Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Some of our games had both portrait and landscape manual variants. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap on Master System.

Speaking of which, do we have a Master System thread? It needs some love!

Clockwise here, for the reason mentioned above that it's how the game were when new.

Honestly, it never even occurred to me that I could put them in the other way!

Clockwise. It matches the logos that appear right next to them in most of the cases, and just looks better.

Gotta have those logos match the cartridge! You don't want them butting heads, do you?!

Clockwise. Feels easier(?) to pop it out and plug it in.

...yeah.

Yeah, it feels faster and more natural to remove for me.

Ocean (Tidal Surge) from Vector Man is a particiularly hot track as well. Shame the thing is so pricey, I have to tap out lol. Good luck to the rest of you!

Finally did it, and legit too! Those final special stages are nuts...especially with Tails diving face first into bombs.

Man...back when Super Sonic was an actual reward as well as a plot device.

^fuckin props! i never could do that with tails fucking the last one up for me, you must've been crazy patient & lucky, haha

lol i definitely had to put the controller down for awhile and go do something else. Took like 3 zones to get that last emerald. Was even "coaching" tails (yelling at the TV...only games that make me do this are old school, fighting games, Souls series, and Dragon's Dogma lol).

you could just play without tails

I've never done it with Tails. First thing I do is turn him off.

I didnt have the heart :p

EDIT: The early Sonic games are all great, and still hold up after going back to them...but Wing Fortress Zone? Its just not fun at all. And the music seems out of place compared to everything else. I know they were going for a more big orchestra epic dogfight theme...but it just sounds annoying.

Hope you enjoyed getting stuck in the bottom of a pit in mystic caves.

Man, Popful Mail is a cool game, but some of these bosses are bullshit.

More than anything it's frustrating how you can't skip the dialog after reloading your save. =/

I could deal with every other boss. But this guy... This guy.

This Ahnold motherfucker was definitely the reason I made that comment, lol.

Having him charge or shoot his projectile while he's offscreen and you can't dodge it.... GRRRRRR!

Plus he was directly after the also difficult Mythril Guardian, and there was no shop in between so you would have had to have had enough healing items for both of them.

And then it finally gives you a item shop after him. But then the next boss is stupid easy!

Wht would ever wanna skip dialouge like that?! Also, i still havent started this game yet, got to get through Lunar first

The guy is hilarious, and I think it's a nice touch that the dialog will change depending on which character you talk to people as (him included).

But I had to retry this dude at least 10 times, and the dialog can take a couple minutes to get through.

Edit: Here his is in the game.

Just bought the Alex Kidd & Co. from xbla. I mainly wanted it for Super Hang-On and The Revenge of Shinobi.

Still trying to get the hang of Super Hang-On but I really like Shinobi. Can't decide if I like it more than Shinobi III tho.

I blame it all on Working Designs. Did they tinker with the difficulty in this game as well as add their usual soul-cringing dialogue? Probably.

edit: looked it up. They sure did.

Both games are great, but I personally like Revenge more.

I actually like the dialogue here. =(

Same here

Also, tip on easy way to beat him:
If you have Mail's boomerang weapon, you can drop down on the staircase so that you're below the floor level. He can't hit you and you can direct your boomerang to hit him. It takes a bit of, but its easy and you'll not be forced to be in any hurry because you can just stand there and recharge your weapon.

I'm finalizing a shopping list for Japan-only games and wanted to ask what you guys think the best picks are for Mega Drive (and Mega CD and Saturn and Dreamcast). Games with significant regional differences or significantly lower prices in Japan are also welcome.

I've already got Puyo Puyo 2, Alien Soldier, and Yu Yu Hakusho. Monster World IV and Bare Knuckle III are on the list. Battle Mania 2, Pulseman, and Rockman are too much for me to bother with at the moment. Battle Golfer Yui and/or Cutie Suzuki Ringside Angel will be tossed in for cheap laughs if I have enough leftover in the deposit to cover it.

