had the cover loose.

I bought it and fixed the manual!

So, i went out for the weekend for vacation, and of course took a look at Sega stuff at the stores and places around. Ended up getting a bunch of common stuff, but i got:

Heavy Nova
Wacky Worlds (/w mouse)
Buck Rogers
NFL Quarterback Club (32x)
Wheel Of Fortune (Sega CD)
Star Wars Chess (Sega CD)

Buck Rogers CIB was probably the only real mind-blowing find.

Something I've always wondered: why is the "GENESIS" bar on that Barney game blue instead of red? I know said bar was blue in the case of European Mega Drive boxes, and that it was a greenish blue for Sega CD longboxes (also purple for Game Gear boxes, but that's not hugely relevant), but that's definitely an NTSC-U Genesis game, and it has a blue bar.

I want to say "well, it's because it's educational, obviously!" But I have a Magic School Bus game for the Genesis, similarly educational (also pretty fun; underrated game, that). Its bar is red, like every other Genesis game featuring such a bar - except Barney. I don't get it.

I believe 32X Doom uses it for something. Weapon selection, I think?

I hear that's a pretty good game. Can't personally vouch for it, as I have yet to power it up. Too many games. . . ;_;

I was surprised, too, when I recently found out it has in-game uses! Apparently Battlecorps (SEGA CD) and several 32X releases made us of it, as well.

I brought my Nomad with my so i could test my normal games, and its cool so far. It very much feels like a PC-ported game, but it works surprisingly well, and the 100-page manual does a really good job of giving you all of the lore. Definitely one of the better RPG games i've played on the system.
