Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

Sony wins, game over.

I would say so far its the best conference but it was nothing spectacular imo.

One thing though, which I found weird, was the crowd cheering for the weirdest things.

For instance apparently the white PS4 bundle got a massive uproar in cheer both in the conference and theatres.

I know guys, white PS4 is superior but damn

I think, overall, that Sony is in a way better place than Microsoft.

Microsoft's big problem is that there are no first-party new IPs. Even a game like Project Spark is now riding the wave of another IP. And there's nothing else. They outlined there plans. Sequels, token japanese game, Halo HD and indies. Their long-term plans were Gold subscriptions and TV, neither panned out as they'd planned.

Sony has Project Morpheus and PlayStation Now. They're commited to expanding to markets and new forms of revenue. They're also commited to free-2-play. If anything they're thinking very long term. We'll see how well they do in these areas. If it goes great it'll be the next Wii. If it fails we can't blame them for not trying. Now they just need to stimulate the developer community.

Zombie games are popular and people love them. That's why they always do well. People exploded in my theater when Dead Island 2 came up. You guys should be more positive. It was refreshing watching this conference in the theater without all the negativity.

Show them dead island one then. If the game manages to run then be excited. Otherwise abandon all ye hope all who buy games from that developer.

If they had stopped the conference after 60 minutes I think I would have given it a solid 9/10. After that stupid part in the middle though... and nothing to blow us away after "the break", 7.5/10.

Grim Fandango though, god damn that was random - and extremly welcome!

I dont agree with you there. MS have as much varied games overall then Sony, if not more (since they have a fighting exlcusive, a racing sim and a racing arcade, aswell as shooters, actions and rpg).
Sony already had that. Guilty Gear Xrd is a PS3/PS4 fighting exclusive. Rime, The Witness, DriveClub, etc are games we know about that weren't at the show. That's the thing. You can create a "bubble narrative" where Microsoft won or had a better show because of this or that, but in the real world where things outside of a 90-minute stage presentation are still taken into account, Sony is coming from a position of strength and as far as I'm concerned, Microsoft's showing didn't change that even a tiny bit. Microsoft this year certainly did better than Microsoft 2013, but where is this show-stopping MIcrosoft that was supposed to sway the tide in their favor? They did not show up.

I have to go against the crowd and say I prefer Sony's presentation method, MS felt like a post-conference highlights reel, especially with the banners at the beginning of each video "Only on Xbox", "exclusive content first on Xbox" etc...

It seems some people hate people talking, but Keighley and Tretton touched on it after the MS presentation that we didn't get to connect with any of the MS team.

sony:
content: 6/10
presentation: 3/10

microsoft:
content: 7/10
presentation: 7/10

both conferences were really long and had a couple parts where people stumbled over themselves ('featules'). i give microsoft the edge on content for purely personal reasons. their lineup is more varied and as a result resonates with me more, while sony's feels largely one-note aside from lbp3 and the promise of a remake of ratchet & clank. entwined and grim fandango also look neat, but nothing seemed to be backed up with as much passion as something like sunset overdrive.

there were a lot more things during sony's conference that should have been shortened for time. they have three platforms that are all getting exclusive games and they focused on only one audience. instead of showing a breadth of titles, they only appealed to one style, and that became extremely boring as the conference wore on. more than that, they kinda jumped around to hardware reveals that were segued to very suddenly and then television with brian michael bendis putting the auditorium to sleep, and finally talk of a movie and a game based on that movie with no real details other than a vague release date.

It was a decent conference, I thought it was better than last year's.

Surprised at the complete lack of new first party announcements, seems that Boyes has been busier than Shu as their third/second party relations is where it's at right now.

EDIT: Also should say, Sony's presentation this year wasn't very slick at all. Very rough around the edges and seemed a little under-rehearsed.

The conference wasn't particularly displeasing, but I think it was lacking in surprise. Though admittedly I'm a bitter Vita fan, so maybe I was always going to be disappointed.

I love how Shu actually changed his name.

part of the reason may be the free beer available for roughly two hours before the conference starts.

I wonder how bad the conference must have been to overshadow the reveal of the new Demons Souls

In any case, PS4 is the first next gen system i am getting for the new From Software game, who cares how the conference was

Please...are you really going to argue that the average gamer:

- Knows what Shenmue is?
- Knows what Yakuza is?
- Would rather a FFVII remake or Crash than a new Zombie killing game?

Really? Do you REALLY think those games appeal to today's average gamer?

Do you think Grim Fandango is a system seller?...no, it has IGC written all over it..

I'm not downplaying this games...I'd KILL for a FFVII remake, or a new Crash game...Grim Fandango is a classic that deserves a remake...

But I'm not the average gamer..you're not the average gamer..nobody here is..

Personally, I think these big companies should stop trying to go after the same set of people, I miss the days when the majority of top tier titles were different and didn't feel like they were conceptualized by market research. I see a lot of "me too" games nowadays and a lot of check box features that need filling but not much risks being taken. If you asked an average gamer to play demon souls before it was released and then asked them if they thought the game would have any financial success, I would guess that the majority would not have been kind to it. Yet here we are today with people clamoring over anything that even resembles its mechanics. We don't know what appeals to gamers and neither do companies, otherwise every title released would be a financial success. Trying new things and experimentation is the formula for finding the next COD, but no one cares about that anymore. lately, the only innovation anyone seems interested in is finding ways to get money out of you for content you previously enjoyed for free.

Was a decent conference.
Didn't sell me on a PS4 right now, but still expecting to pick one up at end of 2015.

If I had to give it a mark I'd say 6/10 compared to 8/10 for MS.

Still a good conference though. Well done Sony.

Flip them for me, found sonys a tad better than ms, a lot of games on show more surprises too.

R* has ALWAYS had a close relationship with Sony...they always showed the PS3 version of GTAV during the leadup to release..

I wouldn't say always. GTAIV was very Xbox. Hell they had 50 million dollar DLC.

I do wonder what kind of PS4 sales numbers it would take for them to do something with Agent.

i just watched it now...(the live streaming was at the 3 of night here in italy) ..honestly i was expecting at least to be on par with the ms one...

to me was the most underwhelming of all the conference...a part of the uncharted 15 sec trailer...and some multiplats....
nothing too big on the exclusive part :(

I'm totally conflicted on this one: it wasn't "bad", but it had many lows (Bendis showing up and TV talk, Entwined, Shawn Layden is nowhere the awesome level Tretton was, no new ps+ games), and its highs were little and compromised (basically 0 gameplay for the most awaited titles and no real "megaton" like Sony didn't care if we knew of BloodBorne months before).
I still get the "we're on a dominant position and don't need do blow our load" but man at least give us something to talk for a while.
And while they're good, please tone down all those indies.
