Silent Hill 2 |OT| You promised you'd take me there again someday...

Let's not forget (or if you're hearing this for the first time) that Silent Hill didn't have a canon ending until Silent Hill 3 (and even then there's been debate over which version of that ending is canon). Unfortunately after SH3 the series started to nosedive and never really pulled up until this remake so answers just didn't happen (and people cared less with each entry). As an aside I believe Shattered Memories takes place in a universe where the bad ending of SH1 was canon. Which completely contradicts the ending required for SH3 to even happen.

Silent Hill was, and still is, convoluted and crazy. You have to piece together stuff and read into vague references from other games to get answers that come with caveats. As frustrating as that may be, it drove community discussion and kept the fandom alive even after Konami shit the bed.

Tbf, The other silent hill games have cheesy plots about cults and demons from what i remember, not exactly deep or thoughts provoking...

Sh2 is kinda of a unique specimen even inside sh saga, with a much more adult, bleak plot, this is why i don't care if harry or heather have different endings, the plot is deep as a puddle and the protagonist not even close to the complexity of james, i didn't cared at all about the plots in these games but i'm constantly thinking about sh2 plot, the game just hits different.

The original SH was about a cult and demons, it was just set up with less on the nose Hollywood cheese as the later games.
There, he meets Dahlia Gillespie, a cultist, who gives him the Flauros, a charm she claims can counteract the darkness spreading through the town. Harry leaves the church and investigates the hospital, where he encounters its director, Dr. Michael Kaufmann, who is bewildered by the sudden changes in the town. Harry also discovers a frightened, amnesiac nurse named Lisa Garland hiding in one of the rooms. While investigating the hospital, Harry begins to question his own existence, wondering whether he is already dead and everything is happening in his mind. Harry asks Lisa to come with him, but she feels she must stay in the hospital.[9][10][11][12]

Harry can later rescue Kaufmann from a monster, discover evidence of his involvement in local drug trafficking, and find his hidden bottle of aglaophotis, a supernatural liquid that can exorcise demons.[13] Harry meets Cybil again and comes to believe that a darkness is transforming the town into someone's nightmare, causing the inhabitants to disappear. Cybil suspects that Dahlia might be under the influence of drugs. Dahlia urges Harry to stop "the demon" responsible—the girl on the road who appears sporadically—or Cheryl will die.[14]

Silent Hill 2 is a different part of the town with some focus on the backstory
While not focusing on the characters and plot threads of the first Silent Hill game, Silent Hill 2 takes place in the series' namesake town, located in Maine.[5][6] Silent Hill 2 is set in another area of the town,[7] and explores some of Silent Hill's backstory.[5] As opposed to the first game where the monsters and environments were a real manifestation, and everybody could see what was happening, this time the town draws upon the psyche of its visitors and ultimately forms alternative versions of itself, which differs depending on the character; thus, Silent Hill 2 acts as more of an internal representation of a person's guilt or demons.[c][8] The concept behind the town was "a small, rural town in America"; to make the setting more realistic, some buildings and rooms lack furnishings.[11]
Alternate versions of itself, which differs depending on character. Hence the non-committal ending and being "lost in translation" when they convey that, me thinks.

Incredible game

Spent my sweet time with it, around 25 hours clocked on Steam, got in the water ending.

Probably my GotY and I am getting slightly sad, that these games, they don't really make them anymore.

Props to Blooper, but if you played their games, you know that they are probably only team who could pull this off. The Silent Hill vibes were always present in their games.

easy 10/10

My exact thoughts, and it IS sad. Hopefully developers stop chasing the GAAS shit and focus on these experiences. Fat chance but I can dream.

Ah okay, I see what you're saying now. I don't really think they mean the joke endings are canon, unless the wackiness of Silent Hill does have a dark sense of humor as well.

This is what stemmed my comments from the post before. I would like to think he’s being tongue in cheek that it’s not one he considers cannon but if a player wants to then go ahead… which stems back to the fart huffing and idiotic comments.

The de facto statement should be all the endings BUT alien and dog should be canon.

"If you think so, then it definitely will be so." Plays right into the theme of the entire plot of the town in SH2.

If you mean a more straight-forward survival horror experience and not SH in general, definitely check out the new Alone in the Dark. SH2 is more impressive across the board but AITD is solid as hell. Melee too even considering the complaints, just gotta stick and move. Feels much more sluggish than SH2 remake but its totally fine once you accept it for what it is.

There is nothing complex about James. He's searching for his dead wife that he clearly knows is in the back of his car/trunk. (Confirmed by Ito) Not only that but his fears/projections are that of sex and death which is the most cliche plot of a story. What makes Silent Hill 2 interesting is the way it tells the story. Alessa's nightmare was projected on the town caused by The Cults influences on Silent Hills Spiritual Power. This is why the events of SH2 and SH4 are able to happen.

True but I think both james and the plot are still more complex and thought provoking than muh cults and demons.
Sh1 making sh2 possible doesn't change that.

I look at SH2's horror as being internal vs. most other horror games being external. James' soul and psyche are on the line, or already gone, where in other games your temporary physical body is. It doesn't change the act of playing the game itself obviously but the crux of that makes SH2 a lot darker to me. Returnal did the same and doubled down on the "you don't actually get to die, just keep living your personal hell over and over" element and accidentally created probably the most psychologically fucked up and scary game.

Those games are Old Testament sin and eternal punishment but the effectiveness of that depends on the consumer way more than the more universal horror of the external imo. For me, this stuff is the scariest shit I can think of so it works way above and beyond zombies, necromorphs and so on.

Patch is out. Fucking finally.
Nice. I'll probably finish it this weekend.

Off topic but man, this has been such a fantastic Hallowern season for me. Weather has been fantastic, SH2 remake is a joy to play, been revisiting other SH games and titles in the Fatal Frame series, watching horror movies, seeing the fall colors with leisure drives and hikes. So damn cozy! :messenger_sunglasses:

Bruh, youre just gonna conpletely ignore the psychological masterpiece SHATTERED MEMORIES. Have you forgotten the warning at the beginning of the game?? "THIS GAME PLAYS YOU....JUST AS MUCH AS YOU PLAY IT"

Yes, im being facetious, I hate that game, lol.

Shattered memories was real good. The story is at least as good as SH2, maybe even better. The game also understood that silent Hill is scariest when you’re not killing the enemies. SH2 remake teaches you how to kill with a very first enemy and doesn’t let you run away.

Shadows of the Damned on the 31st too. Perfect way to cap it all off. More Yamaoka godliness.

Im really curious about that. I still have the PS3 version but i gotta be honest, i never really enjoyed the game. The script was really off putting to me and im by no means a prude. Been meaning to revisit it to see if my opinion would change. Glad its being rereleased all the same though. If the game isnt censored, people are going to be lose their minds over it, lol.
