Whats the big deal about texting in a theater? I've had to whip out my phone a few times while watching movies and spend 10 secs to text someone real quick. Does that really bother people? Heck, I even try to shield the phone from everyone around me so no one will even see my trying to text.
I carry a flashlight with me, and I sometimes turn it on in the middle of a film; only for fifteen seconds, or so, you understand. I usually shine it toward my face. Where's the harm?

Worst I've dealt with is someone behind me having to explain the movie to someone else, the whole entire way through the film. Oh and people bringing babies to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Nice to see a theater with the decency to actually kick them out. Unless it is an emergency, keep your fucking phone turned off during the movie. If you cant survive for 2 hours without looking at your phone, dont go to the movies.

I asked because I've never been to this place, but I can't imagine other drafthouses making a big deal about texting when it gets rather noisy from the whole drinking and dining setting to begin with.

It isn't noisy.

It really isn't noisy.

If any GAF memebers are ever near an Alamo Drafthouse, I suggest you see a film there. Quite the experience, perfect environment for film buffs.

Man, I miss Austin.

Damn some of y'all are sensitive as hell. I never text during a movie but I don't see how it could bother you if it's on silent.

Once again missing the point for 100 alex. It's the screen brightness.

well noisy only relative to a normal theater? and visually distracting with the movement around you.

Also, yeah if only one person opens their phone and texts for a second over the course of the entire movie, who's gonna really notice or care. But if there's no policy at all and it's a full house, what you get is:

*blink*

*blink *blink* *blink*

*blink blink*

I would think so, I'm all for quiet nazis in most theaters, but I never thought it got like this in drafthouses...

No, its pretty damn quiet.

I don't think I've ever been bothered by someone around me pulling out his/her cellphone to text during a movie as much as some of you here seem to have been bothered. If I'm engrossed in a movie, a cellphone light won't come close to distracting me.

To each his own, I suppose.

Just because you aren't bothered doesn't mean other people aren't. Depending on where you're seated, this bight light just in your peripheral vision can be the most annoying thing in the world.

There's a reason theaters tell people not to text during movies. If it's that important, just exit, text, then come back.

No. Normal theater is noisier in my experience.

The movement isn't distracting as the theater has been built to accommodate a recessed row for servers in-between rows of seats. No one ever has to walk in front of you.

Particularly enjoy people in a group texting to each other.

Guy texts.

Girl three seats down texts.

Guy texts again.

Girl texts again.

Another girl two seats over texts, and giggles.

... All in the space of two minutes. No, that's not distracting at all.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most belligerent possible voice mail ever, that's like a 3.

I like the Alamo Draft House, but this really falls flat. They reaaaallly had to dress that voice mail up with text to make it appear remotely amusing. And texting in the movies ranks pretty low on both the list of movie theater annoyances and antisocial texting behavior. So it's really hard to want to pile on to this woman too much.

Texts during movies

Fuck anyone who pulls their phone out. protip: Your super bright 4 inch screen IS A MAJOR DISTRACTION.

Edit: I dont get why theaters dont have the brains to build their damn screening rooms so cells dont work. Instead of making your building out of toothpicks and cardboard, throw in some steel, bricks and concrete.

Problem solved. No reception means no texting or calls.

But people walking in and out of the theatre is distracting!!!

The light on cell phones is the worst part about movie-texters. Much more annoying was, at the showing of X-Men I went to on Saturday, the guy sitting behind me felt the need to narrate the about 1/3rd of the movie.

You know how the stereotyped black woman calls back to the movie screen, "Oh no sister, don't go that way!", this guy did the EXACT SAME THING.
"Oh shit, she's not friendly!"
"THAT'S THE SAME DUDE FROM THE NAZI CAMP!"

... he actually said "pew pew" when whatshisface was tossing energy rings. I almost laughed at that.

Well, sure. If you were bothered by other people texting, presumably you wouldn't do it yourself. Since it doesn't bother you, it makes it harder to understand that it bothers others.

Suffice to say it does bother some people, and this theater is for those people.

oh Arlington? I didn't know they were related. Cool, but I think that one doesn't do new releases, unless I'm thinking of a different one entirely.

I HATE texters in movies. The phones are SOOO bright it immediately distracts.

However...

I do very much appreciate it when douchbag texters at least cover up their phone when they get a text. I give you one free pass (meaning turn that shit off after the first text) and assume you learned.

What I hate worse is people who bring children to R-Rated movies, or violent action loud ass movies. I got into a screaming match with a guy I work with over this because he told me him and his wife were taking their newborn baby to the last twilight premiere.

His excuse was that he didn't have a babysitter to which I replied. "Then stay hope dumbass"

Winchester - seems to play current movies from what I can get to load up

I don't see the big deal about the light from the phone Sheeeesh, as long as the sound is off am good, people complain about insignificant things in this world, it's so fucking pathetic. I hate the morons who bring babies to the movie theater, I actually cause a big augment over that and they had to stop and restart the movie i got kicked out but i also got my money back and never went back to the movie theater....

This video makes me wish either

A) I had an Alamo Draft House theater locally

or

B) My local theaters had this rule.

What's even worse is when part of a group comes in and sits down, then the rest of their group show up in the theater and yell to their friends to find out where they are sitting. Basically, if you are going to be loud/distracting in a theater, do the rest of us a favor and watch something at home.

Why can't people not text somebody for 2 hours? That's my question. I doubt the people texting (especially this dumb chick) are doing it for emergency reasons. The light IS distracting.

They don't allow kids in the drafthouse.

People are pretty damn good here in England, you do get the odd moron female who can't not text or, like my friend, some whipped little bitch who can't not text his girlfriend back instantly for fear of being reprimanded. I actually snatched his phone out of his hands during Inglorious Basterds.

Not entirely true. Kids under 18 can come in if they're with an adult. Very young kids though are not welcome and they have specific daytime showings for parents who want to bring babies.

Sounds nice. I keep running into the parent crowd that not only wants to bring the little ones to movies, but at like 9 at night, what is up with that.

Special curtains can do this, and some theaters are testing it now. They act a a faraday cage to block/scramble incoming/outgoing signals. And it is awesome. No bars unless you exit the screening room.

I agree with the theater. I would have complain about a girl texting in a next to me: lights is disturbing. I mean, you pay for an experience in a theater. having a bright light or clicketing buttons mashing randomly is not a good experience.

Sounds like a self-righteous prick. I agree with a lot of positions that are espoused by pricks.

Hate it when someone whips out their phone during a movie. It immediately distracts me from what's going on.

Self entitled assholes are everywhere. Wish there were less.

People using their phones during a movie is really fucking distracting. I was watching x-men the other day and the people beside me were texting for half the movie. They may not think it's a big deal because it's not making noise, but the bright light is really annoying and distracting.

It's fine that it doesn't bother you. Consider yourself lucky. But think of it this way...

Having some people texting during a movie doesn't bother you, but does bother others. Nobody texting during a movie doesn't bother you either, and doesn't bother others. In the latter scenario, everyone gets to enjoy the movie.