I'm going through a courier service for Yahoo JP Auctions (unless I happen across anything for significantly less on eBay), so I want to try and knock out as many items as possible in one order to save on shipping.

well, it's settled. everyone but Mzo's appreciates WD localization & adding zany dialogue to mostly boring NPC's.

I haven't played many WD efforts, but they sure as hell ruined Silhouette Mirage.

Keio Flying Squadron is waaaay cheaper for the JP version. Average game at best tho.

Damn, I was never able to legit unlock Super Sonic. Well done.

Back when 100%ing a game actually resulted in something awesome being unlocked. The Mario games are the only games today I can think of that still reward you in some way (kick ass final stage).

It's probably only because I lived and breathed Sonic circa 1992, but I can still do those special stages with relative ease, with or without Tails.

Super Sonic ruins the game anyway.

Especially when you accidentally jump with more than 50 rings after clearing the stage, triggering Super Sonic at the wrong time, causing the game to bug out and leave you with a walking-in-mid-air Sonic by the end panel, effectively soft-locking the game.

Thats EXACTLY what happened to me at Metropolis Act 1!

I'm more surprised that no one related to being stuck at the bottom of a spike pit in mystic caves till you ran out of coins. Just waiting there with no way out.

Probably because Sonic doesn't have coins :V

I love what they did with that pit in the mobile remakes, though.

Ugh, they're the worst.

You guys can all jerk off around your Star Search, Price is Right and Bill Clinton references.

THE GAMES DON'T EVEN TAKE PLACE ON EARTH I HATE IT

oh yeah, i never did get to play that one but when Mzo laid out the changes for me, it sounded broken as fuck. for my own weird tastes ill defend their wacky localizations here & there but that shit is objectively inexcusable.

is it? hmm...ive had the region stuff explained to me for Sega-CD several times and i never quite get it.

aw they're not super-common and while they shatter the 4th wall to bits, another take is that they really make the time capsule thing for me, that was Lunar's era you know? mind you, Albert Odyssey may be the worst offender ive yet played, haha

Every time I hear the "picked up a ring" sound emanating from a gas-station cash register and am fairly certain no one knows where that sound effect is from makes me feel that way.

oh man i am so glad i'm not the only one this happens to

This reminds me, is there such a glitch where you can get Sonic to bounce forever back and forward off spikes? The game also has glitched out time and score if I remember right. I went to a museum exhibition once with videogames through the ages and every time I saw Sonic 2 it was stuck on this, so I assume people were doing it on purpose as a joke.

Sega CD hardware is the same for all countries. All you really need is a cart that will let you boot up a different BIOS. I've heard some troublesome games refer back to the attached Genesis and do a region check before running but I've yet to run into one. The Mega Cart people might just have been covering their asses.

That's just Debug Mode; the score gets replaced with your coordinates (in hex) and the time gives information on how many sprites are on screen, IIRC. You can't die from being hit by enemies or spikes in Debug Mode, although they can still put you in your pain state.

In addition, Sonic [1] has the dubious distinction of being the only Sonic game where landing on spikes while in your pain state overrides any mercy invincibility you'd normally get, allowing them to combo you to death. This is not a bug, apparently - it was deliberately coded to do this. I guess people complained, considering Sonic 2 onward (and I think some revisions of Sonic [1]) force spikes to use mercy invincibility like everything else in the game. Early installment weirdness, really, kinda like how spikes instakill you in the first Mega Man even if you're in mercy invincibility, while in Mega Man 2 onward they only instakill you if you're not in mercy invincibility.

Anyway, combine your Debug Mode invulnerability with that spike combo death setup, and what you get is Sonic uncontrollably bouncing around back and forth as he lands on spikes, gets sent to his pain state, pain state lands him on more spikes, gets sent to his pain state again in another random direction, lather, rinse, repeat.

What did they do?
That'd ruin the surprise!

Just did an S-video mod on a model 1 Genesis and man what a big difference. Played through Sonic 3 twice the last few night with composite and seeing this game and others in S-video is awesome. The clarity is so much better over composite. I am use to S-video with other consoles but man what world of difference this makes when added to a Genesis.
